English Speaking Radio

By PeteTheBeat •
Hi, possibly a really stupid question, but I can't find any info on the net.
Is there an English Speaking Radio service in the country, if so could you let me have their website or contact details please ?
If there isn't, what do you guys listen to ? ;-)
Thanks !
Pete
i went to school with Jay Kay!
The name's supposed to come from something Giles Peterson said, actually. He's a legend back in England among a small but vocal minority of music fans and the bloke a lot of us try and imitate when we try and chat up women.
His nights, label (Talkin Loud) and radio show (Worldwide on BBC Radio 1) have done a great deal to promote jazz particuarly to younger people. Anway, someone is supposed to have shown him a dance record and told him it was 'acid house'. Peterson held up his own record and said 'well if that's acid house, this is acid jazz'. Although this might be absolute rubbish, Peterson has another label called Acid Jazz Records.
Acid jazz can be defined as incorproating anything from the broad genre of jazz since the late 80s that combined jazz with more dance music. However, I reckon when most people say acid jazz, they refer to a particular sound within it, one of which is a very upbeat, catchy, harmonic jazz, such as Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies, James Taylor Quartet etc. I love a lot of it, but totally understand why this is the type of jazz that drives indie fans more nuts than anything. It's unbelievably optimistic music leading many to say its totally out of touch with reality. Its just so darn cheerful!
Hope this makes sense.
Be lucky. ;)

I still don't recognize any of these artists soundtracks you just mentioned. I like listening to Ella, Gladys and Donny though. I think thats the closest thing to jazz that I listen to. What's acid jazz?
Jay Kay is the lead singer of Jamiroquai famous for his stupid hats, fast girls and fit women. The band became famous for making some pretty good acid jazz but outlived the era because of their commercial success. I actually really rate them. You'll know them from Virtual Insanity, the Godzilla soundtrack or recently Feels Just like it should.
Andy Williams, on the other hand, is a very old fashioned US singer, popular since the 1950s. He probably sums up the stereotype of a crooner as well as anybody: Moon River is his theme tune, bad golf jumpers etc. He's often called 'a poor man's Frank Sinatra' which I think is very unfair, because really any man who opens his mouth to sing is a poor man's Frank Sinatra'. You'll have heard him on the reissue of 'Music to watch the girls go by' in the late 90s. As an unashamed jazz geek, I have to admit I quite like him too.
Loki - thanks for the support. Acid jazz til I die. Remember: we're better than M-People! Keep the faith! ;)
... it was not a (thinly) veiled criticism.... :)
Don't mind a bit of acid jazz myself, actually...
cheers
Who are J Kay and Andy Williams?
I'm afraid so. Just think of me as a younger J-Kay, but without the stupid hats. Or money. Or cars. Or beautiful women. Or talent. Actually, I'm nothing like J Kay. More Andy Williams. ;)

... would that include acid jazz....? :)
Yeah, not been totally enamoured by the radio since I got here. I guess if you've got an i-pod or whatever you can just download shows/music from the net but I reckon a radio station isn't just about the music, its about creating a sense of community a bit too so I'd love to see the radion station developed. To be fair, there's this German MTV sounding guy on that does a rock show. It's not my thing particularly but I thought he was doing a pretty good job; certainly I listened longer than I planned to.
Anyway, if anyone from the radio's listening and they want a specialist downbeat/jazz DJ, get in touch. No? Fine. I'll get my coat...

You can receive the BBC World Service on 90.3 FM from Abu Dhabi in most parts of Doha - it's in English in the daytime only, although occasionally switches to Arabic without warning! In Qatar BBCWS is in English at night time only, on 107.4.
QBS in English is horrible, frankly, apart from some bought-in programs that suddenly drag it into the late 20th century!
I can't get used to or appreciate most of the new stuff......oldies have much more to offer.....
I can't really get accustomed to rap........especially with all the crappy, lude and x-rated lyrics........It's a good thing young people(according to my daughter) don't listen/focus on the lyrics....it's the tune that catches their attention......
What a shame......only enjoying half of the song...."oldies" had fabulous lyrics......lol(now 80's music is considered "oldies")
I guess this means I am officially over the hill!!!
NONE needs to know about other peoples so-called humps and lumps!!!! Spare us all.!!!.lili.
Dead ppl can go back to their graves and rot for all I care.
QBS is on 97.5.
So, what number is QBS?
Not sure where you're going with this, but the local English Language Station, QBS Radio, plays mostly pop & rock & rap & stuff, especially in the evenings. They often have specialist DJ shows, but DJs come & go, so someone with a proposal for a new programme will most likely get a hearing. Someone with a proposal for a new, independent, foreign owned radio station won't.
I've checked and I'm pretty sure you can't listen on-line.
We need to consider how many potential listeners there are for a new radio station or a revamp of the existing;
under 20
under 40
over 40
So lets have your estimates then....
Dead people need to benefit from radio stations as well as the living Bajesus......
Something that doesn't play music from before I was born. Thats the trend QBS has been following lately. Music that caters to dead ppl.
Right then Loki, what type of station would you choose to have ?
oh god not another golden oldies station.....
Can't say I like Radiohead, sort of drags me down, I prefer something a bit more uplifting, Bon Jovi perhaps... ;-)
get an iPod and an FM Tuner and you've got your own radio stationed fully loaded with some radiohead

You may find you need to change your proxy server settings or not depending on what Q-tel (qatar phone company) are up to. Proxys are available on the web and you will know if it works or not as soon as you hit the proxy homepages, if its blocked by Q-tel then it wont work, find another.
Thanks guys, so what you're saying is, there is a need for a local station, appealing to the English speaking community, with a variety of music
mmmm, I feel a letter to the Ministry coming on....
