Egypt - Police Officer Is Sentenced to Death

britexpat
By britexpat

I don't really know where I stand on this. I understand that after the revolution, there is always a call for "vengence". But, was the policeman not just carrying out orders ? Should he be held accountable or his superiors ?

What say you?
_____________________________________

A Cairo court sentenced a rank-and-file police officer to death after trying him in absentia for the killings of unarmed protesters during the Egyptian revolution, the harshest sentence given to date as the military-led interim government grapples with calls for retribution against members of the former government.

The sentence is the latest indication that Egyptian courts are willing to deal severely with former officers and officials of the government of Hosni Mubarak, the ousted president.

As many as 100 police officers have been detained on allegations of having shot protesters during the revolution, and dozens of senior Mubarak government officials are in custody awaiting hearings on charges of stealing public money, including the former president and his two sons.

Although public calls for retribution against members of the security forces continue, some people worry that police officers have become timid in enforcing the law since the detention of officers accused of using force under the orders, or the expectations, of the old government. One result, these people say, is the wave of crime and disorder that Egypt is now experiencing.

Understandably they want people to pay for ‘crimes’.

However as usual it is the minions that will pay for the crimes of the people that give the orders.

As usual the 100 people at the bottom of the hierarchy will pay the price of ‘the one’ at the top.

This man may be guilty but the 'others' are far guiltier - but the ‘lower man’ has to pay the ultimate price.

True, brit. However, We will NEVER fully forgive them until they have been tried. Aladly SHOULD be hanged. They've shot dead and ran over my unarmed brothers and sisters, leaving over 900 dead, and about 6000 injured (in 18 days??). Many protesters are left with one eye, blind, or paralyzed. Not to mention thousands of Khalid Said by the old system.

It's even suggested that MOI would change their uniform to appease the nation.

Overall, a lot of good has been materialized, so far, elhamdul'Allah. This land in ours now. I guess it'd take about 2-3 years to stabilize. Egypt 2020 is going to be new Egypt..:)

The March must continue.

Britexapt, a bit of correction is due here. We're not seeking any sort of retaliation whatsoever, and scapegoating is not condoned. We're pressing for just, fair, public, civil- non-martial trail.

Moreover, the officer's boss; snake-head OUSTED minister of interior has been initially sentenced to 12 years and fined in millions. All the OUSTED EX-gov is in jail already. Mubarak and his 2 sons are awaiting trial, for high treason and for ordering our killing from Jan 25th-Feb 11.

And no, officers are not that innocent, you should see them now kissing civilians feet to forgive them for their pitch dark record. We're struggling to open a new page with them, after all, there are good officers out there. The good of Egypt is our focus.

Egyptians, see you in Tahrir this Friday, May 27th. The demands of Jan 25th are not fully met, yet. Revolution is far from over.

He was rejected by the Academy of Arts in Vienna as "not talented". Then he went to Germany and joined some putschists in Munich. He was arrested and spent one year in jail where he wrote his book "Mein Kampf." In order to become chancellor he changed his Austrian citizenship to German. Guess he was around 30 years old then. So, he was Austrian. And Einstein was German even though the Americans claim him.

Yes you're right Brit, my bad, these are the countries were it's illegal: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Switzerland.

Given that many of these countries were the most directly effected by the Nazi's and the holocaust it isn't surprising that they have made holocaust denial illegal.

Point is though, in most of the West it is perfectly legal to deny the Holocaust. However as you rightly pointed out, not many people see the need to debate the topic, as the evidence is so overwhelmingly in favour of their having been a Holocaust.

By britexpat• 25 May 2011 13:44

I believe that Holocaust denial is illegal in many more countries of europe.

I am at a loss to understand why we really need to debate the holocaust after all these years.. the issue is not the holocaust itself, but Xenophobia and ethnic cleansing which still occurr today..

Why are people under the impression that you can't debate the holocaust in the West? With the exception of Germany and Austria (where holocaust denial is illegal) you are free to discuss the holocaust in every Western country. And people do debate it.

Nic, yeah. Actually I wasn't much surprised from what went on here. I know a few guys personally, and - what do you say - they are pretty different on the beach. However, sometimes some hidden features shine through their comments. But since there are 6.5 billion people, I always am prepared for 6.5 billion different opinions, or individual truths. And some, of course, are 'hard-liners'. Brainwashed by their culture and family. They have a brain, but they can't find the power button to switch it on. There is no way to help them, unless you are Jesus. But I am not willing to land on the cross for their rescue!

As good as it can gets in Qatar, a few things here and there such as:

most of the people of a certain religion are unable to step out of the box of that religion and criticize it. Certain believes are coercively engraved, making it impossible for the individual to separate himself from those believes, etc, etc, etc...

What about you?

You are one of the few interesting commentators with a free mind set. Provocative but with tact, critical but subtle and sarcastic but humoristic participation.

We are encouraged to challenge limits, to step out of the comfortable zone and that there are no limits. Only like that you are able to learn new perspectives, new points of views.

Nic, the rules of a debate are unknown to most people here. Assumptions are not classified as such, they are taken as 'truths'. Opinions are not classified as such, they are taken as universal laws. There are hardly any participants here who care to define the words they are using, ignoring the fact that there are heavy semantic differences depending on one's background, history, culture, and standard of education.

By Nic• 25 May 2011 11:10

Respect is one thing. Not allowing other to express his opinion is another.

If a participant says he does not believe in god, then let’s debate rationally his point of view, not attacking him personally as that is not respecting.

My point is, we have no limits in debates and all ideas can be discussed and all point of views can be challenged with respect! As in eastern cultures, or should I correct in certain cultures where religion plays a prime role, challenging that religion is a total No No.

In the west we challenge our own religions and we debate it with open minds. That’s something impossible in certain religions/cultures.

That’s what I meant.

It is quite clear here that (yet again) there are differences between the eastern versus western approaches towards debate!

In certain educations, debate is encouraged with no limits of topics or ideas, other cultures do have quite restricted taboo areas that are untouchable.

The fun part of QL, is the debate with all and to observe how different backgrounds are able handle a debate!

...meanwhile Egypt remains pretty much the same!

Hitler was in favour of killing those whom he judged to be "unworthy of life". In a 1939 conference with health minister Leonardo Conti and the head of the Reich Chancellery, Hans Lammers, a few months before the euthanasia decree, Hitler gave as examples of "life unworthy of life" severely mentally ill people who he believed could only be bedded on sawdust or sand because they "perpetually dirtied themselves", or who "put their own excrement into their mouths, eating it and so on".[21]

One of the foundations of Hitler's social policies was the concept of racial hygiene. It was based on the ideas of Arthur de Gobineau, a French count; eugenics, a pseudoscience that advocated racial purity; and social Darwinism. Applied to human beings, "survival of the fittest" was interpreted as requiring racial purity and killing off "life unworthy of life." The first victims were children with physical and developmental disabilities; those killings occurred in a programme dubbed Action T4.[150] After a public outcry, Hitler made a show of ending this program, but the killings continued (see Nazi eugenics).

The Holocaust (from the Greek ὁλόκαυστος holókaustos: hólos, "whole" and kaustós, "burnt"),[2] also known as The Shoah (Hebrew: השואה, HaShoah, "calamity"; Yiddish: חורבן, Churben or Hurban,[3] from the Hebrew for "destruction"), was the genocide of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, a programme of systematic state-sponsored extermination by Nazi Germany throughout Nazi-occupied territory.[4] Of the nine million Jews who had resided in Europe before the Holocaust, approximately two-thirds perished.[5] Some scholars maintain that the definition of the Holocaust should also include the Nazis' genocide of millions of people in other groups, including Romani (more commonly known in English by the exonym "Gypsies"), Soviet prisoners of war, Polish and Soviet civilians, homosexuals, people with disabilities, Jehovah's Witnesses and other political and religious opponents, which occurred regardless of whether they were of German or non-German ethnic origin.[6] Using this definition, the total number of Holocaust victims is between 11 million and 17 million people.[7]

Nic, Surat 1, Al Fatihah, (the words of Allah himself) begins with this: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."!!! (He uses a lot of self-praise, which I never understood.)

Mr.Me, ha, ha, ha. "earth needed to re generate new and clean race" - You sound like Hitler himself. And? Did it work? No, we still have Gaddafis, and Salehs, and Mubaraks, and you!

holocaust happened or not, arabs have nothing to do with that, it was all about bloody european superiority complex that was on peak those days.

we r for god,and to him will return!!!

god created us,and all wt we ever can think about, and all is back to him,.he sent many messengers to humanity in all times to keep the human kind knowing who created him and what is their cause on earth, and that there is heaven and hell.he sent noah for his people and stayed asking them to believe in god for 950 years, and those people were the worst on earth where all sins and crimes happend and started with them,.after many years of non responding earth needed to re generate new and clean race, and that was the need of the Deluge ,to make people believe in his existence and his power, but few who believe

+1 Mr.Me. nothing more stupid than the holocaust lie other than people who believe it, and the Zionists use it as a excuse to kill children everyday and if you even think about raising a finger about it you are either a bloody terrorist as per US definition the master of all Vetos in favor of Israel or you are an antisemtic and everybody looks at you as if you are the devil in person

It depends on your point of view, brit. 'Romeo and Juliette' is an episode. For God the deluge was punishment, for the people a tragedy. And now the Egyptians 'play God' and punish!

By britexpat• 25 May 2011 09:51
britexpat

Surely, Romeo and Juliet was a tragedy, whereas, the deluge was punishment.

Holocost had happened like the terrorism is happening now depending on the usa definition,.all the lying propaganda around wt story they need to spread, and many people r believing it,and celebrating when countries like afghanistan, pakistan, iraq, sudan, libya, fell under their hand, for only one goal,is to control the fuel and water around the world, how many of us believed usa coming to iraq for democracy, and to kill sadam for his weappons, and saddam became and very nice person comparing with bush,,,wt happened with hitler is the same wt is happeneing now,the same jews desease.the same lies, the same stupid people around the world that believe, they blame hitler for the second war,,in same time when every bad happens in the world we find usa behind it,doing the dirty job instead of jews, really world would b much more better without them

Nic, are you saying that the greatest human tragedy is the work of God, the most gracious? Then he can't be most gracious.

LincolnPirate,

To answer your question, according to the bible, god did it!

like that comment..not that many would understand.

Mr.Me the holocaust did happen and better people than u and me have verified it. The holocaust is not just about the jews, it's about man's inhumanity to man, whatever the reasons may be- race, ideology or religion.

And remember, It can happen to anyone. Do not think that if Hitler would have won, Arabs would have been safe, u need to know the Nazi definition of 'Untermenschen'.

By Nic• 25 May 2011 09:42

Egypt hasn't changed a bit!

It will take a few generations before democratic values and mentality can be perceived!

the only one falt that hitler done,,was the he didn't kill all the damn jews on earth,or we would b living in a better world, without all the damn wars happening now and caused by them.

the fake story that jews brought about holocost, was the funniest silly story written and believed by all sily people,so jews can kill and always come to cry for their sad and painful past, the stupid liars, only stupid people believe u,but now believe me,ur end is coming so fast so cry as more as u can now cz soon nobody will know about u

By anonymous• 25 May 2011 09:37

The biblical Deluge was worse! It killed everyone on Earth except Noah and his family! That's what I call a 'tragedy'!

He killed so many innocent people just because they were Jews.. The holocast was one of the most tragic of all tragidies in human history.

When the Russian Revolution happened (1917), the Bolsheviks killed not only the Czar but also his whole family. That's how it has to be done! If you are on the 'wrong' side, you are in for it.

the French revoloution sans the intellectuals. Will end up as the same.

With all due respect to the Egyptian youth who spearheaded the revolution, the initiative does not seem to be any more in their hands.

I don't like it. The man was doing his job, feeding his family. Sentencing him to death like this just sends the message that the new regime is no better than the old regime. Shameful.
