Girl wearing hijab denied entry to class

DOHA: A private school here denied entry to a girl student to the classroom on the first day of the new academic year for wearing the headscarf (hijab), a local Arabic daily reported yesterday.
The Supreme Education Council (SEC) immediately intervened and forced the school to revoke its decision. The school has also been asked to make an official apology to the father of the student, the daily said. The father was surprised by the school’s move because his daughter had been attending the same school over the past three years wearing hijab, said the daily.
After the incident, he spoke to the school administration but failed to convince them. He said the school couldn’t give him any satisfactory explanation for the sudden change in the rules.
SEC came to know about the incident after a friend of the father posted a complaint through Twitter. The authorities took the issue seriously and forced the school to allow the student to attend the classes in the following days, said the daily. The Peninsula

the truth is there are just going to be some stupid people everywhere in the world who are so extreme and closed-minded and want to give wrong impression of Islam, and try to publish lies and spread fire just to do witch-hunts.
"You are new here and will learn that wasting your breath isn't worth it.AGREE!!!
"As long as you have a western passport, you are the evil and nothing you can say will ever change that" DISAGREE !!
But my husband (muslim) has lived here all his life, and knows the truth, this is bull-shxxt, no one would make a child NOT wear hijab in Qatar, someone is just trying to make fire where there isn't....
nice, i will refrain from even commenting anymore, it has nothing to do with being new here and what passport I have.
We were not there, we didnt hear what this was about. Of course in a Muslim country no one will say you can not wear a hijab. I am sure it is a mis-understanding, and should be handled between teacher, parent, and school officials, not the media.
Salam
Sad
btw--I think it is ridiculous a girl should be banned from wearing a headscarf in this or in any other country. But I think the answer is clear laws and proper education of teachers and administrators, not hefty punishments.
In terms of teachers--I think schools specifically created schools for expat children (called "community schools" by the SEC) should be able to require teachers to dress appropriately for the community of expats they serve, even if it means no abaya in the classroom). FYI Compass is private school, not a community school.
"Open up your mind people, we muslims simply want to be different, we have different values, and we take our faith more seriously than others"
That statement is offensive to people of other religious faiths. Imagine if a Jew made such claims of taking "our faith more seriously than others" to you. Would you not be offended?
My suggestion is that you "open your mind up" and be sensitive to others.
And in terms of wanting to be different, is the whole point you are making about conformity and wanting non-Muslims to abide by your religious and cultural practices? I would agree with the point if you were talking about Spain or the US, but Qatar is a nation in the Muslims are the majority. The people being different here are the non-Muslims.
why not name and shame the school which does it.
Wise men never argue with fools, because people from a distance can't tell who is who?
Believe it or not, this is a worrying trend. The other day, my wife, a non arab muslim wanted to help someone to get a teaching job at a school here in Doha was rudely told that the school does not accept teachers who is wearing all black abaya. If the applicant was wearing a niqab, "do not bother". I cannot believe such things happen here, we left Europe & South East Asia due to discrimination that we face, only to be faced with such rubbish. Open up your mind people, we muslims simply want to be different, we have different values, and we take our faith more seriously than others but we are all normal family oriented, peace loving human underneath. Charles
Damn. I wish I had someone to cook me a hot dinner after a hard day at work :O(
Enjoy mimi. I'm off to dinner myself.
I agree !!! guess it is better to just stop wasting my civilized thoughts & prayers for peace on such people, and go make a great dinner for my hubby to enjoy when he gets home from long day at work.
Salam
Yep, otherwise these idiots will run in and try to run something up their flagpoles together. I can just picture all the confused looks now: "wait guys, I think we're doing it wrong . . . "
The school better beef up their security.
benson2012 said Mimi ...
I would like to ask the same to you
"It is not just Arabs, it seems some paki's here don't want to be civilized."
ROFL - What does that mean ?
I thought being Muslim was to practice Islam, and show it is peaceful religion, not go around calling for flagging, etc.
First the mind should be clean to practice islam. calling paki / arab uncivilized...how can you actually practice
Do not forget our beloved prophet is from arabia
Yes like brit comment i too say "ROFL"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It means, some ppl here are being un-civilized & closed minded, and giving the non-Muslim a bad image of what it means to be Muslim. In Islam ---I thought being Muslim was to practice Islam, and show it is peaceful religion, not go around calling for flagging, etc. My husband''s family is Muslim, they do not think like some ppl here, jumping to conclusions!
I am non -Muslim, but atleast I behave in a civilized manner and not go off ranting about wanting to judge someone and resort to violence like you and segmond seem to want to do!!! So rofl all you want. It just proves my point that your not a true Muslim, but in name only . Peace out!!!
I have no problems with Pakistanis, (paki's) no harm intended.......just abrv. or any other person here that is or isn't Muslim, just have problems with 2 ppl here that are not understanding what being civilized means, and how you have created an image of what Islam isn't !!!
Now can we just leave it between the father, and the school???

In the bee world (much like Benson's) males are merely servants of the females, much smaller, and generally useless. So the queen is essential for successful bee-keeping.
Ones that can spell.
What sort of bees do you keep?
Are you that dumb benson, or are you just teasing?
I also really am a bee-keeper. It's big business locally.
Ok Bachus, then I'll tandem with Brit. But we are hoping a bigger cut since we're both european!
Only for another assistant to do my job for me. I've been given more responsibility because my nationality on my passport, so I need more people to do my job.
Wait your turn.. I have already sent my CV / resume :O)
Bachus, any vacancies in your company?
Um, I am from Pakistan too. And I do believe 'Paki' is a derogatory term. Why does everyone need stereotypes and labels. Tolerance, people.
Thanks Adey.
Fortunately I am a grossly overpaid white expat who is completely unqualified to do his job. This means they hired an Asian assistant (who they pay an absolute pittance) to do all the work for me, while I make the big bucks. So I have all day.
Not to blame on twitter but thanks to this application, more morons can be heard all around the world within miliseconds... scary huh?
the close-minded and the just plain and simple hard of understanding crowd finally beat me; that's why I've pretty much given up on this sight.
LP, Bachus and fubar - I salute you for keeping up with it, but I have better things to do with my time; I refuse to stoop to the level of those I mentioned above.
And Segmund - you need some serious help my friend if that is the way you see the world.
Brilliant arguments Benson. I am totally persuaded. ROFL.
Have a good day mimi.
There goes the thread!!!! Some ppl just will never be open-minded and civilized. No more wasting my breath on such ppl here. Glad in real life, it is only between the father, the school, and the teacher, and that they have most likely moved on with their day in peace knowing it was not anything to be taken out of context.
Salam
Well put mimi.
"It is not just Arabs, it seems some paki's here don't want to be civilized."
ROFL - What does that mean ?
My point exactly !
This is why I stated it does not matter if I am new here or what passport I hold, what matters is, some ppl are wanting a riot without even hearing or seeing the whole truth.
I agree with fubar Where are the people calling for peace and understanding? It is not just Arabs, it seems some paki's here don't want to be civilized. I thought being Muslim was to practice Islam, and show it is peaceful religion, not go around calling for flagging, etc.
Stop judging people. This is out of control for nothing. Peace out. It is Seems if it was a real big deal, it would be on TV news, and not being discussed on twitter, and here just to form a witch hunt. !!!'
And there goes the the thread. Just seeing that he posted made me tired. Oh well, I guess every village needs an idiot.
To nip the evil in bud is crucial as a stitch in time saves nine. That no mercy should be meted out to this rascally blackguard of a teacher for his senseless infraction of our values. That he found it so easy to brazenly compromise the modesty of a female clearly underscores the importance of a strict law in place to prevent such incidents from ever happening again. In all likelihood, he was trying to test the limits of the people of this country. Unless, he was a complete retard and a psychopath, he would, in all sanity never have tried to do this for fun. It is important that now he be taken to task with the same seriousness with he committed this crime.
It is so clear that many among us, most likely out of their voyer urges, are not only keeping silent over the matter, but are even not shying away from publicly protecting the transgressor. It is these voyers who are responsible for making a showpiece of the womankind, depriving womanhood of her richest ornament: modesty. There were many people even among the Christians and the Jews who tried to oppose these voyers from materializing their dream of making every woman come out in the nude. However, they were still successful in the west.
Now, they have made their evil designs to engulf the orient as well. But so long as sensible people live, these monstrous rascals will never succeed in snatching off the dress of modesty from a woman.
If someone asks my daughter, my wife, my sister to not enter the class just because she is wearing her scarf, I would rather crack the voyer's head like an egg than become a supporter for him. The daughter of another muslim is no less sacred to me.
I don't believe in labels though. Too stereotypical.
They aren't the only people whose default setting is "VIOLENT"
You are falling into the same trap :O)
Ibn Khaldoun described Nomads as rough, savage and uncultured, but also said that they are hardy and uncorrupt in morals.
Well said, Bachus and Fathima.
Yes fubar. And also disappointed. But then it merely underlines that the Arab world's prosperity is stifled by violence and mistrust.
Bachus, according to the lauded philosopher and sociologist Ibn Khaldoun, the Arab is "savage by nature".
(Source: Muqadimma. This is for benson)
Bachus, are you as frightened as me at how some people think that the first and only response to every problem is a call to violence?
Where are the people calling for peace and understanding?
Fatimah, ever considered starting a school and teaching people to be civilized, and not willing to form angry, hate-filled mobs to lynch everyone?
The number of morons on QL never ceases to amaze me.
IF THE STORY IS TRUE--the response of some here is to fire every person at the school, close it down, flog the teacher and administrator, deport them, lay an obscene fine on the school, etc. Sounds an awful lot like the unconsidered stupidity transpiring in Egypt and Libya.
How about this: find out if it is true and the WHOLE circumstances. See that it is corrected by politely educating the school officials that the student was acting within her rights, and then move on. Such restraint is mark of confidence and civility. Punishing these people so severely would only bring shame to Qatar and its predominate religion. After all true power is the ability to deal out severe retribution but then acting with restraint. But then there is always the savage option of forming a mob, attacking the school and hurting some innocent people.
The Principal is ignorant for sending out a directive to all campuses affirming that students can wear hijab?
Or the Principal is ignorant for meeting with the child's father and agreeing to let her wear hijab?
Or the Principal is ignorant for going on the record as saying "Our host country is a Muslim country... would not disrespect the hijab."
I'm confused.
read it and you will know the Principal is ignorant.
Read the full story. First then give your comments. It makes no sense posting ang giving comments if you don't know the truth...
The only view that are really relevant are the father's, the teacher's and the principal's.
Making judgments about the situation without having all the facts to hand makes you look as stupid as you accuse the teacher of being.
Some people will always remain in the dark ages in spite of being educated
Why do you not just get it. Being in an Islamic country, this much no how is with every person. I saw the other day a British girl, quite young, covering her shoulders with a shawl, obviously in an attempt to conform to the cultural norms.
This teacher must be taught a lesson. At least, cane him a few times.
was the principal dumb?
wow, what a spin? so innocent...
“Her teacher asked, ‘Why are you wearing the hijab?’ We weren’t certain whether it was appropriate for young girls,” Brackstone-Drake said. in the way the ques
People in general are idiots, fubar. So, no surprise.
That any school/school teacher in this country is gonna randomly decide to ask a student not to wear the hijab, Knowing the backlash it's likely to cause. Come on people, do you really believe this is actually what happened?
As for the teacher asking the girl "why do you wear hijab" So what?? What's the big deal?
My daughter attended a independent school herself and would sometimes ask to be excused from certain activities due to religious reasons. Often teachers, both Arabs and non Arabs,Muslims and non Muslims, would ask her "why don't you do such and such" And AlHamdulillah never once did she hesitate to explain to them exactly why, with authentic proof(and no she didn't say "cos my parents say no"). That is because I have brought her up to practice Islam with knowledge. And I am happy that she can then convey her knowledge to others than appears to be a brainwashed kid!
Finally I have long since given up blindly believing any story that is conveyed by the media, any media! Better to first check the facts and study the evidences and logical reasoning. And in this case, as Fubar rightly said, we can only even consider the version carried by the Peninsular to be true should the father of child come out in public and relate exactly what happened and quote what the teacher said.
Say what you will about the papers and blogs. That's one argument.
But what scares me more is how people believe immediately everything that gets spread around on twitter and BBM.
Look at what happened in India when some people started spreading fake images through SMS, BBM, Twitter etc, and within days there were thousands fleeing for their lives under the impression that they were going to be murdered by gangs of anti-Islamic protesters.
I give up trying to talk to people who think they are the only voice in this world that are right.
You are new here and will learn that wasting your breath isn't worth it. As long as you have a western passport, you are the evil and nothing you can say will ever change that, even when you are actually talking sense. People on here don't like sense... they like blood, guts and gore... and absolutely love to be hypocrits.
Who is offended ?
if you knew anything about my 5years in newspapers here, you'd know you are talking pure rubbish... go back and track all my posts about this particular newspaper... you'd know then exactly what I thought of that one too!!!
Oh and I haven't worked for them for more than a year.... finally managed to escape!
I agree that people here change their tunes so quickly when it suits them.
Segmund!!!! you dont act inteligent!! You do not know the Facts!!! You do not hang someone on hearsay in these days!!! Were you there to see or hear what happened?
This is excatly what I am talking about, Judging someone based on Hear-say from the Media. No trail, just want to hang someone without even knowing the truth!!!
Nice Segmund! What would we do for you if you said or did something and it was mis-quoted? Hang YOU? no, we know your human, and make mistakes, we would go directly to you and talk to you about it and then do correct steps, to make sure you correct yourself so it doesnt happen again. do we judge right away when someone makes 1 mistake? everyone would be dead if we made 1 mistake in life if we did it your way.
Anyway, i do wish peace to everyone, let's be human, and get along. Whatever happened, the facts are between the school, the father, and the teacher. They will correct it.
about how bad the press is in Doha, but the minute someone comes in and actually starts reporting decently, people are offended... because they don't want to see the truth... they'd rather live in their fantasy red-rimmed world....
Hypocrits!
This is the whole point. It is a blog portraying itself as a news paper..I could take a peace of news from somewhere , post it there and ask for comments :O)
Anyway, let's agree to disagree about Doha News. Let's focus on the story instead ..
I worked in one the the Qatar daily's for 5 years, remember....
Doha News are way more informative than I have ever found any of the others too be.
BTW, if anyone has actually noticed, they are a blog, not an actual paper or news agent.
It also amazes me how people can change their tunes so quickly when it suits them. They would rather believe the wishy washy Peninsula story, without names, than Doha' news fully comprehensive name dropping story...
It just goes to prove, people only see what they want to see and anything else is just garbage...
I personaly find Doha News is no better than any of the other papers. I don't like it because it usually carries second hand news and not too well at that.
This is my own personal opinion. You may feel differently.
Told you they got ulterior ambitions.
How when Doha News was the only news source breaking the Villagio incident, every one praised them...
Now they only talk twaddle.... I do wish people could make their minds up and take a stand, instead of being so fickle and hunting with a pack of wolves out to make trouble.
Or who ever that teacher was.
The school "allows" the wearing of hijab - as shown on their website.
If the story is true as told , then the teacher had no right to question the girl.
What this really highlights is the lack of quality and reporting of the newspapers here :O(
I am sure Brackstone-Drake is packing her bags, who is she to Question a student about wearing the hijab.
COMPASS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ASPER DOHA NEWS WEBSITE.....THIS IS NOT GOOD ...TEACHING SCHOOL CURRICULAM ,,DON'T INVOLVE CHILDRENS PERSONNEL BELIEVINGS
This is even more confusing , since it only gives one side of the story and withn conflicting views to boot..
“Her teacher asked, ‘Why are you wearing the hijab?’ We weren’t certain whether it was appropriate for young girls,” Brackstone-Drake said.
The next day, the school was approached by the SEC, bringing to light that the matter had been misconstrued.
That prompted the principal to send an email to staff on all three campuses, affirming that students were allowed to wear hijab as long as they were in the school uniform colors - yellow or white for primary school, and black or blue for secondary school.
So, the staff weren't aware of this rule ?
A story goes like this
One news reporter asked Pope – Do you know, there are many brothels in Rome?
Pope asked – Where are brothels?
Next day news came - Pope asked – where are brothels?
Some QL members post half news, just to provoke people in the name of the religion.
Must be banned.
I interviewed the principal and another employee (who wears hijab) at the school this morning. Here's what happened:
http://dohanews.co/post/31390200560/school-report-about-hijab-wearing-student-barred-from
I was turned into a Newt last week.. Luckily I got better :O(
Segmund, :)
I have a long experience with Doha News, tried a lot on them to post stories about some companies, but they never helped!
Apparently it did happen here in our beloved Qatar.
Happened in Qatar in western School :)
ta tor tor zay yay wo waha!
Translation: I can not agree more.
This DohaNews is run by people with dubious character. I have noticed they harbor some hidden agenda, ulterior motives and malicious intentions.
did it happen in Qatar or some western country?
It would be unbelievable for someone to know that a conservative country like Qatar has a school which banned a student for wearing a scarf. It is a shame for all of us and I do not know how we are going to blame France for implementing their own blame.
As soon as I see the father publicly speak about how his daughter was excluded because of her hijab, I will happily believe the twitter-based story.
Until then I'd sooner believe it's just crap.
It's just outrageous how some people are being discriminated!
Let's also shut all malls down who have "Family Day", or better "No Bachelor Day"!
Who know Doha News are supporting the school? Can you believe Doha News? No one officially recognize them, they rely upon tweets, pictures and then post a story!
Changing the index page of website won't take more than 15 mins of yours!
But again in the end nothing will happen, if the school belong to some influential rich Qatari!
No, better just to keep spreading untrue rumors!
Hopefully we can provoke a mass panic, and an angry mob of townsfolk with pitchforks and burning stakes and ransack the school. Now that would be fun.
Don't shut the school down, Fine around 500K Riyals, and send the teacher immediately back to his/her country, i think this will be sufficient!
My son attend CIS. I have seen both teachers and pupils wearing hijabs. Shutting down the school is an extreme reaction.
So it's a private school that only had 1 girl in the whole school who covered her hair?
Update - Doha News has the correct version of the story.
Bachus, Then better kick out the Teacher from the country! What you say? :)
maybe a mis-understanding only.....
Yes, Segmund, let's shut down the entire school because of the poor judgement of one teacher. ALL the children should suffer for a mistake that was corrected. Get some perspective.
What the Hell
I wonder why the school is still in business. It should be shut down immediately.
What kind of education are they imparting anyways?
When do we get the whole story?
A lot of unnamed sources, stories being spread through Twitter, no name of the school, the teacher, the family, the SEC officials.
Sounds like a load of crap to me. I refuse to believe that any school in this country would be that dumb.
Better to post the full story so we can understand why the school took that decision.
How strange. Why did they make that policy? Good thing it was revoked.
Good Intervention.
My salutes to SEC first, and i really disappointed with that school, but the authorities done their duty, Cheers!!!
Name of the school?
Very happy to know that SEC has intervened and revoked the decision of school.
