Fire Hazard at Villagio
My husband and myself were at Villagio at 1.30pm today and we saw that the fire door near Qtel near the the toilets was padlocked shut.
We were quite shocked by this and immediately went to the security desk to complain. Their response was that Villagio was not officially open till 1.30pm and they would unlock it then. I said what if there was a fire in the mean time, but their response was that there were not may people around and it was not a problem. Seeing as this fire exit is next to at least 6 restaurants and that would increase the likelihood of a fire I said it was more likely for a fire to start here than in any other part of villagio. Their lack of response or concern just defied logic.
Does Qatar have legislation which makes this illegal? If not why not?
Positive site, where did u come up with the information on this posting? I'm pleased I discovered it though, ill be checking back soon to find out what additional posts you include.

I am surprised for that, i never heard that in qatar before even if i live in there, some people are pridicting that the fire was on purpose, unfortunetly it was for that locked door, but the question is, the fire happened because of the electricity, but why didn`t the people in nike (the fire started in nike) ring the fire alarm quickly? was it that they just ran away? but the stupidest thing about it is because that children were in a nursery,i went into that nersury for my little sister and we were surprised! that place was like a store room! you would hardly hear anything in the corridors! that is why they didn`t go out, that is why they got trapped by the collapsed stairs, that is why they died by smoke because there were no windows! THAT MANEGER DESERVES EVERY BAD PUNISHMENT FOR MAKING A NURSERY IN A STORE ROOM AND WITHOUT ANY ACCEPTION FROM ANY TYPE OF SAFETY! NO LOVE OR PEACE SHOULD BE FOR THAT MANAGER! he didn`t think of people or saftey well at all! even though, i can prove that qatar is safe, but not villagio, because of that manager, he was going to kill thousands of people! there was even a school trip there! -and sorry for the long comment but shame of him that manager, i am such in a bad mood untill now! i will still be! i know one 3 of those kids who died, they were adorable! they were one of the greatest! but not anymore, i wish good luck for the familys who lost some there kids, but i am quite sure, there may not be any happiness from them, some of them lost all of there kids, sadly. i am going to stop now, might cry again.
My deepest condolences :(

Why dont the management/authorities listen!!!!!
from Novita77 2009 - see post above and the photo!!
novita77 said Villagio already had a fire ...
Villagio already had a fire sometimes back, Paul's kitchen was on fire and it closed for sometimes.
This is disaster waiting to happen.

This thread should be sent to all local media so that the Authorities have lot to answer, the entire Villagio Management should be questioned and strict action should be taken so that such things never repeat in Qatar.
Oh no. As if it matters what time it is!! If there are people in the building (employees or customers), the fire doors stay unlocked! Madness. This is too heart-breaking.
OMG!!!!
They have a lot to answer for!
Now they have to answer soooooooooooooooooooooo many questions
and be responsible for whatever deaths and juries
OMG إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون
jjj, that was saturday, the shops all open at about 10am. I know on friday they open after noon.
I cant remember the timing exactly, but i remember on that day 28th feb we finished son's football at 12.20 noon ish, then we stuck in al waab street for ages, after that had lunch at macaroni grill. I confidently said it was after 1.30pm.
Hi Novita - was it before 12.30 or after 1.30. when we came across the padlocked door it was 12.30 (I know it said 1.30 in my original post apologies for the typo). their reasoning was that villagio was not officially open for another hour so it should not be a problem?? But we saw plenty of people eating at the restaurants and as you know this is one of the primary causes of fire in commercial premises. Thanks
jjj75, saturday lunch time 28th feb.
That is exactly what I am talking about - I think someone needs to complain to the Civl Defence, I personally have no evidence bar my word (neither myself nor my husband has a picture phone) don't know how they would react to my just telling them??
Novita - what time were you at Vill. when you took those pictures???
Novi, I agree with tallg. This is really disturbing!
There's been more than one fire at Villagio; I remember Sarai was closed for a while because there had been a fire.
Novi - you should send the pics of the fire exit to the newspapers.
after looking at these pictures, sure a disaster waiting to happen!
Villagio already had a fire sometimes back, Paul's kitchen was on fire and it closed for sometimes.
This is disaster waiting to happen.
I was there today :
hopefully with passage of time, people will adopt an attitude to keep an open exit for fire hazard
i beleive on that most of that bulidings are teporary use like roads and too many others
Brits and Americans don't work in shops here, and more importantly they don't get stopped from entering malls.
Stealth. Don't know of Brit/American shop workers in Doha ;o)
i have one co2 cylinder in my kitchen which shows low pressure for the last 8 years.........the last time it was serviced was in 2001 feb according to the tag on it.
Aana free, jaana free,
Pakde gaye tho khana free.
...and the nepalese...
you missed out the brits and the amercians baldrick....
... and do you know why they padlock them ...?
I witnessed a Filipino shop worker letting in his bachelor kabayan at one of these exits 'cos the security wouldn't let them in through the guarded entrance!!!!
I'm not blaming a race, just reporting what I saw. Maybe Indian/Pak/Leb/Egyptian shop keepers do the same.
If someone happens to be going to Villagio later near that area, would you take a look to see if they did in fact unlock the fire door - Thanks
Yikes, good to know. Padlocking shut an emergency exit defies all sense. Well, as they say on the airplane - know your closest exit and the alternative!
Mandi
I saw exactly the same at the Exhibition Centre; Signs directing people to emergency exit that was padlocked shut.
And have you ever tried to leave the bar at the Ramada after the Comedy Club finishes - the staircase is usually padlocked shut!
These things are hardly a surprise here, even if there are laws and legislations against it.
They also have very "strict" traffic laws, but...
Qatar has very strict legislation in this matter. Civil defence must approval ALL building designs before they can even commence construction.
