Thanks nomerci... I will grab a loaf next time I am in that direction. But I have to say I am loving my new discovery from London Bakeries at the moment, especially toasted with lashings of butter and Marmite on yum, yum ;)
The thread is about a religious festival, so is it really surprising that religion is mentioned.
I am fascinated by the idea that being a fatty is so frowned upon in Islam. I thought it was only Christians who had the sin of gluttony, but apparently "The stomach is the worst vessel to fill".
Makes the sight of all these hefty lads and ladies in Qatar all the more perplexing.
No, no, no..... News Flash! I have found a new favorite loaf of bread. Just in time as well I might add because I was just at the point of buying a bread maker. I will get more details for you when I get home, but it's by London Bakeries I think. The slices are nice and thick, and they do not turn powdery when you toast them. Not quite as big as a slice of Kingsmill, but perfectly adequate for me. And the taste is British not American (not too sweet). And at QR 6 for a large loaf I am at last happy that I have found a decent loaf of bread at a decent price here in Qatar.
My husbands brother in law had a major heart attack last night and is in the HMC cardiac unit too. He isn't Muslim and not a major meat eater but most likely may have od'ed on "other" indulgences over the festive season. Hoping he'll recover fully and will serve as a warning to the rest of his mates as well.
rightly said...this is what the Prophet has taught but then like a lot of other rulings in Islam those who actually follow it are few and far between. Which is a pity cos I am actually an advocate of eating in this manner and can vouch for how good it makes you look and feel. That said occasionally, indulging a little bit more than often, and I mean OCCASIONALLY, isn't so bad provided you are still sensible and in control. And always leave space to at least breathe! But such is the state of the world today and any celebration is often met with over indulgences in either food, drinks, or the "hard stuff"!
Hence, the two big Occasions(Festivals) have been bestowed on us by ALmitghty to Gain the spiritual happiness by taking care of the poor and needy and the neighbours etc. etc...
these cannot be harmful to Humanity at all.
Had it been harmful to humanity then Almighty had not bestowed them to us.
BTW the sufferings are nothing but caused to self by negligence and greed and carelessness of humans only.

timebandit, I think you should try some real bread...a. it tastes better (IMHO), b. it is better for your health (belly girth just being one )
If I may, I'd like to suggest you go to Spinney's and try their fresh baked "vita health", "walnut" and there are a few more to try.
They are not great for toasting, but taste very good fresh.
Good for you........ RIP Kingmill
Good for you

We all know you over indulge on Kingsmill.
I over indulged ;)
Eating your way to death or drinking your way to death..result is the same.
Better than those in Western countries who drink themselves to death as way celebration.

And btw,it's called Eid Al Adha and not Bakrid.
I thought the prophet taught that you were to fill your stomach 1/3 food, 1/3 water and 1/3 air?
Then again, if that were the case there wouldn't be so many obese people living in Qatar.
Ok, let me think this through...But;

Ramadan and Bakrid EIDs are not Festivals.
These have been turned into festivals by commercial world.
former is the reward and thanksgiving day and to enjoy after successfull completion of a month long fasting, and thanking the Almighty.
The latter is the Sunna(ritual) by Prophet Abraham(PBUH).
Side effects of all festivals are alike!
Infact, as per Islamic priniciple there must be 3 portions made out of Sacrified animal.
1. For the Poor
2. For the Relatives.
3. For Self.
Most probably there are no takers from Category 1 and 2 ultimately category 3 has to consume it all ???
apart from indigestion...there is also influx of accident-related injuries .mostly from off-roading..
Any thing too much is TOO BAD !
