French Broadcasts on QBS

Both driving to, and back from, work, I listen to QBS. So much time, it seems to me, is given over to broadcasts in French. I wonder why this is so.
Are there really that many French speakers to warrant this in Qatar?

QBS easily qualifies for rating among the 10 WORST stations on the planet, that they broadcast in English,French or Swahili makes no difference whatsover...so step 1 would be to revamp the whole station, get rid of the antique pieces of furniture & the pathetic new ones they have, give it to someone who actually knows & has experience in running a REAL radio station & THEN this issue of English & French content can be resolved...

Isn't it time somebody updated services on 97.5? Really, it has become an anachronism among the many new things on the Doha skyline!

and may I say, even the so called 'English' speakers on QBC can't even speak English properly!!!

Get some native English speakers then we may be able to understand what the hell they are on about!!

a general attitude of " if you dont like it, then dont use it" .... this works when you have an option. What is the other option to QBS? once in a while if lucky some dubai radio stations come alive.

Having a good radio station relieves the pain of investing on CD's and car music systems.

It is great to have French speaking broadcast in Doha . I switch on especially for those hours in the afternoon .It may remind you here - who have English as mother tongue that not everybody is English speaking in the world . If we want to talk about justice how many percent of expats speak English as mother tongue around here ? How many percent speaks Tamil , Urdu , Hindi ?

and sometimes in Doha, we get Radio Bahrain loud and clear - a milion times better and proffessional than QBS.

Ummm, you're perfectly right! I already started (with Dracula) to collect money for a Romanian radio station. :)

I have absolutely no problem with that. What I do have a problem with is the fact that there is only ONE English station and it's not even entirely in English -- yet I bet English speakers (both first and second) vastly outnumber the French speakers here.

As it is, I do follow your advice and I switch QBS off. All the time. Which is kind of sad considering the size of the population here...you'd think there would be a relatively okay radio station here with interesting programming. But there isn't.

Weather permitting, I can sometimes pull in Dubai or another station with decent music, but it's so hit-or-miss that I just keep the radio off entirely and simply listen to my own tunes.

MD, there is a lot of bandwidth available for everybody! I really like to hear some Italian, Spanish, German, Dutch, even Romanian language radio here in Doha. The only thing they can do is to split this two programs (English and French) in two different radio station. Simple, isn't it?

By anonymous• 24 Oct 2009 11:39

The point is that they occupy valuable bandwidth with their rubbish, Gica.

Every time I hear the French programs come on QBS, I roll my eyes.

Almost immediately I switch to my CD player. I can't stand them.

Not that the English broadcasting is any better mind you...I just get irked that they stick the French programming on the ONE English radio station we have here.

Why not give them their own station? If there's enough of a Francophone culture present here in Doha to warrant several hours of programming every day on the English station, then clearly there is the critical mass necessary to let them have their own station.

You'd think that in 2009 -- now that we've got the Islamic Museum and Education City and the Pearl and all these new and wonderful things -- that they'd get their acts together about radio programming.

At this point it's kind of too late IMHO. I think most folks have gotten into the habit of turning it off or just using their CD/MP3 player, so that when/if QBS ever DOES get better organized and get better programs/DJs/whatever, nobody will even bother checking them out because they'll already have found a substitute.
