Police in South Africa's capital, Pretoria, claim to have to caught the "dumbest criminal" this year.
The man walked into a station to report that he had been held up at gunpoint by a gang who had stolen his mobile phone.

But when the detective phoned the number of the phone reportedly stolen, it rang in the complainant's pocket.

"The shock left him speechless for a few minutes," said police spokesman Eugene Opperman, adding that the man, 25, was then arrested for perjury.

again mom_me you are talking of at least one or two jails in India. The rest of them have dont any of this stuff.

MOreover some of the Indian jails are occupied by prisoners from certain political parties who use them as their fiefdom and if prisoner from an opposition party turns up there he is dealt with in a very good manner

Stealth, such acts (murder inside prison) cannot be done without the help of police involvement. There is a lot of security in prison cells. Even in India (since you are Indian)each prison cell has a camera installed to monitor detail activity. The bath area is also made of specialized equipment which can not come out with force.

maybe he wanted the cops to arrest some gang members in his neighbourhood cause other people were too scared to testify agaunst them, or maybe he was just really drunk

and alot of stuff people do on the road is considered illegal in many places does that make them all criminals

and that would be making a filing a false police report not perjury he wasn't under oath

Mom_me it seems you dont read newspapers much do you?

There have been many instances of people being killed inside the jail by the inmates themselves using any weapon that they can find

Darude, you can not just kill a criminal in prison. The cell is made of special material so that the criminals don't commit suicide by taking out stuff.

Lying to the police / Authorities is called perjury and is illegal in many places, that's why he was arrested. It's like trying to mislead the police or hide evidence from them.
