Ex-wife sets wedding tent on fire in Kuwait!!

verisimilitude
By verisimilitude

A fire in a wedding party tent that killed 43 women and children in Kuwait was started deliberately by the ex-wife of the bridegroom, a Kuwaiti newspaper said today.

Al-Qabbas said that the 23-year-old former wife had admitted pouring petrol on the cotton tent and setting it on fire, furious at what she called her “bad treatment” by her former partner before their divorce. There was no official confirmation of the alleged confession.

Firefighters said that the blaze took less than three minutes to rip through the marquee, in which as many as 180 women and children were celebrating the wedding party. Many of those who died were killed in the stampede for the sole exit.

The men at the party celebrated in a separate tent, in line with the tradition of the conservative state.

The blaze in Jahra, 50 miles west of Kuwait City, was the worst civil disaster in the emirate’s history. The inferno was so intense that many of the charred bodies would have to be DNA tested for identification, officials said.

At least 90 people were injured in the blaze, and the number of deaths rose overnight to 43.

Local media said that some of the victims were related to people who had died in a similar tent blaze last year.

“It was a horrific scene with bodies and many shoes stuck to the ground at the only exit — they must have trampled over one another,” said Brigadier General Jassem al-Mansouri, the head of the fire department, after Saturday night’s tragedy.

"Most of the bodies were charred, many could not be immediately recognised. Forensic officials are working to identify the bodies."

must be group of evil women

"I did warn my husband against taking up a new wife. I had to take revenge against my husband and his sisters. His sisters are the cause of my misery and my conflicts and clashes with my husband. He had a weak personality and his sisters were behind all the problems we had. They even kicked me out of the house and worked on him getting married again to spite me. I had to wreck the wedding in any form. I reflected on a number of options, but when I heard that it was going to take place in a tent, I decided to set it ablaze," she said.

Kuwait fire ‘revenge’ of former wife

AFP/Kuwait City

A total of 43 women and children have died and 90 other people were injured in the inferno

The ex-wife of the groom at a Kuwait wedding where a raging fire killed 43 women and children has confessed to starting the blaze as an act of revenge, local newspapers reported yesterday.

Al Qabas newspaper said the 23-year-old woman had told police she used petrol to torch a wedding tent packed with women and children to avenge her ex-husband’s “bad treatment” of her before their divorce.

Interior ministry spokesman Colonel Mohamed al-Saber told state-run Kuwait Television that Saturday’s fire—which engulfed the tent in just minutes and triggered a panicked stampede—was an act of arson.

“We have identified the perpetrator who confessed to committing the crime for personal reasons,” Saber said, without giving any further details.

Interior Minister Sheikh Jaber Khaled al-Sabah informed the weekly session of the council of ministers yesterday that the fire was an “act of arson” and that the perpetrator will be referred to court.

“‘Spurned’ woman unleashed fury,” was the headline in the English-language Kuwait Times newspaper, which said the bride escaped injured but that her mother and sister were killed.

Quoting unnamed security sources, Al Qabas said the first wife’s Asian maid told police she saw her pouring petrol around the large women-only tent in the town of Jahra before the blaze started.

A total of 43 women and children have died and 90 other people were injured in the inferno, fire chief General Jassem al-Mansuri said, the deadliest civilian disaster in the modern history of the Gulf state.

Health Minister Helal al-Sayer said that 38 wounded women have been discharged after receiving the necessary treatment.

Of the 52 wounded still in hospital, at least five are in critical condition with extremely severe burns, the minister said, adding that some others have suffered moderate burns.

Last year, two women died and several others were wounded in a similar incident in Jahra which lies 50km west of the capital and has a population of around 500,000, most of them tribespeople.

Most wedding parties in the state are segregated in line with local tradition.

Mansuri said on Sunday that most of the bodies were charred beyond recognition and that forensic officials were working to identify the victims.

Thirty-one of the dead were buried on Sunday and yesterday while forensics officials are still busy trying to establish the identities of the other victims. At least seven of the dead are children.

Specialised medical teams from Germany and Britain were scheduled to arrive yesterday to treat the injured.

The government has formed a high-level committee to investigate the incident amid sharp criticism by lawmakers that authorities were too slow in the rescue operations.

If it was a matter of revenge, I am surprised that she did not do something directly to the husband.

One of the comments here was that this action showed why her husband had divorced her...quite a big statement...we do not know what was happening between them and also, do not forget that in the Arab world, esp. in the Gulf, it does not take a lot or long to divorce a wife, even for no reasons, but because of his mood. I have a friend who got married and he got her divorced after a week mentioning no reasons (divorced her orally by saying "Anti taliq" or "you are divorced"). Therefore,we cannot judge without knowing the story precisely.

My comment does not have any relation to my attitude toward the crime, but I just wanted to point at the previous comment.

Salam and peace be upon all of you.

Her actions should not be excused.Don't have any sympathy for this woman. Whatever problems she had with her ex-husband should she have taken it out on him and not 43 women and children who had nothing to do with her and her ex-husband. I hope this woman gets charged to the fullest. she committed mass murder. She'll probably get the death penalty.

Just a thoughtless act of revenge that went terribly wrong, Funny, I actually feel pity for the poor culprit,She will have to live the rest of her life with the lives of the innocent victims on her conscience. That is if she gets to live much longer. Terrible shame.

How come a tent accommodating such a large number of women and children with so many electrical connections has only one exit?!

Obviously there isn't enough security measures set by the Kuwaiti Civil Defense system.

We hear about too many fire incidents in Kuwait.

Slick reformulation of facts to suit a personal agenda. Won't fly this time ;)

She deserves the lynch mob, even if she is a nutcase. But it's not uncommon among today's youth. To me the gist lies in the fact she is 23. Look at Europe and the horrific murders committed on a weekly basis by youngsters. I'd blame her parents too for bringing her up without some basic morals.

It was a "tent" accident this time. What's the difference between a tent accident and a "road" accident?? Normally, in this part of the world, the offenders get away with it.

I am sorry, but we live in a PC world run by neo commie pinkos..

I would again repeat what I said ..

We need to first look at her mental state when carrying out this crime. Perhaps she was from a dysfunctional family. Perhaps her father or uncle abused her at an early age. Perhaps her first husband was violent with her. Perhaps television was to blame. Perhaps it was that time of the month..

or does that only apply in the West ?

"When MADNESS strike...KILLING BEYOND..."

That is REVENGE...maybe she is a battered wife and was divorced by force by ex-hubby....

We cant blame her...she cant think clearly...everybody enjoying...partying and He left her MISERABLE...married another one....!

BUT she should take revenge on him...NOT involving the INNOCENT ONES...nway who knows what will be our reactions if we are in her shoes....

We are glad & thankfull that we are not in her situatin....

Bugger counceling, sounds like a job for a lynch mob!

Jahra is essentially a bedouin town. I used to drive past twice a day - fast - on my way to and from work. it's certainly a town where gun law rules as sometimes they would shoot at passing cars! I feel they will make their own justice in this case.

counseling in this situation is a must. Friends are gems during these times if not a professional counselor/psychologist.

Speaking your heart out, unloading your emotional baggage to a friend is very effective. Find your trusted septic tank and unload everything to pacify you of your bitterness. Friends words of wisdom are treasures on a dangerous mind.
