No wonder the tragedies happening in Qatar and the rate is high. In fact, the purpose of this room's discussion is all about the safety and standards.
There is evident that 2-second rule reduced the risk of accidents dramatically. This is compulsory in Britain and as a result almost all derivers get uses to follow it and make our roads much safer.
Keeping distance is one of the basic and in the same token most important rule which all drivers MUST consider when they are behind the wheel. Unfortunately, drivers in Doha are not obeying this...
i kept at least two car away from the car in front on me, 80, approximately 3-cars away and more than a 100 kph, I stayed not nearer than 5 cars away or more.
Do you think it will be in layman's term to explain the 2-second rule. Even in the link given by TCOM, the explanation given was way too hard to be understood unless they have given a sample computation, say with a given speed!
Yes, I am already getting old but safety in driving is a priority to me. I won't risk myself and my love ones life BUT of course, you can not control the other party/ies.
One maybe very safe in driving but the cars are not, it will be the same risk!
Qatar was hit by a series of road accident tragedies the past two weeks resulting in the death of 18 locals . The controversy of the death of four Qatari women last Friday & HMC delayed response by its ambulance team to save the victims has caused both anger & resentment from the local public demanding that local authorities take tougher actions to curb road accidents
knows this rule! When did this rule of thumb surfaced?
And I doubt if it had ever a positive result for fast driving. MAybe they should update this 2-second rule as I viewed it insufficient. A 2-second reaction time is for me is not enough!
Basically this rule is allowing driver good and enough timing to react in case of any sudden breaks occur by the vehicle in the front.
Obviously, this is also binding with the keeping enough distance.
Flor, it is a very useful rule which reduce the risk of accident. I guarantee that most of the drivers in Qatar never heard of this rule and that is why I mentioned before: “Who gave them the DL..."
In standard Highway Code it is defined as a 2-seconds rule...
The two-second rule is a rule by which a driver may maintain a safe following distance at any speed. The rule is that a driver should ideally stay at least two seconds behind any vehicle that is directly in front of the driver's vehicle.
The practice has been shown to dramatically reduce risk of collision, and also the severity of an accident should an accident occur.
This is one of standards we were talking about earlier on.
Q: Is this rule are practised in here. How many drivers are actually have a clue of meaning of this?
Now that i have to agree with,,, happy new year all ,, bring it al on,,,, Oh for something different this year im going back to the Philippines to see if i am wrong about pinos,,, i dought it but i just want to know.. look out Manilla, cebu and palawan,,, I wil keep you updated Flor1212
A K A, it is amazing that still some societies are not following the rules. In fact, they need to be more educated to help them to understand the rules in more depth. In my opinion, firstly, societies need to obey the rules under some sort of international standards and then other form and shapes will follow automatically.
In terms of driving in here, people are still struggling in first step to digest and grasp the basic rules, until then, we can open the next chapter and talk about rules...
Please remember, most of the driving rules are based on human logics and common senses. Without having those logics then roads will be a dangerous...
Cheers mnabbster, that's the fact mate. This is rule in this part of the world... Some people like flor still can't get it... lol

Flor, just search for and see the standard of UK. We don’t need to take a test like you 100 times and still have no sense of driving...lol
And yes mate, we are in civilised world not like KSA, China or Pilipino, etc, we have a computerised test and it is very difficult not only pass the test but also getting a visa to come to UK to do it. In fact, you need to pass your skills tests to even get a visa to come to UK which you don’t have obviously.
I would suggest you to go and read more about these before open your BIG mouth.....
You would never ever get to come here, forget about passing the high standard test.... We are simply Brits and grasp it mate... you are a way behind like you “home country”.
Also FYI, I have more than 20 year, ooopppps, more than 20 year, lol, DL and passed the difficult test. BTW who were the driving instructors in KSA and Qatar??? hmm let me guess: "Friends and Family Scheme" which always put people like you in the back of the queue... lol
from a meet-up with many of my QL friends. And I tell you, some of these guys and gals have many times differs also with my opinions and yet, we remain friends. Because they are real people and HUMBLE people!
on QL gatherings, OK. Now if the time comes that we meet, that would be a privilege for you. I seldom meet DRUNKARDS, arrogant drunkards! Nothing good will benefit me but for sure, you'll learn a lot from me. Ask those who knew me!
of sarcastic anonymous, now if you have not digested my posting, well what could I expect from someone like you. The OP was an arrogant person saying UK driving standard is the best since they are not allowed to take the driving test here.
I bet if they will be asked to, in 10, how many do you think will pass?
DD, I have a KSA, Qatar, China and of course my home town driving for 30 years, ooooppppps, I mean 29 years.
In KSA, I pass the driving test without going to driving school. China, very strict so I took a 100-item computer questioning which one should get 90 out of 100. Computer stop if you hit the 90. Computer stop at item 93 (meaning I made 3 mistake). Then took the actual driving and passed. Qatar, I did a 3-hour refresher practice (just to familiarize the driving test I will encounter) and took a direct exam and passed it also.
Philippines, honestly, after passing the medical, I just got my license! It is still with me after 29 years (Almost 30).
Need I say more? In 10 persons, how many Brits will pass the pocket parking? 10 out 10? Just wish?
You should have a default reply that says don't "Rant". I am dying to actually know who on earth you could be..
My guess: a 5"2 pinoy, who smells like an old lady with a lot of Bird pets, who also smiles even when being slapped and says thank you when being spat on? lmao
Do you go to QL meetings? Dude, don't get your hopes up but I wanna see you! lol I think i would fall down and start laughing and make a scene..
MC (flor), Thank you for every reply you make.. without you, this site would never be the same.. you are the JOKE of QL looooooooooooool
I did not realise people were this amazingly thick. Let me explain something. NOT ALL RULES ARE WRITTEN!! Alot of what passes in society, wherever you are, are unwritten. thee are commonly called societies norms and when people question/challenge these, chaos ensures. Yes CHANGE does happen but only after CHAOS??. NO! there are better ways to get change. Ask any long termer here (longer than, lets say 5 years) the LAW changes that have happened that have impacted on society. An example. Smoking inside shopping malls (smoking kills more than driving , so work with me) has lessened amazingly compared to 5 years ago without people going off the deep end. I personally like driving here, and yes I am a woman. You know what to expect, people are more on the offensive thus easier to read and if you drive in a similar fashion, ie, following society's UNWRITTEN rules, you are fine! Work WITH what is there!! Much easier
wow, surinder, you've listened once in your life and changed your profile's picture..!!! BUT you've chosen the worst one this time.. loool ... where is your common sense?
Other guys,
More Qatar’s horror driving stories are welcome...
Holding the child at the front seat is the craziest thing to do... Where is the common sense??!!!
Another Tip: Keeping the distance from the vehicle in front is preventing the sudden collusions and gives enough time to react...
In Doha: once drivers see the gaps, they immediately will jump in the middle. Then you keep another distance from it and guess what, another car appears in the middle and this goes on 'n' on 'n' on...
It seems that some people are still do not grasp the point ( Surinder and perhaps his friend s_Isale, surprisingly both from Indian standards..lol). It is obvious that accident may occur everywhere in the world but you should look at the statistics not individual incidents...
Qatar's driving is simply sucks and if some ppl wants to close their eyes and put their head in the sand then other will laugh at them...
Driving in here is a circus and there is no rules at all..
Acadian: I agree with you. It seems that this part of the world is still 100 years behind. Here Police cars are in roundabouts and drivers clearly breaking the rules in front of them, guess what is their reactions, PLAYING WITH BLACKBERRY.. YOHOOOOO
Tracy: I've had similar situation and believe me if these ppl can drive tank, they will drive over you..lol
I think sometimes just keep your standard within yourseld and do not let others to bring it down.
Tip: improvement only can be achievable if you listen and learn from others...
You can wear a police uniform, and the driver in the car next to you won't even bother to stop using his mobile phone! They just don't care, and they have no sense for danger. They are innocent children. Even if you (try to) prove to them that they just violated a traffic law, they will say, no, I didn't know it was meant for me.
A 19-year-old pickup truck driver involved in a deadly highway pileup in Missouri last year sent or received 11 texts in the 11 minutes immediately before the accident, federal investigators said Tuesday.
The driver sent six texts and received five texts, with the last text just before his pickup traveling at 55 mph crashed into the back of a tractor truck, beginning a chain collision. The pickup was rear-ended by a school bus, which in turn was rammed by a second school bus.
It is all relative. As I said, my own personal experience is that it's not too bad. Yes, it can and should be improved, but I do believe that we go a bit over the top with our rants.
I know a young lady who lost her hand in a driving accident here one other killed and one badly injured.
The above comments to the question seem to think its acceptable to drive badly having no regard for rules or other drivers on the road. Just because other areas of the world drive badly is that a good enough reason for it here?
Yesterday while out for the umpteenth time a driver cut across the round about not bothering to look at the road at all & almost going straight into the side of our car. Fortunately for me my husband is an excellent driver and managed to avoid the idiot.
I was in Dubai recently and they seem to manage, mirror single manoeuvres just fine!
If you think driving is bad in Qatar, try driving in Saudi Arabia and I guaranty you will not complain about the driving here. In Doha at least there are traffic cameras to deter them. In Saudi Arabia you only have the merci of God and believe me. You will start praying every time you get in a vehicle. So buckle up and suck it in
averagely, if you have been driving here for a long period, you will just ignore these things. Time will come that yes, you'll get upset, but what to do, you can't change their attitude, if you confront them, it will just be trouble.
Best to do if you can't help is SHOUT and RANT and WHINE inside your car, BUT NEVER open the window. So you released the stressed and be back to normal.
Just be a defensive driver and at all times be patient, specially with the locals who are as crazy drivers as Indians and Pakistanis. Basically just be focused on your driving and you'll be safe in the streets of Qatar.
If they flash their lights, or honk at you, give way. Maybe they have a date with Death. Or you can let 'em have a taste of their own medicine (excluding the locals). Flash 'em, honk 'em you can even engage in a staring contest with 'em. Lol.
Drivin & same time In BB shit, then comes to your track till you HOnk the HOrn, then keeps the eyes of the Black berry & like wat the H''k did i do, ok never Mind, then starts BB while drvin, second time he kils & hurts innocent straight driving persons. both goes to AL RUMAILAh. I witnessed.
Whenever you learn to how to get off the car shown on the picture of your profile and get a driving license from the civilised countries, if you manage to get visa of course and afford it. Then i wouldn’t waste my time to teach you the ABC of the driving....
BTW, Surinder, for your information:
UK is one of the only countries that Qatar accepts their standards without taking driving tests... I bet you have taken the test, if didn’t get through family and friend scheme...lol
So you can see which standard I am coming from.. in Qatar there is no need to test me..looool
Cassocck: thanks for that. I know that it is waste of time to argue with people who are driving like maniacs and supporting the maniacs.
The question is not about the rush, it is about obeying the basic rules, such as signalling, prioritising the way in roundabout, safety for the passengers, especially for children, politeness for others, changing corrects lanes, and so on.
Tips: when you are behind the wheel, vehicle is turn to the speedy missile that can kill instantly. This is too much for them to understand. Thanks god that I gained my driving license from one of the best in the world and understand that reality of it.
Cassocck: I know, flashing light in other countries is rude and selfishness but in this country is normal..lol.. If I keep changing my lane every time they want then the driving will be like: "Tom and Jerry"... don’t you think so ?lool
I don’t think I will become one of them; I rather keep my standard with myself and progress every year not like them that still are behind....
Surinder: The driving standards you are suggesting and supporting are for riding or I should say on the picture on your profile not for modern driving...
some uncommon reality. As they always say, mind your own business. It is not supporting them for their wrong or rude behavior, but getting away from trouble. Here, many time proven, whether you're right or wrong, you'll remain "left".
I've been driving here long enough and know how to drive, thanks very much.. But still don't get the rudeness of the ppl who are driving and more importantly the people like you who are supporting them,,,
Now this shocking that you accept the rules of 100 years ago... I think you need to go to modern driving license and leave the 100 years old rules... That's what you need...
t_coffee: can you please tell me how you get use to it when people even hold their child in hand in passenger seats? Tell who will be the first victim in case of accident and who will be the first person to blame?
I suggest you to go and drive other countries and then come back and make comments... I can see that the place you’ve come from is quite similar to this place and that is why it is acceptable by you...
BTW, I came from highest standard driving country that you could imagine....
No..... I am pissed off with the stupid drivers who do not even know the rules of driving and more importantly the politeness of the driving culture....

i kept at least two car away from the car in front on me, 80, approximately 3-cars away and more than a 100 kph, I stayed not nearer than 5 cars away or more.

I wonder why it was not taught in our Highway Engineering subject. And honestly, first time I heard about it!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-second_rule
I have never heard of that two-seconds rule? "Stay behind two seconds..."? What is that?
In standard Highway Code it is defined as a 2-seconds rule...
The two-second rule is a rule by which a driver may maintain a safe following distance at any speed. The rule is that a driver should ideally stay at least two seconds behind any vehicle that is directly in front of the driver's vehicle.
The practice has been shown to dramatically reduce risk of collision, and also the severity of an accident should an accident occur.
This is one of standards we were talking about earlier on.
Q: Is this rule are practised in here. How many drivers are actually have a clue of meaning of this?
since this is part of our Highway Engineering subject. And not only "plain" distance but, "safe" distance.

it is same mate.... improve your english flor... read books and newspaper..
Surinder, your driving standard is online now.. take a look:
They should do a brain test on you! Lolz!
Remember; BRITISH are not required to do any test anywhere in the world.. but you need (friends and family scheme)...lol

In Doha: once drivers see the gaps, they immediately will jump in the middle. Then you keep another distance from it and guess what, another car appears in the middle and this goes on 'n' on 'n' on...
since even a small touch here requires a police report to get repaired, you will find statistics to be high....
Let's meet to discuss this further. I'll be in my Pink KIA, wearing a pink carnation and parked at the Oryx Roundabout ...
doesn't mean your standard is good. It's a political incentive. So stop your rants!
well better thatn you that maybe your boyfriend may calm you down.... loooooooooooooooooooooooool
Even if you (try to) prove to them that they just violated a traffic law, they will say, no, I didn't know it was meant for me.
this was not in Qatar.
http://news.yahoo.com/driver-sent-got-11-texts-11-min-crash-151619850.html
A 19-year-old pickup truck driver involved in a deadly highway pileup in Missouri last year sent or received 11 texts in the 11 minutes immediately before the accident, federal investigators said Tuesday.
The driver sent six texts and received five texts, with the last text just before his pickup traveling at 55 mph crashed into the back of a tractor truck, beginning a chain collision. The pickup was rear-ended by a school bus, which in turn was rammed by a second school bus.
brit, supersized egos probably?
It is all relative. As I said, my own personal experience is that it's not too bad. Yes, it can and should be improved, but I do believe that we go a bit over the top with our rants.
why not just open a new thread purely for ranting?
Lol.
Having driven in many countries, I haven't had any real problems with driving or drivers in Qatar - apart from when DaRuDe gave me a lift. :o(
Am I a minority ?
haha, everybody that lives under the sun in Qatar automatically gets a licence.
Let them kill themselves so they learn it the hard way.
Buy yourself a safe four wheel drive and be alert at all times.
So you better keep it quite!
Just1st; I am in same boat as you, my wife always calm me down otherwise things will go very wrong....
They got driving License through friends and family.lol
Mariecor: Please drive in UK then you will see the differences. driving in Rome is not as bad as here.. trust me....
btw, it is not only locals, other nationalities specially from Asia are the worse one too....
try makkah or jeddah or even chennai or mumbai..then u'll know whts up esse!
cheez..these newbies....!!!
no question their, the locals are just crazy,, its al ME
oh my oh my.....
Drive in Rome & Manila and let me know your comment after.
whenever I go to drive my Car I feel that im on hell's road good thing I always extend my patience and my wife beside me remind me to always calm.
I have an impression that most of them got their license in easy way reason why they are not educated in some basic rules on the road.
bla bla bla
Surinder: Are you from India by any chance?
How is driving standards in your home town? There was on news the way they are driving there? Everyone knows that..
Obviously, if that's the case, driving in Qatar is the heaven for you and better standard....
of course not...because they are from different planet...lol
Cassocck: thanks for that. I know that it is waste of time to argue with people who are driving like maniacs and supporting the maniacs.
The question is not about the rush, it is about obeying the basic rules, such as signalling, prioritising the way in roundabout, safety for the passengers, especially for children, politeness for others, changing corrects lanes, and so on.
Tips: when you are behind the wheel, vehicle is turn to the speedy missile that can kill instantly. This is too much for them to understand. Thanks god that I gained my driving license from one of the best in the world and understand that reality of it.
is that one you went? and got that picture from them?
check the other one!
This is year 2011 for god's sake....
Tell who will be the first victim in case of accident and who will be the first person to blame?
wait for a couple of weeks more and you'll get used to it.
Learn defensive driving. I always give way to other drivers who are bent on gong to hell, why delay them.
BTW, surinder, please correct your English before posting.. I think that is poor not my driving..loool
Well you never seen others rules and that's why you don't ever get it.... that's understandable... another one...looooool
Accidents are everywhere, but the driving standrads are high and the risks are low
looooooooooooo... the place we get driving license, you would never ever get that in million years, if you accept this rules...
That's tickling me....
Surinder, did you buy your driving license?
no accidents & idiot riders at all ?
is that the place where people get car jacked?
I suggest you to go and drive other countries and then come back and make comments... I can see that the place you’ve come from is quite similar to this place and that is why it is acceptable by you...
BTW, I came from highest standard driving country that you could imagine....
Get used to it, is the wrong answer... this mean same old story and continue to live in uncivilised world...
The correct answer is though>>.... CHANGE YOU HABITS and learn how to drive...
surinder when was the mk highway accident?
is what gets them permit not their skills.
No..... I am pissed off with the stupid drivers who do not even know the rules of driving and more importantly the politeness of the driving culture....
already posted umpteen times.
