I wouldnt reload until you have the data off. If you have an external USB drive. You can boot from a linux boot disk or a CD and copy the data off to the external drive. if the data is really important I would relax and just wait. It is better to be patient and not lose the data.

Try to get the original Windows XP cd, it'll save the hassle.

Don't worry, most PC problems can be solved

You mean to a cd?

Of course you have to download to the hard drive first, it's made to boot from floppy disks but try it with a cd.

Download and record to cd then put cd in laptop, then:

When you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R

You will get a dos prompt

Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter

When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter

"Y" and enter at the prompt

Then type "exit" and hit enter

The system will now reboot into Windows

If for some reason that doesn't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...

Type "chkdsk /r" then enter

When done type "exit" and hit enter.

This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

If you can't find the CD:

Go to this website and download the file corresponding to your system, XP home or XP Pro

boot disk for XP Home

Then copy it to 6 floppy disks.

Once you've done that, if you choose to follow that route, we'll take it from there.

If you want it let me know what version of Windows you're running.

sammie, you can try to get around this error but you need a recovery cd if not the original Windows cd.

If you don't have a cd you can make one. I can give you an a website address to download a boot cd, all you have to do is burn it onto a cd.

With this error you need a cd to boot from as I think your boot.ini file has become corrupted.

Snap, i'm not a computer wizard either.

Are you running any anti virus software?

Can I suggest that you have a word with some of the techies in DAGOC.

I don't know who's involved there now but someone should be able to help you out.

If you have a word with Kay in the DG's office, she may be able to help in pointing you in the right direction. Tell her Graham recommended her........ and then hide.

I will no doubt get flack for this :)

Sorry Sammie, I have just realised that you are not with DAGOC. Maybe Qatari can help, he's a geek (according to his profile).

So you didn't get any CDs with it? You can go to the Recovery Console but you need the original CD. And what does the error message say?
