Silverstone in jeopardy as Qatar's £500m deal stalls

The long-term future of the British Grand Prix is back in jeopardy as Inside Sport reveals that a proposed 'takeover' of Silverstone, backed by Qatari money and potentially worth £500million, is off.

What a mess British sport is in. Without Qatar, the Grand Prix falls apart. Shows how much British are depending on Qatar investments. For the sake of those whose jobs in UK depends on Qatari investment, I hope a deal can be arranged.

That would be bad for your football teams who rely so heavily on foreign players and coaches.

The deal with Qatar may be off, but Silverstone has commitment from Bernie Ecclestone for the long term..

2022 maybe the immigrants will stop flocking to the UK if they read your articles.

For the sake of the employees I hope it works out. The newspaper did not seem optimistic. What a shame to have to rely so much on foreign money. I hope the British economy improves soon. There is only so much Qatar can buy.

Im sorry but wrong again..

And I quote

"I can reveal that a second group of would-be investors are interested in stepping in.

The Anglo- American syndicate of big-hitters from finance and sport includes Sir Richard Branson as a commercial partner and is codenamed Project Penelope."

So there is already a joint UK-American partnership interested..

Qatar were trying to pay to become the Preferential bidder but simply got tired of waiting and channeled the money elsewhere..

Don't worry though this is standard in the UK the papers make everything sound ten times worse than it is...

But if you cut through all the crap the Headline Should be:

Qatar withdraws bid for UK Grand Prix but Anglo American group remains interested..

But as you can see that is alot more boring

Yes, no need to panic. The article addresses the 'longterm' threat. Hard to imagine domestic funds to the tune of 500 million suddenly appearing, though, which leads limited longterm options. That is the point of the article.

Obviously Qatar didnt think it was a good investment so they pulled out of the deal thats what happens in business in a free economy

If you read the article the Grand Prix will be at Silverstone until 2026!!!!!!

So this is hardly an urgent requirement for investment!!!

It will be up to them to invest the money in the future or get another investor simple as that..

Except when Qatar changes its mind and something like the Grand Prix fails.

Qatar have hardly bought the UK...

That is what happens in a free economy anyone is allowed to buy what they wan't..

Its nothing new and happens all around the world.. The difference here is that is actually Qatar as a country buying up interests in the UK..

Well the AlThani's investment group anyways

This is exactly what an economy in recession needs investment..

The danger is, if one investor owns to much of one sector and can control the market, this isn't allowed to happen in the west as the anti competition regulations will prevent this.

For some reason Qatar seems obsessed with investing in the UK which is a good thing for the UK

Yes, but the problem is that British own less and less of them. Chelsea, Manchester United, etc. etc. etc. No even Grand Prix is soon to be over without foreigners paying for it.

Great link Khanan. Very true.

I also understand over 70% of the F1 teams are based in the UK.

I guess the UK is in real trouble sports wise with richest football league in the world, 2012 Olympics, 2017 World Athetics to name but a few.

I think it is terrible that Britain cannot fund its own sporting ambitions. Too bad for it that it must rely on Qatar investment, which can be pulled if the deal is not right. This poor British lose there jobs if not for Qatar's wealth investment.
