Driving In Qatar

Never seen such a dreadful driving... Who gave these people a Driving License?!!!...This is a million dollar question...

Do they really know the traffic rules??? ummmm, really doubt it...

No wonder the tragedies happening in Qatar and the rate is high. In fact, the purpose of this room's discussion is all about the safety and standards.

There is evident that 2-second rule reduced the risk of accidents dramatically. This is compulsory in Britain and as a result almost all derivers get uses to follow it and make our roads much safer.

Keeping distance is one of the basic and in the same token most important rule which all drivers MUST consider when they are behind the wheel. Unfortunately, drivers in Doha are not obeying this...

By anonymous• 18 Jan 2012 05:52

When iw as in thailand last they had big round dots ameter wide painted in the roads, with signs stating stay 2 dots behind the car in front.....

By flor1212• 17 Jan 2012 12:42
flor1212

i kept at least two car away from the car in front on me, 80, approximately 3-cars away and more than a 100 kph, I stayed not nearer than 5 cars away or more.

Do you think it will be in layman's term to explain the 2-second rule. Even in the link given by TCOM, the explanation given was way too hard to be understood unless they have given a sample computation, say with a given speed!

Yes, I am already getting old but safety in driving is a priority to me. I won't risk myself and my love ones life BUT of course, you can not control the other party/ies.

One maybe very safe in driving but the cars are not, it will be the same risk!

Qatar was hit by a series of road accident tragedies the past two weeks resulting in the death of 18 locals . The controversy of the death of four Qatari women last Friday & HMC delayed response by its ambulance team to save the victims has caused both anger & resentment from the local public demanding that local authorities take tougher actions to curb road accidents

knows this rule! When did this rule of thumb surfaced?

And I doubt if it had ever a positive result for fast driving. MAybe they should update this 2-second rule as I viewed it insufficient. A 2-second reaction time is for me is not enough!

By behviz• 17 Jan 2012 00:11
behviz

Thanks t_coffee for the link.

Basically this rule is allowing driver good and enough timing to react in case of any sudden breaks occur by the vehicle in the front.

Obviously, this is also binding with the keeping enough distance.

Flor, it is a very useful rule which reduce the risk of accident. I guarantee that most of the drivers in Qatar never heard of this rule and that is why I mentioned before: “Who gave them the DL..."

flor1212

I have never heard of that two-seconds rule? "Stay behind two seconds..."? What is that?

By behviz• 14 Jan 2012 18:41
behviz

In standard Highway Code it is defined as a 2-seconds rule...

The two-second rule is a rule by which a driver may maintain a safe following distance at any speed. The rule is that a driver should ideally stay at least two seconds behind any vehicle that is directly in front of the driver's vehicle.

The practice has been shown to dramatically reduce risk of collision, and also the severity of an accident should an accident occur.

This is one of standards we were talking about earlier on.

Q: Is this rule are practised in here. How many drivers are actually have a clue of meaning of this?

By flor1212• 11 Jan 2012 21:48
flor1212

since this is part of our Highway Engineering subject. And not only "plain" distance but, "safe" distance.

A K A, it is amazing that still some societies are not following the rules. In fact, they need to be more educated to help them to understand the rules in more depth. In my opinion, firstly, societies need to obey the rules under some sort of international standards and then other form and shapes will follow automatically.

In terms of driving in here, people are still struggling in first step to digest and grasp the basic rules, until then, we can open the next chapter and talk about rules...

Please remember, most of the driving rules are based on human logics and common senses. Without having those logics then roads will be a dangerous...

Hope above helps and answered your question.!!!

Please let me know...

Flor, just search for and see the standard of UK. We don’t need to take a test like you 100 times and still have no sense of driving...lol

And yes mate, we are in civilised world not like KSA, China or Pilipino, etc, we have a computerised test and it is very difficult not only pass the test but also getting a visa to come to UK to do it. In fact, you need to pass your skills tests to even get a visa to come to UK which you don’t have obviously.

I would suggest you to go and read more about these before open your BIG mouth.....

You would never ever get to come here, forget about passing the high standard test.... We are simply Brits and grasp it mate... you are a way behind like you “home country”.

Also FYI, I have more than 20 year, ooopppps, more than 20 year, lol, DL and passed the difficult test. BTW who were the driving instructors in KSA and Qatar??? hmm let me guess: "Friends and Family Scheme" which always put people like you in the back of the queue... lol

of sarcastic anonymous, now if you have not digested my posting, well what could I expect from someone like you. The OP was an arrogant person saying UK driving standard is the best since they are not allowed to take the driving test here.

I bet if they will be asked to, in 10, how many do you think will pass?

DD, I have a KSA, Qatar, China and of course my home town driving for 30 years, ooooppppps, I mean 29 years.

In KSA, I pass the driving test without going to driving school. China, very strict so I took a 100-item computer questioning which one should get 90 out of 100. Computer stop if you hit the 90. Computer stop at item 93 (meaning I made 3 mistake). Then took the actual driving and passed. Qatar, I did a 3-hour refresher practice (just to familiarize the driving test I will encounter) and took a direct exam and passed it also.

Philippines, honestly, after passing the medical, I just got my license! It is still with me after 29 years (Almost 30).

Need I say more? In 10 persons, how many Brits will pass the pocket parking? 10 out 10? Just wish?

I did not realise people were this amazingly thick. Let me explain something. NOT ALL RULES ARE WRITTEN!! Alot of what passes in society, wherever you are, are unwritten. thee are commonly called societies norms and when people question/challenge these, chaos ensures. Yes CHANGE does happen but only after CHAOS??. NO! there are better ways to get change. Ask any long termer here (longer than, lets say 5 years) the LAW changes that have happened that have impacted on society. An example. Smoking inside shopping malls (smoking kills more than driving , so work with me) has lessened amazingly compared to 5 years ago without people going off the deep end. I personally like driving here, and yes I am a woman. You know what to expect, people are more on the offensive thus easier to read and if you drive in a similar fashion, ie, following society's UNWRITTEN rules, you are fine! Work WITH what is there!! Much easier

Another Tip: Keeping the distance from the vehicle in front is preventing the sudden collusions and gives enough time to react...

In Doha: once drivers see the gaps, they immediately will jump in the middle. Then you keep another distance from it and guess what, another car appears in the middle and this goes on 'n' on 'n' on...

It seems that some people are still do not grasp the point ( Surinder and perhaps his friend s_Isale, surprisingly both from Indian standards..lol). It is obvious that accident may occur everywhere in the world but you should look at the statistics not individual incidents...

Qatar's driving is simply sucks and if some ppl wants to close their eyes and put their head in the sand then other will laugh at them...

Driving in here is a circus and there is no rules at all..

Acadian: I agree with you. It seems that this part of the world is still 100 years behind. Here Police cars are in roundabouts and drivers clearly breaking the rules in front of them, guess what is their reactions, PLAYING WITH BLACKBERRY.. YOHOOOOO

Tracy: I've had similar situation and believe me if these ppl can drive tank, they will drive over you..lol

I think sometimes just keep your standard within yourseld and do not let others to bring it down.

Tip: improvement only can be achievable if you listen and learn from others...

You can wear a police uniform, and the driver in the car next to you won't even bother to stop using his mobile phone! They just don't care, and they have no sense for danger. They are innocent children. Even if you (try to) prove to them that they just violated a traffic law, they will say, no, I didn't know it was meant for me.

http://news.yahoo.com/driver-sent-got-11-texts-11-min-crash-151619850.html

A 19-year-old pickup truck driver involved in a deadly highway pileup in Missouri last year sent or received 11 texts in the 11 minutes immediately before the accident, federal investigators said Tuesday.

The driver sent six texts and received five texts, with the last text just before his pickup traveling at 55 mph crashed into the back of a tractor truck, beginning a chain collision. The pickup was rear-ended by a school bus, which in turn was rammed by a second school bus.

I know a young lady who lost her hand in a driving accident here one other killed and one badly injured.

The above comments to the question seem to think its acceptable to drive badly having no regard for rules or other drivers on the road. Just because other areas of the world drive badly is that a good enough reason for it here?

Yesterday while out for the umpteenth time a driver cut across the round about not bothering to look at the road at all & almost going straight into the side of our car. Fortunately for me my husband is an excellent driver and managed to avoid the idiot.

I was in Dubai recently and they seem to manage, mirror single manoeuvres just fine!

averagely, if you have been driving here for a long period, you will just ignore these things. Time will come that yes, you'll get upset, but what to do, you can't change their attitude, if you confront them, it will just be trouble.

Best to do if you can't help is SHOUT and RANT and WHINE inside your car, BUT NEVER open the window. So you released the stressed and be back to normal.

If they flash their lights, or honk at you, give way. Maybe they have a date with Death. Or you can let 'em have a taste of their own medicine (excluding the locals). Flash 'em, honk 'em you can even engage in a staring contest with 'em. Lol.

The question is not about the rush, it is about obeying the basic rules, such as signalling, prioritising the way in roundabout, safety for the passengers, especially for children, politeness for others, changing corrects lanes, and so on.

I've been driving here long enough and know how to drive, thanks very much.. But still don't get the rudeness of the ppl who are driving and more importantly the people like you who are supporting them,,,

Now this shocking that you accept the rules of 100 years ago... I think you need to go to modern driving license and leave the 100 years old rules... That's what you need...

t_coffee: can you please tell me how you get use to it when people even hold their child in hand in passenger seats? Tell who will be the first victim in case of accident and who will be the first person to blame?

wait for a couple of weeks more and you'll get used to it.

Learn defensive driving. I always give way to other drivers who are bent on gong to hell, why delay them.

I suggest you to go and drive other countries and then come back and make comments... I can see that the place you’ve come from is quite similar to this place and that is why it is acceptable by you...

BTW, I came from highest standard driving country that you could imagine....

Get used to it, is the wrong answer... this mean same old story and continue to live in uncivilised world...

The correct answer is though>>.... CHANGE YOU HABITS and learn how to drive...
