Egyptian director calls2 legalize prostitut'n

A well-known Egyptian movie director has drawn the ire of Egypt’s Muslim scholars by appearing on an Arab satellite TV channel and calling for prostitution to be legalized.

Inas El-Degheidy made the remarks in a show about social issues relating to women and sex, drawing sharp rebuke from religious authorities at Al-Azhar.

But Degheidy told AlArabiya.net that she won't back down from her comment, adding that her aim is to protect – not corrupt – Egyptian society, as some of her critics have charged.

"Prostitution is everywhere in the world, and it is in Egypt anyway. The problem is that it's done in secret and prostitutes might be carriers of fatal STDs," Degheidy said.

If legalized, Degheidy said each prostitute could undergo health and safety checks each year in order to have their licenses renewed.

Degheidy acknowledged that she is not a religious affairs expert, saying her opinion was inspired by logic and commonsense.

"We should face reality instead of avoiding it, and this is the first step towards protecting society whether or not it is acceptable," she added.

But Al-Azhar University professor Sheikh Mohamed Al-Moukhtar Al-Mahdy dismissed Degheidy’s demand as “a secular call that is against all religions.”

He added that Degheidy was trying to destroy Arab and Muslim society by Westernizing it and taking it back to the pre-Islamic era when people used to practice vice freely.

"She shouldn't interfere with society if her way of protecting it is by moving humans to the level of animals and by violating all social and religious principles," he said.

In Lebanon, it was legalized and controlled. Ironically, the red light district was right behind the Lebanese CID headquarters. When the civil war started in 1975, things went out of control. Now they are everywhere. It's becoming a scary scene.

They won't catch AIDS if you screen the prostitutes:)

I think we are in agreement on the key areas.. I think "Johns" , especially married ones, should be named and shamed...

NO! LOL but I don't believe we should punish them all (not to mention the innocent families of these johns)!

I'm a bit of a beliver in karma, and I do believe that a higher force will take care of those who do it for the wrong reasons. Ie. they'll catch AIDs or end up in prison.

I still believe our "human" laws should try to protect these women as much as possible. I can't live with a dead pro or a dead child of a pro on my consicious.

At the end of the day Brit we have to call a spade a spade, there are women who do go into prostitution for easy money but I really do think they are the minority and legalizing does enforce STD tests which does better society on a whole.

Should more money go into social and prevention programs YES, but we shouldn't just let the women who slip through the cracks slip through the cracks.

There will always be those people who's main goal is to hurt others and to profit for themselves, they are beyond help. But we shouldn't stop trying.

I would say Most women. Some do admit to going into prostitution for easy money and lifestyle.. These are usually the higher class "call girls"..

I would again stress on the importance of providing social and welfare support systems, rather than legalizing prostitution... That is my personal opinion.. It seems to me that by legalizing you are promoting the concept of a woman as a sexual object and something to be "used" for a male's sexual gratification..

Look at Holland. Prostitution is legalized, yet street hookers still exist in large number .. (So, I've heard)

I mean No! ( exclamation mark) not NO, (comma) IF God did send his messengers I don't believe that it was with the message that we should shun non-belivers, especially the most unfortunate (ie beggars, addicts, prostitutes) and that we should be doing what we can to protect them. The minimum of that is legalizing prostitution so that it can be controlled, and these women can be tested, the next step up (very close step, that comes before or after the need to resort to prostitution) is providing social programs to help these women find something better.

I've known and grown up with women and mothers in desperate situations and I truley believe that NO women resorts to prostitution because she thinks it's fun.

Are you saying "NO God sent his messengers" or "NO! God sent his messengers"???

You are right. These women need to be protected and safeguarded..

Perhaps, rather than legalizing prostitution, which means that they stay prostitutes, we as a society should be working to help them and support them to find other means of employment and make their lot better..

NO God sent his messengers to explain to those who listen what is wrong and what is right. Society vs. The Individual are two entirely different things. It is up to the Individual to accept God's teachings and live by them, not the society as a whole. One of God's main teaching is that YOU cannot enforce religion on anyone and that you should forgive those who trespass against you. Therefore as a God=fearing person you should be trying to do everything you can to protect these women, which includes legalizing prostitution and enforcing STD checks. At the end of the day judgement is up to God, and I would rather be seen to be helping these women as much as possible then throwing them out into the cold to die.

It is not Good to legalized any crime or sin in society. It is true sins are part of the man's life because Man's origin with sin but Allah Almighty sent His prophets to teach the society to avoid these sins. thses sins has not only bad in ethic but they have many bad results. supose if a sin has legalized then some day other will be need legalized other sin. so it will be the society of sins and human being will not have any value. I killer will like to kill and will ask to legalized the killing so that director will like to be killed by the hand of that killer.

i have little time otherwise i explain more

wish all the best

Well, It's been there since the time of Mohammed and Jesus, it's still here now. Let God be there punishers, not us. We should do everything we can to protect these women and men.
