Gary Glitter doesn't want to go home!

Former pop star Gary Glitter has refused to board a flight to the UK, saying he was having a heart attack.

He was earlier deported from Vietnam after spending almost three years in jail for sexually abusing two girls.

Glitter, 64, real name Paul Francis Gadd, had arrived at Bangkok in Thailand, where he was to change planes and fly back to the UK.

But he refused to leave the airport, demanding to be allowed to stay in Thailand or another Asian country.

Thai immigration has declared Glitter "persona non grata" and threatened to return him to Vietnam.

He had been met at Bangkok airport by immigration officials to ensure he caught his connecting flight.

But the BBC's Jonathan Head said the British policeman accompanying Glitter had been unable to persuade him to board the plane to the UK.

Our correspondent said Glitter could theoretically travel to another country, but was unlikely to find one that would accept him given all the negative publicity he had received.

He said police were trying to persuade the disgraced star, who is believed to be in an airport hotel room, that he has no choice but to return to Britain.

Glitter has been refused entry to Thailand, despite a plea for medical treatment there.

Lt Gen Chatchawal Suksomchit, the chief of Thailand's immigration police, told the Associated Press news agency that Glitter was confined to the transit area at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

"Officials concerned are working through the process of putting him on the plane to take him out of the country, but if he continues to refuse to leave then he will be confined in the [transit] area temporarily before being taken into a detention centre," he said.

If Glitter does return to the UK, he will be met at the airport by police and required to sign the sex offenders register.

He will then be subject to monitoring and will have to tell the police where he plans to live and if he plans to go abroad. He could also face an order prohibiting him from going near children or using the internet.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said on Tuesday it was her view that he should be given a Foreign Travel Order (FTO) banning him from overseas travel.

The home secretary's announcement came after children's charity Ecpat UK accused the government of "turning a blind eye" to British sex tourists.

He's not the only British Expat that doesn't want to go back to the UK.

Got to agree with Jauntie on this one. He's small potatoes compared to a lot of them out there.

Yes you are right and that is why i said many people are better than me...

it certainly brings out my 'lynch mob mentality'.... i wish i could be more like the ugandans I was watching on telly the other day... absolutely amazing

I guess I get annoyed because there's never this type of furore surrounding worse offenders.

I dislike the type of blood lust shown by sensationalist Press Reporters. They wouldn't bother if he was an unknown, yet multiple, kiddie raper and murderer - it wouldn't sell as many newspapers in the short term.

Just brings out the lynch mob mentality. sigh

Anyway - he did it and will no doubt pay for it one way or another.

Ditto Cambodia

Ditto Morroco

etc

but what he has been convicted for is only a small amount of what he has done.

sorry i dont think his punishment was harsh enough

I know he is guilty of sexually harassing and fondling the two young girls, but I also think he is being treated 'exceptionally' by the media (considering the far worse offenders of child abuse there are walking this earth).

OK, so he was "was convicted in Britain in 1999 for possessing child pornography and served half of a four-month jail term". But, bad as that is, it isn't physical abuse.

The main crime is the one he served time for in Vietnam and IMHO he is a minor in his league when it comes to paedophiles.

What a lynch mob you lot are! sheesh.

I know I should have compassion and forgiveness etc but I cant lie and say that I do...

People who forgive heinous crimes esp against kiddies... just totally humble me.

I was watching a documentry about Uganda two days ago - about children kidnapped by LRA

I freely admit they are far better human beings than me because I just dont seem to have that capacity.

but I am in good company - Bob Geldof says he would happily shoot Kone, the leader of LRA - me too.

Actually I could watch him hang without a qualm...

it makes me want to wretch... there is no place for him on this earth's surface.

Morally I am against capital punishment my instinct just says shoot 'im.

yes we should just go and arrest him...I think we would get a lot of respect for that... and it would set a great example.

I think the british should go over there, handcuff him and take him back to the UK.

Not that I want him there! My baby sis still lives there! but it saves the UK further embaressment!

What he did faces the death penalty in Vietnam... however he got off that by paying £1,000 compensation to the families..

Me I would have happily paid that money to the families for them to persue the death penalty.

Really he is taking up too much oxygen....

Sooner or later he's going to have to face the music in England. Majid - Gary Glitter was a 70s pop star - everyone was shocked when it was discovered he had thousands of pictures of children on his computer... One of his early victims went to the police and blew his cover, so he eventually escaped to Vietnam to continue preying on kids out there.

to take advantage of the free health care system (for his supposed heart and ear problems)! On BBC Radio 2 news this morning it was reported that the travel ban should now be extended from the current six months to a period of five years for convicted pedophiles (and have their passports confiscated). I think "Glitter" is terrified at the prospect of having to face the wrath of the British public when he arrives in the UK. IMO, what he did to those poor little girls deserved a far longer sentence than three years' jail, however, he allegedly struck a financial deal with their families in return for a reduced sentence. I pity the poor Dr who has to give medical attention to this pedophile..... "Do you want to touch me there?" he used to sing in the '70s. I think he'd find a few volunteers at Heathrow itching to get their bare hands on him!!
