Handing over IDs at security gates

With the new law about having the Qatari ID on me all the time, I am reluctant to hand over my ID at compound security gates. Is there any regulation which can be used to avoid having to hand over ID cards at security gates? Have other people experienced any issue with handing over ID cards?
