Here's to us!Happy International Womens' Day!
Wishing all female QLers a very happy Womens' Day!
International Women's Day (IWD) is marked on March 8 every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. In most countries around the world, the political and human rights theme as designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.
Womens' Day celebrations around the world
In Italy, to celebrate the day, men give yellow mimosas to women. Yellow mimosas and chocolate are also one of the most common March 8 presents in Russia and Albania.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Lithuania, Moldova, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Serbia the custom of giving women flowers still prevails. Women sometimes get gifts from their employers too. Schoolchildren often bring gifts for their teachers as well.
In countries like Portugal and Romania, it is usual, at the night of 8 March, for groups of women celebrate in "women-only" dinners and parties.
In India, IWD holds a lot of significance. Many celebrations are held during the day.
In Pakistan working women in formal and informal sectors celebrate International Women's Day every year to commemorate their ongoing struggle for due rights, despite facing many cultural and religious restrictions. Some women working for change in society use IWM to help the movement for women's rights.
In Poland, for instance, every International Women's Day includes large feminist demonstrations in major cities.
Hi all

Now She is in USA prison, Having Lost Memory, Due to Physical, Psychological & sexual torture, She is Imprisoned with men. Any human/ women rights for Dr. Aafia on the womens Day??
FS, there is a difference. Mother's day and Father's day are to celebrate relations and not their gender.
Qatarisun, Yes nature has blessed me with the capacity of bearing a child and I am proud with it. Thats why we celebrate Mother's day not women's day for it.
I don't claim that women are better than men. For me, either of men and women are strong in some points and weaker in others. But we are both equal as humans.
Just a day to remind us to cherish and uphold the women in our lives. They make life so beautiful and worth living. Never mind all the days when you tear your hair in frustration or the emotional blackmail or the numerous mind games. We still love our women. Here is to all those lovely women in our lives.
drmana, I very much hope that you ARE "different than Men in this world".. at least that you do have an organ for childbirth, which makes it possible to be a MOTHER .. no one man can be ever close to a woman! Woman is much ABOVE..

History makes it evident that all those civilisations that had ever excelled had one thing in common - women participation. Females have been proving their excellence in all walks of life throughout history, the best example being kingdoms and states ruled by queens in a male-dominant culture. No society on earth has ever prospered without first empowering its women and letting them perform what they can and where they can.

drmana..then there is no need for any day..why we need mothers day fathers day...etc..
Its just a day dedicated to them (us)..whats wrong in that?
and whyteknight rightly pointed out we should have a mens day
If just giving a day to thank women is all you want than it's not fair not to have a men's day too.

we should not lose sight of all the women who are getting abused. I agree
My comments were in respect to women who also need to be appreciated for the impact they make in the world and our lives.
I believe there are various groups around the world who are actively seeking to address the abuse issues but certain societies will need a big step change before woman are treated equally.
You should, just like people do for Aids victims & Cancer victims, but having one day of year does draw a focus to the issues.

Olive, Why not hug them all year long and not just in one particular day?
"It is better to be hated for what you are than being loved for what you are not."
Come Olive I will hug you :P
"Live with passion, Die with style"
At this moment in time DrMana we are still viewed as different from men. There's no such thing as a woman with true equality, and attention does need to be drawn to that fact, giving one day of the year does help to focus that energy. Unfortunately I think the true meaning of the day gets lost behind these fluffy hug your mother, hug your sister, hug your wife crap. How about hug the woman who's husband beats her, hug the woman who's husband/father won't let her out of the house, hug the woman making less then a man for the same job, etc.

How does your celebrating it for one day help draw attention to these other women Olive ?
I agree Olive. But isn't celebrating Women's day making us different than Men. It's like saying that all other days are not for Women. We should concentrate more on making our voice heard for equality all year long not just in this single day of the year.
"It is better to be hated for what you are than being loved for what you are not."
Unfortunately Drmana there are many women in this world who aren't treated as equals. We need this day to draw attention to those issues.

Now that's a true feminist drmana.
drmana I appreciate that.

I don't need a day to be celebrated for us Women. I am no different than Men in this world. Treat me as an equal. That would be the best day for any women.
