Will these be in Doha soon?

A new law has come into force in France making it compulsory for drivers to carry a breathalyser kit in their vehicles or risk an on-the-spot fine.

It is the latest move by the government aimed at bringing down the number of road deaths caused by alcohol. Foreign drivers are included in the new rule, however there is a grace period until November.

The French government hopes that with breathalysers in every car, drivers who suspect they may be over the limit can test themselves and if necessary refrain from taking the wheel."

This applies to tourists also, so be warned.

As I also said earlier, anyone could blow into them.

One key problem here is that these devices can be unreliable.

For instance, you may leave the pub after a pint or two. Test shows negative, but it takes 20-20 minutes for the alcohol to take effect and the level rise in your blood stream..

Haven't read of them for motorbikes, only for cars. I am not convinced they could work that well as anyone could be asked to blow into them, one of the passengers, a passing pedestrian......literally anyone.

dweller: in that TV series they show that the police has installed this device on some specific motorbikes and it won't start unless the rider passes the breath test successfully

Not very practical, but its the law now. You have to carry these so that "you can test yourself"..

What happens if I leave the bar, test myself and am negative. I drive off and get pulled over and get fined for not carrying a kit :O(

I don't watch much TV and certainly not scrubs. I read that on one of the the BBC pages I think.

There is already a device in the UK where drivers can test themselves for alcohol levels, a device developed I believe by an ex resident of Qatar.

I have a completely different approach, seriously .

Release few dozen of 'stray dogs' , they can very easily identify if a person is sober or drunk by their typical swaying 'gait'.

Drunkards themselevs need to decide [ drive or not ] after analysing the way they are barked at ..... !!

I heard they [ Govt Authorities ] keep 'vans parked near 'places of drinking'[ bars ] so when drunkards just step out they put them into vans 'respectfully' & drive them to their 'place of sleeping' [ homes ] ...

I believe that a device is currently being developed which will require a driver to blow into it and if he is "over" an established alcohol limit, the car will not start.

That device of course assumes that it will be the driver blowing into it.

maybe they will invent a system to link between the breathalyser and an external light outside every vehicle (similar to the taxi light) which shows the status of driver (drunk / awake) :)
