Were Vodafone folks serious about those unbelievable prices of Iphone?

By Akronica• 3 Sep 2009 10:32
Akronica

Thats correct, I have iPhone 2G unlocked and running firmware 3.01 and never had a problem with iTunes or upgrades. I wont pay double the price for an Unlocked version. I just came back from Canada, got two iPhones 3GS 16 GB for 2800 QAR each, there is no way to justify paying 4500 for the same phone.

Vodafone employees can say what they want but at the end its the customer who pays

@Slip,

You could always use the iTunes and the App Store even if your phone is hacked and jailbroken. You could always disable Auto updates for your firmware.

If the reasoning is always about updating, then look at the history of the iPhone. All the 3G hacked phones are now upgraded to version 3.0.1. While waiting for a new hack if they upgrade, you could always still use your iPhone as it is, to call, etc. I do agree though that is is still better to get an unlocked phone.

However, not for the price that Vodafone is offering.

@web Admin - You are right! As I've said on their Facebook page, this confirms that Vodafone Qatar is not yet the Official carrier of iPhone and these were probably bought thru a 3rd party vendor and resold to customers for a big profit.

I guess what they were thinking was that since it is unlocked and it doesn't assure them that iPhone users are not going to stick with Vodafone, better try and charge a years' worth of Flexi plan from the customers on top of the actual cost of the iPhone. Otherwise, can anybody from Vodafone explain why such a hefty mark up was added...

I got my iPhone 3G 16 GB through a friend in Australia. Including the cost of unlocking the device, the total cost came to around the equivalent of QR2200. This was way back in January before the iPhone 3GS was released. I imagine the prices must have gone down now (at least in Australia). Therefore QR2600 for an iPhone 3G 8 GB does seem really costly.

@web_admin: I wonder if your friends with the hacked iPhones use iTunes or the App store. Theoretically, if your iPhone is hacked, with every new software update, there is a chance that Apple could cripple your iPhone. That is why it is safer to get iPhone unlocked through official channels.

How come India gets Vodafone ZooZoos and we get over-priced iPhones? I want the ZooZoo Ad Campaign in Qatar too :P

I'm really disappointed from Vodafone in Qatar I thought the prices for the Iphone will be way cheaper, I ordered one from Belgium Iphone 3Gs 32 GB unlock for 3000 QR only

They can keep their Iphone with them.

By Akronica• 2 Sep 2009 13:17

Well that shows that Vodafone wont really make it here in Qatar. With that pricing and also sub par customer service, I dont think they will gain much ground against Qtel.

I called Vodafone yesterday to ask about the iPhone price and the lady said we don't know, you should visit the retail store. I told her that's exactly why I am calling to save myself a trip to the retail store.

I dont think I have ever seen such prices for the iPhone.

I just found these in the Classified section :-

APPLE iPHONE 3GS 16GB BRAND NEW OFFICIALLY UNLOCKED - 3,800 QR

APPLE IPHONE 32GB 3GS 3G S OFFICIALLY UNLOCKED BY APPLE - 4,250 QR

these are LEGALLY UNLOCKED WITH 12MONTHS WARRANTY

(the IMEI number is registered as being unlocked in the apple database), this means you can upgrade your firmware in the future!

its still cheaper a way lot cheaper

and ya now the price of iphone 3g 8gb is just 2000

iPhone 3G 8GB QR2,600

iPhone 3GS 16GB QR4,500

i think Vodafone should pull off their iPhone campaign, till they get a price revision. Only an idiot would opt for some prices like those.

The prices that people are angry about were given on your official Vodafone Facebook page.

The people in the Vodafone shops also think those are the prices - I asked last night. I don't think you can say "final prices for the 3GS have not been officially communicated". You might be putting out a press release later, but the prices are already out there, and they're clearly the prices you expected.

If you're cutting the cost, that's one thing, but you can't pretend you weren't asking sky-high prices for the iPhone. A lot of people were really excited about this, and you're spoiling that by being greedy.

I'm not too sure what actual value does Vodafone add to the iPhone itself.

1. Reputable Source? Is it worth the 2000QR+ to get it from Vodafone Qatar or from Apple in Hong Kong, Australia or ebay?

2. Not jailbroken or hacked. Well, as long as it works, i'm ok with it, either hacked and jailbroken. I haven't seen people with hacked iPhone complaining about theirs...

3. Look at the 2 above. No contracts needed.

4. Warranty. I give that to Vodafone Qatar. But for 2000QR for a year warranty?Hmmm...

5. 1st customer from the region to get it from a service provider? Yeah.. so what? There are thousands of other people in Qatar who already have an iPhone. I still wouldn't be the 1st one to have it.

6. Free? Thanks for the limited "Freedom". I'm sure all the stuff you are giving away for free is part of a marketing ploy to drive customers to buy your sim cards. But what happens after the month of September or December when these promotions expire?

I'm not so sure that the iPhone you are selling are from from a direct contract with Apple or you're going through a 3rd party vendor. Are you? Cause they shouldn't be this expensive even if you have no contract and they're unlocked?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your feedback.

Actually, final prices for the 3GS have not been officially communicated. Final prices will shortly be announced in the press.

We want to assure all our customers that getting an iPhone from Vodafone Qatar means:

1. You are getting the phone from a reputable source

2. The phone is brand new & factory unlocked not software hacked or "jailbroken"

3. You are not being tied down to a contract

4. We are offering a 1 year warranty on the phone

5. You will be 1 of the first customers in the region to get the iPhone 3GS from a service provider

6. You can enjoy your iPhone with free mobile internet, international calling at local call rates, and SMS & MMS free weekends

Thanks!

For the same price I can get 2 i phones from Dubai with full accessories unlocked...

It was obvious from the start that this entire Vodafone thing is some money-gathering monkey business.

I already have seen some shops here in Qatar selling it for 4,200 unlocked, shouldn't life be better with Vodafone??

Vodafone cannot manipulate that people are anticipating the iphone and place this huge markup.

Personally, 5200 QR is a filthy expensive price for an iphone.

@pinoy_ako:

hey, no hidden policies. Vodafone is saying what they do and do what they say :-)

It's free 300MB Mobile Internet for the month of September! Simple like that and no strings attached!

In case you would consume all of the 300MB earlier in this month you will receive an SMS and inform you that all your free traffic is used up.

So no worries about hidden costs or follow up prices...enjoy surfing!

You can check out the full news and also the update on iPhone in the Vodafone group on Facebook:

Right, been there, checked that - City Centre today.

QR5200 for the 3GS! You can get imports for less than 2000 and Vodafone are trying to charge QR5200 for the 3GS!

You guys are nuts! I thought the idea of competition was to bring prices to a normal level in Qatar!
