Be careful when hiring illegal maids ....

An apparently wealthy Asian family in Dubai advertised online for a housemaid and a few days later, they hired one without evening asking where she had come from.

A week later, they paid the price when the Asian maid drugged them with the help of an accomplice and emptied their house of all jewellery and electronic items.

Police later arrested the maid and her partner, but also blamed the employers for failing to enquire about the maid and whether she is staying legally in the UAE.

“They gave her a job without enquiring about her legal status in the UAE. They did not ask for her ID and just had her first name which turned out to be a fake,” said Major General Khalil Al Mansoori, director of Dubai’s CID.

“I again call on all residents not to hire maids without checking their status and ID.

“I am surprised that some residents, mainly wealthy people, recruit such persons just because they accept lower wages and can be easily recruited.”

CID officials said the Asian employer, his wife and 10-year-old daughter were having tea at night when they fell fast asleep.

When they woke up on the next day, they were shocked to find that all their valuable electronic items and jewelry have gone along with the 35-year-old maid.

Extensive investigation later led the police to know that the fleeing housemaid had moved to work for another family.

“The new family was simply another victim,” said Lt Colonel Saeed Al Ayali, criminal investigation chief at the CID.

..for the way they are treated, abused and locked up out here you people should be thankful that this maids are even willing to work with such employers in the first place. Calling them illegal, runaways, etc is just part of the mindset to make them look bad. Most of your status would be the same "illegal and runaways" if you were working in the condition they find themselves in

The kids were left unattended and the maid run away.

Yup--hiring illegal maids is not justified and should be discouraged.

Brit.. I have heard similar stories here also...still people dont learn lesson..

Its not about money or wealth... when they have small kids and working parents... they need some domestic help/nanny at home...there are legal ways to hire one.. getting illegal maids can never be justified..

requires a lot of hectic procedure and approvals. Many families are in desperate need of maids/nanny and this lead to a desperate action which offcourse backfire many times.

Runaway and illegal maids is big business in Doha. They earn more via other means too. Few maids are being used by the agents to lure maids to escape for better perks and life. Unfortunately they fall an easy prey.

'Doha: The Search and Follow up Department (SFD) busted six gangs involved in trafficking and employing workers staying in the country illegally from the houses accommodated them in different areas of the country. workers,....

A similar case happened to a colleague in Saudi. A former driver of his company contacted him and explained that he was out of work and desperate.

He took him on as a part time family driver and helper. Two weeks later, the family returned home to find the place cleaned out.

Ofcourse the police blamed him for hiring an illegal..

So be wary of doing what you think might be a good deed..

How can people be so stupid? how could they let someone live in their house without knowing their visa status? Out of desperation sometimes people stop thinking logically...
