Dohaland

Doha Land Website
Dohaland, a Qatar Foundation subsidiary, has launched its signature project, “Heart of Doha”, a QR20bn multi-purpose development aimed at “recreating an important locality” in the city.
The landmark project, which will come up in 35 hectares within Mohamed Bin Jassim District in central Doha, is to be implemented in five phases before 2016. The first phase will be launched in September, Dohaland vice-chairman Dr Abdullah al-Kubaisi said yesterday.
Mohamed Bin Jassim District is bordered by Al Rayyan Road to the north, Jassim Bin Mohamed Street (east), Musheireb Street (south) and Al Diwan Street (part of A Ring Road–west).
Besides housing units, the Heart of Doha project will comprise a theatre auditorium, three types of hotels, a primary school, a heritage quarter, modern civic amenities and infrastructure facilities.
Dohaland, in a statement, said the project would “redefine architecture and urban planning”. It will be a blend of traditional Qatari and modern technology.
“The very idea behind the project is to bring people back to their roots. Until the 1950s, Qataris used to live in the heart of the city, where the new development is now taking place. With the city centre emerging as a trade hub, Qataris started moving elsewhere, mostly to city suburbs,” al-Kubaisi said.
The masterplan drawn up by Dohaland shows there will be 226 buildings between three and 30-storey high. On completion, Heart of Doha will be able to accommodate a population of more than 27,000.
The theatre auditorium can accommodate 700 people.
Three types of hotels, lifestyle, luxury and business, will come up at the Heart of Doha.
The proposed modern amenities include centralised district cooling, gas network, vacuum waste disposal system, a dedicated cycle-way and centralised security.
A tramway to move residents and visitors has also been planned. Connectivity to Souq Wakif is under study.

Doha Land..... LOL! Return to roots? Qatari identity? ROFL!!! So, they want to destroy the true old town and build a fake new "old" town and call it Disney Land?? .... errrr sorry Doha Land? All this while the true old Doha heritage areas like Najma have potholed roads and overflowing sewage? Get your priorities right you clowns.

Well I for one hope such a place will only be for locals. Havent we invaded their country enough? They should atleast have a place they can call their own and see their own kind. I miss those traditional dances with the swords they used to do on the corniche back in the days :)

Good Fortune always comes knocking at your door...when you are sh*tting in the toilet!! :)

The development is called Doha Land.

The site was chosen because it was the heart of old Doha’s old town.

The style of architecture was chosen because it was reminiscent of Qatari heritage.

Why assume for a second that they are trying to embrace a multi-cultural atmosphere?

The very purpose of this development IS to foster a them & us identity amongst Qataris.

That's the point. You'll find any number of quotes saying that Sheikha Mozah was inspired to develop the project because Doha was losing it's Qatari identity and was starting to look like any other city in the world.

Translation - Doha was looking too multicultural and was no longer obviously, visibly Qatari, and she didn't like this. Her solution - create a little mini Doha for Qataris.

I get the point. I just think it's very sad.

Way to embrace the rich multi-cultural community that's present in Doha! Nothing like exclusive areas to promote the Us and Them stereotype that's already prevalent here.

This is from the Peninsula today:

He said the residential and commercial properties in Heart of Doha will be available for lease for nationals as well as expatriates.

****However, there will be some exclusive areas for nationals.****

I thought I'd read something somewhere about how Dohaland will be for Qatari residents to live in a Qatari community and return to Qatari values or something. I wonder if it will be open to the public, or a gated community??

Why do you assume it's just for the locals?

Any area that allows you to walk around the city is good in my eyes. It's something Doha severely lacks.
