It really surprises me the way QL is being now ( I’ve been away for a while).. Too many not very clean jokes and remarks..so much "hate".. Personal attacks more than ever..!! WOW!! What happened!
Humor is a nice thing: only when BOTH sides find it funny. Otherwise, a serious approach towards topics is much safer.

*sigh* where is the nice friendly family site I’ve been in?

I miss the helping others attitude..

I think everyone here - regardless of culture, religion, etc., learned this lesson when they were young.

"If you can't say something nice about or to someone - don't say anything at all".

Agree to disagree, personal attacks are not necessary, belittling someone makes you look foolish, respect begets respect.

Unfortuantely there are those in the world that have to put others down to make themselves feel better. There are those who are bored and have to start conflict for their entertainment.

Inform others of your opionion don't try to force your opinion on them. You may end up changing someone's mind with the information that you offer.

Everyone in Doha has a unique opportunity. You have a chance to learn and experience other cultures, etc. I know my children, as well as myself, benefited from being expats. It has helped us grow as human beings.

Aisha, I hope you remain on this sight. I enjoy reading your posts and blogs. I am very anxious to get to Qatar because one of the first things I want to do is join your volunteer group.

All the best to all the QLers. 'Yall have a good evening.

I used to worked for a multinational IT company back home. We used to have expat colleagues before the internet bubble burst. What I vividly remember was sometimes in our meetings there would be heated exchanges that most often lead to off-topic comments and nasty remarks. We locals would at times be shocked and scandalized by their heated exchanges. But you know after the meeting is over, they go out laughing and having dinner together as if nothing happened.

We locals always think that can never happen between us because we really tend to remember the personal remarks and nasty comments. But to them it was just part of the discussion.

So I think it is the same here. We should not take everything seriously and tend to become the disciplinary police or the sheriffs of QL and shoot down everyone who we think is not at par with our disciplinary pedestal.

Just another two cents worth.... (count it 4 cents because I gave 2 yesterday...lol)

By CYman• 24 Jun 2007 20:17
CYman

I am so glad you interfered here. You are a man with the ability to put things on paper with unique technic. You are also someone who is respected by all here and hopefully your plea will be heart and adopted by all

My good friend, you mention:

"Swearing, insulting, cursing, mentioning people by their real names, calling them kids, looking for [what they think sometimes] others mistakes and creating new threads of that, or checking the thread not for the thread itself, but to follow particularly some people's comments and start attacking them ... I don't think that anyone would agree to that or find it acceptable."

This is exactly what I oppose. These phenomena have multiplied recently making a lot of people to question whether this is a place worth visiting regularly. This is the reason why Aisha felt she should put up this thread.

Did you see me ever to complaint about jokes, funny threats, or people nicely teasing each other? Never! I strongly believe in the freedom of speech and as Emil Zola said: I may disagree with what you say but I will always fight for your right to say it.

The question is where someone draws the line. I hope the collective wisdom of the vast majority of QL users will prevent those who often destroy the friendly atmosphere.

May the roof above us never fall in, and may the friends below never fall out!

i could totally relate with what you are saying. Though "funny, clean jokes, humour, etc" are all relative words the definition/meaning defends on the person using them. My 2 cents are to stay away if i dont like the thread or post comment to say so or find threads that are my kind of tea.

I did not want to participate here or on the other threads to be on no one side. I don't want to be with part of QL members or be against the rest. QL is a community, should be here a family and let's forget about Aflatoon's Holly City, it does not and would never exist ... It was so sad to see my dear friend here CYman upset and could not help it but to post something here [btw, who upsets you old man? hopefully not me :)]

How are you doing my friend and how is it going with your vacation there in Cyprus? Why you are so upset my dear friend? If this is the case while you are so far away, then what would happen when you come back here? :)

My friend you are right, some of the posts here can be so ignorance and considered as very bad comments. You can find this in most of the forums and QL is a forum, so it won't be an exception. No matter how do we try, there would be always some issues and problems that we won't be able to control sometimes and thank god that QL does not have that much like other forums. All thank to god most of the people here are well educated and aware of what is happening here, no need to go back to school or anything like that :)

You remember the problem that we got here when QP was opened? We could not control that because we could not ban those guys using their IPs because Q-Tel is like always giving everyone hard time because there is no concept of having a static IP. What happened in the end? They went away by their selfs and give up in the end, quit on posting useless comments and threads.

See I don't know how do people see it here, what some people see it unacceptable, the others have no problems with that. That does not mean that we can't both have a level to which we would both agree that it is not acceptable. Swearing, insulting, cursing, mentioning people by their real names, calling them kids, looking for [what they think sometimes] others mistakes and creating new threads of that, or checking the thread not for the thread itself, but to follow particularly some people's comments and start attacking them ... I don't think that anyone would agree to that or find it acceptable.

Sometimes the wise side of you would betray you and you would find yourself posting sometimes things that you would be really upset with it later, and that is why you can't attack others or list their problems because they misjudge the situation there.

I did not post here anything and in a lot of other threads because I don't want to be part of any of this. I can't post something and make the 10,000 members satisfied as well as I can't post something also and offend them. CYman ... I know that you are really upset my dear friend, but when I come across this thread .. it really hurts me because it was like: Everyone is required to post here to clarify their innocence of all the mentioned stuff here, who does not post should be one of those.

It hurts me more because some of the people did not intend to do that, some of them are really feeling bad about how do some people react to their posts. Some people would make sometimes a bug fuss out of nothing, simply ignoring some of the comments would work just fine. It won't work with the other posts and I'm sure of that as well. If everyone would open new threads to attack other people or list their mistakes ... then we are all doomed and this community lost its purpose and the message that we all are trying here to deliver won't exist.

So please ... in the love of god. Let's stop all of this .. I'm not going to list again everything, hopefully my message were clear and reached everyone. This is going to be my first and last post here on this thread, so please forgive me if I did not reply or say anything later ...

CYman, when will you come back man? We are missing you here so come before Mr.Paul leaves us all :)

as I expect them not to insult mine. I raised my boys to believe the same way and have respect for everyone regardless if they are different from us, in any way. That's the way the world is. Everyone has something to share and that's what makes the world such an wonderful place. There's so much to learn if you just open your mind. My favorite quote is "The mind is like a parachute, it only works when its open."

I agree with the issue of things becoming a free for all if some people are let loose...but for the most part..that's not going to happen. If you ignore those that have a small mind on here, they will stop because they aren't getting the attention they crave.

ITs not a question of putting gag orders or that sort of thing.

Its just a question of sensibilities. You tease anyone or make jokes

about anyone it does not matter but there has to be a red line somewhere. Else this will degenerate into a free for all.

DOnt insult anyones religion/beliefs. What one may hold sacred may not be

considered by others in the same manner.

feelings. I quite honestly am not trying to clean up QL because I fully believe in the freedom of speech. However..I also believe in the freedom to avoid that which offends me. I have the power to cut the power off to the computer or turn it on. Simple as that. I am in another country that has different religion than mine and in that respect, I will respect their religion and beliefs..however, I also expect them to respect mine. Goes BOTH ways.

I'm very new to this site and for the most part have enjoyed reading the posts. I don't care for the conflicts to be honest so I tend to avoid those posts. I love making jokes and teasing with everyone but never take my joking seriously for I would never offend someone intentionally. It does concern me that some people would try and put gag order others...just as it does me that some people would put down others due to their religious beliefs. again that goes both ways.

Respect goes both ways...so...let's all just be nice to each other and have a fun time.

but why can't everyone just agree to disagree on some things? Stop making religion and personal morals an issue on here. Life is what you make of it and we are all going to be different, even within our own religions. Family is family...mine is no different than yours. We all love our kids..and are trying to be kind to others. Don't impose your views and regulations on others, I don't care WHO you are. Its like discussing politics at a social event...its just NOT done. We can all learn from others(and their mistakes!) and the ones who don't, don't matter in the long run. There are some that posts things that irritate or offend me, but I choose to ignore that. Some people have a different opinion of what I think is funny..so what? If you don't like something...skip to the next topic. Its as easy as that...Let's all just get along. Life is too short to make things so personal that it upsets you and raises your blood pressure. Live life to the fullest but never at someone else's expense. Ok...now I'm off my soapbox...

After reading most of the replies, I see a uniform common thread, that is being good others.

Having fun is no problem. But having fun at the expense of others is

the problem.

If somebody want to say some silly jokes..ofcourse it OK.

People who don't like it can just ignore and go on.

They make fun of us in other threats, they dare not come here, the cowards. I noticed this earlier, when I posted against their insulting, chauvinistic, arrogant comments, NOBODY raised a voice against my challenge. They are just cowards who don't have a single argument to defend their catastrophic, selfish behavior.

I can live with them but I cannot but fight their indecent behavior always, no matter the consequences.

Don't you QLrs, question yourselves, why whenever there is a threat on discipline matters these same people are always absent, whereas at the same time they flood the forum with b****it on other threats?

Maybe the term 'family site' does not actually characterize what we have here but the term 'friendly site' should be adhered and respected by everyone.

For what it's worth... surely there has to be some common decency in the way we interact with each other.

There is a 'lowest common denominator' below which we, as humans endowed with intellect, cannot and should not fall below. Sure, have a laugh, crack a few jokes - but freedom is easily abused when it crosses over into insults and abusive behaviour.

I can see, even with the short time i've been here, how things have deteriorated in this regard. Cornellian, surely, a real community would be goverened by some morals and standards by which we could ensure that the community remains vibrant and sustainable by not falling into a sense of lawlessness, etc.

If we are a 'family', then every family is governed by rules that would include common decency, etc.

So what rules of self-governence do we have? Maybe a different thread is needed.

By treysdad• 23 Jun 2007 22:00

Just wanted to add my thoughts on this topic. I agree that there are some posts and comments that to me are offensive based on the my culture and the way we were raised as children (like talking freely and openly about sex and other topics, in our culture we always use methapors). I even PMed once to Qatari regarding a thread that went really nasty with name calling and revealing of people's names.

Then I thought hey this is the internet and these are people with different opinions, way of thinking, inhibitions, culture and sensibilities. The reason the internet was created was to have a free exchange of ideas without government or religious censorship. So what maybe offensive to me (except matters of basic human decency and morality - like that rape comment) may be just ok to other cultures. So it's up for me to accept it or just ignore it. It is sometimes in these exchanges heated or not, nasty or comical, that we broaden our knowledge of other cultures and each others sensibilities. And with the experience we all grow. As the saying goes: whatever does not kill us only makes us stronger. Well, that's just my two cents worth.

all of us here are strangers, we only met online. We people have different views in every topic posted here mainly because of customs and traditions, we agreed or not its up to us.

We can also choose which forum or topic we want to participate and put some views to it, that's freedom of choice.

As simple as this, if you don't like certain issues or comments ignore it and go to another forum. Don't make comments that would start up some heated arguments.

We are here to ease the dullness in Qatar, we need some spice so that we can go on and still enjoy our stay here.

I have been reading hundreds of threats on QL since last October. I started posting only recently. I cannot but agree with you that some people not only post for the sake of posting but use insulting language, hijack serious threats not caring about fellow QLrs who would like to have decent conversations and confrontations.

I guess there are people out there who have fun with stupidities which they call humor. There are are others that cannot express themselves without sarcasm. We simply have to live with them, but tolerance has it's limits. Twice I objected to bad language and insulting comments by two of the regular members who are present almost in every threat, and I found that a lot of people agreed with me.

Qatari cannot do much about it other than advise. It's the members who are suppose to impose a self discipline!

Look on the bright side, we are a real community, we try to help eachother and we try to answer all the questions that are asked. Let's not forget the groups that are helping lives outside QL such as the animal and volunteer groups. Some of us find QL as a stress release from our hectic lives so we come here chat and have a few laughs.

There has been some tension on QL, but it happens, and it'll pass and then come back again. That's how life is. So just take it easy everyone, and keep smiling cause ur a part of this wacky community :-)

Too bad to read this!

We can't control everything (of course!)

I understand your point.

TIME change & PEOPLE change you have to accept this.

Just continue what's in your heart...GOD sees eveything hidden.

By the way, i've changed my mobile #.

Agreed Aisha. Qatar Living is turning into a chat site.

But hey, I'm just uptight and don't want people to have fun. What can I say?

I really thought that this was how this forum is. Do you mean to say that there was a different side to the people on this forum, Aisha??

More and more people want to dominate in QL.

More hatred and making-fun-of-others being portraied rather than smart and polite conversation.

But Aisha, since now you've come back, let us hope things would change for better.

Cheers,

i think some of the issue is a misunderstanding of different senses of humour between cultures.

a lot of the stuff posted makes me really laugh - my manchester humour is very dry - and not always universally appreciated.

there is some great community stuff going on

we had a get together last night

we are helping the people kicked out of the flats

there are groups forming

i believe it is more community orientated than ever

I'm all with you in that.. I really really wish they find a forum whose admin welcomes their attitudes. It's just way out of line. It's not funny or entertaining any more.. for the majority I mean.

and it's pathetic when even those users that are bringing the site down come onto a thread like this one and demean it with their sarcasm. While I totally believe in freedom of speech; all intelligent people know that with the freedom comes responsibility. Quite obviously some of the users on this forum are very irresponsible. We should encourage them to find a new forum to go to.....

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

Sad, but true. But, as PM says, the forum is as good as its users. So, listen up guys !!! Qatari can only do so much. And he has his hands full with crazies who make a 100 posts which makes no sense and similar stuff.

When I see the present situation QL I want to dry, cry, cry and cry some more. I want to die crying about dirtying the pureity of QL.

In my short stay, I see more of bickering, arrogance and

chauvinistic attitude here.

More and more people are trying to dominate others.

Usage of language by few has hit rock bottom.

Of course, thankfully the majority members are sane.

We are not talking about them. But they can certainly help.

It doesn’t have to be like this. We have choice.

Some body said that change is constant. Correct.

But the Change has to be for better not worst.

We cannot be always correct and ideal. World was never perfect.

But the real fun is trying to be ideal. Is it not?

QL is changing the same way Qatar is changing, it is moving away from being family oriented, conservative and safe country, and there is nothing anyone can do about it....the only constant is change
