DUMBEST BANK ON EARTH [may be]

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Police are looking for a New Zealand couple who disappeared after a bank mistakenly put 10 million New Zealand dollars ($6.1 million) into their account.

The couple, who ran a gas station in the northern city of Rotorua, applied to Westpac Bank for a NZ$10,000 ($6,000) overdraft and had 1000 times that amount paid into their account. The two then withdrew some of the money and disappeared, Detective Senior Sgt. David Harvey said.

Harvey said Interpol has been contacted for help, suggesting authorities believe they may have fled abroad with the cash.

‘We are currently conducting an investigation into the individuals that may have been involved in the withdrawal of that money,’ Harvey said.

Westpac Bank said in a statement it was ‘pursing vigorous criminal and civil action to recover the sum of money stolen,’ but declined further comment.

Massey University banking lecturer Claire Matthews said the ‘lucky’ recipients likely would not get away with the cash.

‘They’ve effectively, I guess, become thieves _ but it is only going to be a matter of time’ before they are found, she told the NewstalkZB radio network.

The pair would be hard pressed to argue they honestly believed they were entitled to such a huge sum of money, she added.
.
But how the hell it happened. What kind of Banking software they were using and where were RECONCILIATION dept.
.
Goshhhh, huge NIGHTMARE for a banker if he/she would have been working in any bank in Qatar.......

staff involvement and in longer period.

As it is very difficult to withdraw amount of QR 100k or above without banks internal control or audit dept's notice....check AML rules and regulations of QCB.

Even TT's for such huge amounts need various cross confirmations and through due diligence prior beneficiary get the credit into his/her account.

Atif242, i agree that errors occur occassionally and CBQ has been a good bank for me but that was a shocker.

As for AUB, i was not a guarantor or anything. Infact we both earned the same salary. Just plain silly banking procedures.

This shows the level of morality in our world. People trying to grab whatever is not theirs. Criminals always have to pay one way or other. Please be honest.

That is wrong if AHLI UNITED BANK didn't have ur written consent.

.

I think you must have acted as a GURANTOR on his behalf so he could get a high limit or atleast be eligible to have CREDIT CARD. That's why, whenever his salary/deposit was over due, they used to debit ur account for the same outstanding MONTHLY PAYMENT.

.

This is stupidity that they are asking you to get letter from ur friend asking the bank to stop debiting ur account. This doesn't make any sense as per my thinking as a BANKER

such errors do occur very occassionally so u dont have to worry at all. Plz, use this facility for ur own comfort

.

Anyhow, let me inform everybody in Qatar that QCB has set very strict rules for such facilities and does ask every bank in Qatar to abide by it

.

Moreover, a customer must always be vigilant when making transactions. In your case, you must remember that every ATM machine is under camera surveillance 24/7 again instructed by QCB. So if you didn't have anything to proof, you can give them the exact or approximate time and they will settle that dispute. Anyhow, everything should be done in writing. Never do any thing in the bank or company VERBALLY. Very dangerous error

.

Personally, I think all the banks must have standard in providing facilities to customers instructed by QCB (ofcourse). Forexample, online Banking,Online Remittance from account, submitting applications regarding renewal/lost/damage of ATM CARD and many more.

.

QCB must instruct all the banks to provide same set of QUALITY services ONLINE to their customers.

i had Ahli United Bank in Bahrain debit my bank account for my friend's credit card bills!!!!!!

I didn't realise it (no online banking) till i received my bank statement 3 months down the line. Now comes the funny part. When i complained, the bank said, get a letter from your friend which states "Please stop debiting rlasrado's account for my credit card o/s balances"

ARE U KIDDING ME!!!!

Luckily that friend of mine was a true friend and he gave me that letter else i do not what i'd do. I'd never give a letter if some tom, dick or harry was paying my credit card bills hehe

Welcome to the Gulf banking system.

i had deposited QR 5,000 through their ATM machines (cash deposit machines - CBQ). Once i inserted the money it just accepted the same and nothing happened (more like thankyou very much). No credit to my account, no ATM slip to record the transaction, NOTHING.

Luckily the branch was open and i made a complaint. I did ask them whether i should make a police complaint or what is the procedures. They were pretty cool about it saying that i should get my money back - if it was valid. I did :-)

I didn't deposit cash ever since :-)

legally it should be done like that. Have upto date info about ur own account on monthly basis atleast.

.

In this way, if any suspicious transaction has occurred you can identify it to the bank which will rectify that mistake.

.

Very effective,if bank's customer has SMS alert system activitated for every (Debit/Credit) entry in its account or CREDIT CARD

The best thing to do would be to go back to the bank and inform them about their mistake.

well it was only QAR.5000, NOT QAR 5 MILLION. I'm a banker too so I do know many incidents too but I don't think such incident of NEWZEALAND ever has happened in Qatar.

by the way it happened here in Qatar too

In the Commercial bank ..

One of my filipino collegues received 5,000 Qatari riyal in his account and he didn't know from where it came from ..

he keep waiting for 3 days to correct their mistake but they didn't so he took the money and paid his loans back home ..

after 2 weeks .. the bank discover the mistake and asked him to return it back ..

He said it wasn't my fault and it's the bank fault ..

Finally, the bank and him agreed that he will pay it back to them in the form of small installment with NO INTERESTS at all ..

Still he wins too ..

What kind of system was that ???

The couples are not theives ... The bank is fool and paying for their mistake ... and THEY SHOULD ..
