I would like to learn paddling or rowing here in Qatar. Is there a rowing association which I can contact to register or know the details to be able to join? Please help. I really would like to go into sports starting this year.

Hi there,

I just saw your discussion thread this evening. If there's still any discussion about rowing, please include me. I used to compete and coach when I still lived in Canada. I started at university in 1998 and competed/coached community and masters level crews until I moved to the Middle East in 2003. I haven't been able to so much as stick my toe in a boat (sweep or scull) since then and I've been dying to get back on the water and start again. I would love to be able to help out with getting something started, and ultimately get in a boat regularly and row until my legs fell off.

Regards,

Reid McLeod

Hi! Just wondering if your plan had pushed through???

It'd be great if rowing can be a regular activity like every end of the week. Rower din ako nung college with Aqua Fortis(UST)yr2002

Actually, i really don't have any idea. Maybe someone can suggest a nice place where we can meet. Maybe, next Friday afternoon? (when everybody doesn't have work).

All you need to do is pay the annual subscription for membership.

Most of members there are not locals. In fact, very rare when I see locals there to begin with.

I don't get your "local" and sponsor" comments.

so when do you guys want to have this meeting? someone should set a date.. over lunch/dinner/coffee?

yes, i tried already. but they just accept locals. unless we find a sheikh or a company who's willing to sponsor this club...i assure everyone it will be a big hit here in Qatar.

Have you tried contacting the Sailing Club in Doha? It's near the Marriott Hotel.

Try your luck.

It depends on the schedule. But the question is: who are really willing to join?

Thats a great idea. Where? when?

All who are interested to put up this club, maybe, we can meet one day and plan. It will not be easy but at least, we can try our best to find out how we can start the sport (even try to find sponsors to fund the club). It's better than not to do anything at all. Or, the least, we can try to work out as a team and if we are lucky enough to find a sponsor, we're already pretty much in condition to compete again.

yah i know. i called them this morning. maybe anybody knows if we can put up a rowing club and what would be the requirements. or we can find a person who can help us put up a club. it's worth the try.

i've called that number a couple months back and was disappointed with their reply. apparently, they're only accepting locals in the club as of now. thought they're rowing by west bay but i think they're doing sculling near oasis. you guys might want to inquire again though.

well, it's quite a small world. I paddled from 1997-2002 and I stopped. I really hope I can continue paddling or learn rowing. Hope to hear from someone with the same hobby. If you hear anything about rowing here, just keep me posted.

My sister graduated from UP Diliman and was also in a Rowing Team but not sure if it's the UPDRT. She graduated in 1989, MassCom. She stayed in ilang-ilang Dormitory for all i remember :)

It was a long way back since I paddled. But few of my team mates are also here in Qatar. We were part of the UPDRT. I know also one from Pyros who's working here.

Nice. Do you have group in the Philippines? I used to be a member of PYROS or Philippine Youth Rowing Society and De La Salle Rowing Team. I was with my Brother. My sister's from PDRC - Philippine Dragonboat Rowing Crew. whats yours?
