DOHA: A private school here denied entry to a girl student to the classroom on the first day of the new academic year for wearing the headscarf (hijab), a local Arabic daily reported yesterday.

The Supreme Education Council (SEC) immediately intervened and forced the school to revoke its decision. The school has also been asked to make an official apology to the father of the student, the daily said. The father was surprised by the school’s move because his daughter had been attending the same school over the past three years wearing hijab, said the daily.

After the incident, he spoke to the school administration but failed to convince them. He said the school couldn’t give him any satisfactory explanation for the sudden change in the rules.

SEC came to know about the incident after a friend of the father posted a complaint through Twitter. The authorities took the issue seriously and forced the school to allow the student to attend the classes in the following days, said the daily. The Peninsula

the truth is there are just going to be some stupid people everywhere in the world who are so extreme and closed-minded and want to give wrong impression of Islam, and try to publish lies and spread fire just to do witch-hunts.

"You are new here and will learn that wasting your breath isn't worth it.AGREE!!!

"As long as you have a western passport, you are the evil and nothing you can say will ever change that" DISAGREE !!

But my husband (muslim) has lived here all his life, and knows the truth, this is bull-shxxt, no one would make a child NOT wear hijab in Qatar, someone is just trying to make fire where there isn't....

nice, i will refrain from even commenting anymore, it has nothing to do with being new here and what passport I have.

We were not there, we didnt hear what this was about. Of course in a Muslim country no one will say you can not wear a hijab. I am sure it is a mis-understanding, and should be handled between teacher, parent, and school officials, not the media.

btw--I think it is ridiculous a girl should be banned from wearing a headscarf in this or in any other country. But I think the answer is clear laws and proper education of teachers and administrators, not hefty punishments.

In terms of teachers--I think schools specifically created schools for expat children (called "community schools" by the SEC) should be able to require teachers to dress appropriately for the community of expats they serve, even if it means no abaya in the classroom). FYI Compass is private school, not a community school.

"Open up your mind people, we muslims simply want to be different, we have different values, and we take our faith more seriously than others"

That statement is offensive to people of other religious faiths. Imagine if a Jew made such claims of taking "our faith more seriously than others" to you. Would you not be offended?

My suggestion is that you "open your mind up" and be sensitive to others.

And in terms of wanting to be different, is the whole point you are making about conformity and wanting non-Muslims to abide by your religious and cultural practices? I would agree with the point if you were talking about Spain or the US, but Qatar is a nation in the Muslims are the majority. The people being different here are the non-Muslims.

Believe it or not, this is a worrying trend. The other day, my wife, a non arab muslim wanted to help someone to get a teaching job at a school here in Doha was rudely told that the school does not accept teachers who is wearing all black abaya. If the applicant was wearing a niqab, "do not bother". I cannot believe such things happen here, we left Europe & South East Asia due to discrimination that we face, only to be faced with such rubbish. Open up your mind people, we muslims simply want to be different, we have different values, and we take our faith more seriously than others but we are all normal family oriented, peace loving human underneath. "It is not just Arabs, it seems some paki's here don't want to be civilized."

ROFL - What does that mean ?

I thought being Muslim was to practice Islam, and show it is peaceful religion, not go around calling for flagging, etc.

First the mind should be clean to practice islam. calling paki / arab uncivilized...how can you actually practice

Do not forget our beloved prophet is from arabia

Yes like brit comment i too say "ROFL"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It means, some ppl here are being un-civilized & closed minded, and giving the non-Muslim a bad image of what it means to be Muslim. In Islam ---I thought being Muslim was to practice Islam, and show it is peaceful religion, not go around calling for flagging, etc. My husband''s family is Muslim, they do not think like some ppl here, jumping to conclusions!

I am non -Muslim, but atleast I behave in a civilized manner and not go off ranting about wanting to judge someone and resort to violence like you and segmond seem to want to do!!! So rofl all you want. It just proves my point that your not a true Muslim, but in name only . Peace out!!!

I have no problems with Pakistanis, (paki's) no harm intended.......just abrv. or any other person here that is or isn't Muslim, just have problems with 2 ppl here that are not understanding what being civilized means, and how you have created an image of what Islam isn't !!!

Now can we just leave it between the father, and the school???

To nip the evil in bud is crucial as a stitch in time saves nine. That no mercy should be meted out to this rascally blackguard of a teacher for his senseless infraction of our values. That he found it so easy to brazenly compromise the modesty of a female clearly underscores the importance of a strict law in place to prevent such incidents from ever happening again. In all likelihood, he was trying to test the limits of the people of this country. Unless, he was a complete retard and a psychopath, he would, in all sanity never have tried to do this for fun. It is important that now he be taken to task with the same seriousness with he committed this crime.

It is so clear that many among us, most likely out of their voyer urges, are not only keeping silent over the matter, but are even not shying away from publicly protecting the transgressor. It is these voyers who are responsible for making a showpiece of the womankind, depriving womanhood of her richest ornament: modesty. There were many people even among the Christians and the Jews who tried to oppose these voyers from materializing their dream of making every woman come out in the nude. However, they were still successful in the west.

Now, they have made their evil designs to engulf the orient as well. But so long as sensible people live, these monstrous rascals will never succeed in snatching off the dress of modesty from a woman.

If someone asks my daughter, my wife, my sister to not enter the class just because she is wearing her scarf, I would rather crack the voyer's head like an egg than become a supporter for him. The daughter of another muslim is no less sacred to me.

The number of morons on QL never ceases to amaze me.

IF THE STORY IS TRUE--the response of some here is to fire every person at the school, close it down, flog the teacher and administrator, deport them, lay an obscene fine on the school, etc. Sounds an awful lot like the unconsidered stupidity transpiring in Egypt and Libya.

How about this: find out if it is true and the WHOLE circumstances. See that it is corrected by politely educating the school officials that the student was acting within her rights, and then move on. Such restraint is mark of confidence and civility. Punishing these people so severely would only bring shame to Qatar and its predominate religion. After all true power is the ability to deal out severe retribution but then acting with restraint. But then there is always the savage option of forming a mob, attacking the school and hurting some innocent people.

That any school/school teacher in this country is gonna randomly decide to ask a student not to wear the hijab, Knowing the backlash it's likely to cause. Come on people, do you really believe this is actually what happened?

As for the teacher asking the girl "why do you wear hijab" So what?? What's the big deal?

My daughter attended a independent school herself and would sometimes ask to be excused from certain activities due to religious reasons. Often teachers, both Arabs and non Arabs,Muslims and non Muslims, would ask her "why don't you do such and such" And AlHamdulillah never once did she hesitate to explain to them exactly why, with authentic proof(and no she didn't say "cos my parents say no"). That is because I have brought her up to practice Islam with knowledge. And I am happy that she can then convey her knowledge to others than appears to be a brainwashed kid!

Finally I have long since given up blindly believing any story that is conveyed by the media, any media! Better to first check the facts and study the evidences and logical reasoning. And in this case, as Fubar rightly said, we can only even consider the version carried by the Peninsular to be true should the father of child come out in public and relate exactly what happened and quote what the teacher said.

“Her teacher asked, ‘Why are you wearing the hijab?’ We weren’t certain whether it was appropriate for young girls,” Brackstone-Drake said.

The next day, the school was approached by the SEC, bringing to light that the matter had been misconstrued.

That prompted the principal to send an email to staff on all three campuses, affirming that students were allowed to wear hijab as long as they were in the school uniform colors - yellow or white for primary school, and black or blue for secondary school.

So, the staff weren't aware of this rule ?

What kind of education are they imparting anyways?

When do we get the whole story?

A lot of unnamed sources, stories being spread through Twitter, no name of the school, the teacher, the family, the SEC officials.

Sounds like a load of crap to me. I refuse to believe that any school in this country would be that dumb.

Better to post the full story so we can understand why the school took that decision.

How strange. Why did they make that policy? Good thing it was revoked.
