Five-meter Zidane ‘head-butt’ statue goes up on Corniche

shabina921

A new landmark is being erected on Qatar’s Corniche this morning: a five-meter (16-foot) high bronze statue depicting a famous scene of two fighting footballers.

The controversial sculpture, ”Coup de Tête” - or “Head Butt” in English - was created by Algerian artist Adel Abdessemed, and captures the moment when French football player Zinedine Zidane head-butted Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup.

QMA explains to Doha News why they've bought and installed the statue, which will become a permanent fixture on the Corniche:

How do you define worshipping, Thelonus? Does it mean that having a pictiure of your love ones prohibited also? The commandment is NOT to have an image or idol which will be worship as God. But picture or statues is ok until one kneels and worship them.

This subject of picture making is far from just black and white. There are many contradicting views and explanations of these texts and the regulations on picture/image making. And exceptions to the rules as well(which again are not all agreed upon)In fact there are books written on this topic with various views of different scholars. So best not to make any judgments here without thorough study.

That said I personally find the statue in poor taste for the message it can send across and will be quite happy if it was pulled down.

Pictures of stuff are really dangerous and statues are worse. I know what to do, proclaim zidane as my god and will be known be known as a zidanist of the church ZZ. I will enact blasphemy laws to persecute anyone who questions our faith and being attacking anyone who does not accept zidane as the one and only god. Pilmgrimidge will be to maracana every two years for the rio derby.

Palancole, I quote what you just said..

"Once he was upset with either his wife or his daughter about a certain curtain which had an image of a living thing on it."

I wonder why do we have pictures of the king and heir apparent everywhere in alomost all Islamic Gulf countries?

By Palancole• 4 Oct 2013 00:38

I agree with Thelo on many points he said. although he says he is not a Muslim, he does understand some issues about Islamic prohibitions. For example, the prophet forbid any kind of image depicting the human shape. Once he was upset with either his wife or his daughter about a certain curtain which had an image of a living thing on it. In another tradition the prophet is reported to have said that whoever makes a statue will be asked to breathe a soul in it on the day on Judgement. I agree with the Saudis regarding their prohibition for promoting statues. And I would certainly agree with Thelo when he said all types of statues of living things are Haraam in Islamic traditions.

Fans don't cool the air. They blow the air at the ambient temperature. The cooling effect comes from the evaporation of perspiration, as well as increased heat conduction by moving the hotter air close to the heat source away.

A statue that resembles an actual living person being displayed in Qatar. Guess this is a first!

Ambassador he maybe, but this creation of Zidane still is suspect and contravening to say the least, specially when you have it in full view of youngsters who will obviously not grasp what an ambassador, is but will take the message depicted only by face value, and then attempt to duplicate the action with their mates!

Whilst on a religious aspect the topic of picture making and creating objects that resemble the creation of God, the allowed, forbidden and gray areas pertaining to it, is a much disputed and debated upon topic that to date remains a matter of contradiction even between scholars that generally share the same school of thought, the fact remains this statue does in fact depict a violent and antagonistic view on sports. Hence I for one would like to know why(if there is really a reason) Qatar chose to have this statue on display in such a prominent and populated area in the city.

Bearing in mind that kids frequent this area so often, what kind of message are they sending out here?

The QMA's public arts director made an interesting remark about this:

"It’s a huge sculpture, and it’s done in the same style as Greek Mythological statues, but this glorifies human defects instead. It shows that although we sometimes treat footballers like gods, they’re not - they’re just human beings.”
