Give all elderly the right to die

PHILIP Nitschke says he no longer believes voluntary euthanasia should only be available to the terminally ill, but that elderly people afraid of getting old and incapacitated should also have a choice.

The controversial campaigner made the comment today at a public forum in Perth, where he spoke before about 100 mostly elderly people about strategies "for a peaceful death'', including his Exit Euthanasia Drug Test Kit.

More chairs had to be brought in to accommodate the capacity crowd at the Cambridge Library building in the northern Perth suburb of Floreat.

During his talk he said the best drug for voluntary euthanasia was Nembutal, used by veterinarians to put down animals.

He said the sleeping drug, which he said killed Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Jimi Hendrix, was a "peaceful'' way to die.

Dr Nitschke said the drug was readily available in Mexico.

I'm going back to Mexico then!!!!!!

I think there should be some kind of committee that judges individuals on a case by case basis.

My biggest fear is not being able to do anything for myself and being a burdeon to other people but still being mentally aware of what is going on around me. If I was ever in an accident that left me physically unable to move but mentally sound I would want assisted suicide. Same as if I was diagnosed with a terminal condition eg. Alzeimers.

Maybe it could be like an organ donor card - if i have an accident and am left in a vegetative state, I want it on record somewhere that I want to be euthanised.

Some people won't agree with it and they don't have to do it. But I think the option should be there for others.

And apparently I'm going to hell anyway for making the decision to have animals euthanised!

Many people will be killed using the loops of the law if implemented. No doubt about it.

I agree with Gypsy. And agree with the solution that PM gave.

"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.

I agree with Euthnaisa if you're terminally ill and in a lot of pain. But the right to off yourself because you don't want to get a few wrinkles??? No, I don't think so.

Yeah...lets kill old people who long for their death. And hey, why stop there....lets kill everyone who long for their deaths. Lets fight for the right to suicide!

"Wa Shaloom Aleikum"

Was, of course, purely a provocation from my side because of the ridiculous everlasting dispute.

God knows all languages. I will never forget a father's story of the day his 5-year old profoundly deaf daughter realized that God "heard" her prayers. She hadn't known that before. 'Daddy!" she said (signed), "God knows sign language! He can hear me!"

Euthanasia is not right if the drugs are to be administered by another person/Doctor. Because a Doctor has no right to end someones life.

QS, The God(if present) may be multi lingual.

He definitely knows Hebrew and Arabic.

Hebrew because he carved out the tablets of the 10 commandments.

And Arabic because Qu'ran is the word of God.

would want to hasten their death may not be working with full mental competence and in that case some Muslims feel they will not be banished to Hell. Who knows?

But now I tend to think that we should be working on making it easier for families to take care of their terminally ill relatives and offer all the pain relief they need (making it affordable to them).

I just think we can do a better job with our elderly and terminally ill.

Bleu...I agree with your comment partialy. I believe we are born with two dates, the date of our birth and the date of our death, both decided by God, But whats to say HIS will IS that I have control over the time of my death?

A) Go to Hell. The choice of the time you die is in God's hands, not something you decide.

A good idea.. The option should be there for all.. Some don't want to be a burden on society and others are not happy with their lot..

So, lets say a dead person arrives in front of God.

Dead:

"Hi"

God:

"Wa Shaloom Aleikum"

"Ow, you killed yourself. Why?"

Dead:

"I desired to be with you as I no longer wish to suffer"

Now, what would the merciful Father say?

A) "Go to hell"

B) "I understand, welcome child"

People should be able to accommodate their own deaths, they are responsible for their own actions.

In case religious people have objections against this, please ask them to shut up and let God judge.

One of the ethical problems faced is when money (of course) is involved and people who stand to inherit top off their elders. Surely there are legal ways around all the ethical/moral views, i.e. living wills etc

i think it would be very wise to allow elderly people to decide when they want to leave this world and to move to the better one...

world belongs to the young...

I agree. But stupid politicians will never allow such a thing...and if they do, well it will be a surprise.
