A wave of charged particles from an intense solar storm is pummeling the Earth right now, which may trigger stunning aurora displays and cause minor disruptions to satellites over the next two days, NASA scientists say.

solapokan, Our sun is a star but not big enough to become a supernova. What you said is true for big stars but not our sun.
Our sun is just a star, a dwarf star fueled by fusion and eventually will die. Stars during their dying stage are becoming unstable growing in size for so many times becoming a supernova, it will then explode throwing everything nearby and collape and turns into black holes.
Do not worry about Sun and Earths' end, lets help the fellow humans and be kind to all before our own end comes near....
solapokan, Looking at the size of the sun, its said that this will never become a supernova. It will become a white dwarf after the stage of red giant. But this will happen after about 5 billion years as the sun is in its main sequence now.
Solar flairs are a constant feature but the intensity varies after every 11 years and so this year it will be high. There is no evidence to tell that it will contribute to melting of snow..but you never know. The best one can do is to take a vacation to any place in the scandinavian islands and experience the northern lights.

Is the end near? definitely NO, it is still a long way to go of after unimaginable billions of years. The sure way to end it all is when the sun started to die and then it begins transforming into a supernova then it will engulf all the planets. It will be one of the brightest thing in the universe then.
