Ever wondered what the Apple logo represents?

Alan Turing is often considered to be the father of modern computer science.
A World War 2 code-breaker he was chemically castrated, rather than go to jail, for admitting to his homosexuality; two years later he committed suicide by injecting an apple with cyanide and written out of history. But now more than 26,000 people have signed a petition to the British prime minister seeking a formal apology and posthumous pardon.

Here is a short film:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/newsnight/8238294.stm

If you wish to sign the petition and resurrect the reputation of this visionary then you can do so here:

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/turing/

If not, then I hope you have learnt something at least.

Thank you.

Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.

Salax Microsoft used to do some work for Apple.....MS used to write the compiler for Apple software to work with the machine level.

Jobs kicked Bill and Co out after he realised Bill found out about the GUI (Mouse) interface.....and capitalised on it as he had inside working knowledge about it. Thats around the time of Windows 3.1.

.....today Microsoft owns non-voting shares of Apple.

The first Apple logo was designed by Jobs and Wayne in 1976, featuring Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. It was inspired by a quotation by Wordsworth that was also inscribed into the logo that said: “Newton… a mind forever voyaging through strange seas of thought” with ‘Apple Computer Co.’ on a ribbon banner ornamenting the picture frame.

That Apple logo was immediately changed by designer Rob Janoff into a multicolored apple with a bite taken out off its right side, better known as the “rainbow apple”.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Inc.

Apple Inc. is an American multinational corporation that designs and manufactures consumer electronics and computer software products. The company's best-known hardware products include Macintosh computers, the iPod and the iPhone. Apple software includes the Mac OS X operating system, the iTunes media browser, the iLife suite of multimedia and creativity software, the iWork suite of productivity software, Final Cut Studio, a suite of professional audio and film-industry software products, and Logic Studio, a suite of audio tools. The company operates more than 250 retail stores in nine countries and an online store where hardware and software products are sold.[2]

Established in Cupertino, California on April 1, 1976 and incorporated January 3, 1977,[5] the company was called Apple Computer, Inc. for its first 30 years, but dropped the word "Computer" on January 9, 2007[6] to reflect the company's ongoing expansion into the consumer electronics market in addition to its traditional focus on personal computers.[7] Apple has about 35,000 employees worldwide[3] and had worldwide annual sales of US$32.48 billion in its fiscal year ending September 29, 2008.[4] For reasons as various as its philosophy of comprehensive aesthetic design to its distinctive advertising campaigns, Apple has established a unique reputation in the consumer electronics industry. This includes a customer base that is devoted to the company and its brand, particularly in the United States.[8] Fortune magazine named Apple the most admired company in the United States in 2008 and in the world in 2009.[9][10]

I guess it can work on several levels:

Byte,

Turing,

Tree of knowledge.

I always thought that the bite related to "Byte"..

As far as I know, Rob Janoff who designed the logo has never alluded to it being linked to Turing...

I saw a programme years ago with Steve Jobs where he explained that it was a nod to Turing.

Are you a fellow Turingeneer too? Yeah it's an ominous symbol, and I'm glad it's everywhere :) Good on Steve for that at least (if not for everything else like DRM)...

The apple with a bite taken out of it is an homage to Turing.

Just because you could not invest on apple stocks in the past, it does not constitute for you to keep biting that good return investment apple, just keep swallowing the Microsoft logo.
