Doha Players - 9 Parts of Desire
Went with my one of usual art-culture buddy Crescent to watch this show. Unlike Doha Players that usually entertaining for the family, this time they presents more serious play.
The Author of this play is Heather Raffo, the original performance was one woman show done by her. But this time being interpret by Katherine Spry and her casts.
The setting is not in theatre, it was in Atrium of Carnegie Mellon University new building (I am impressed with the new building, how I wish I go back to my university days again).
The play consist of 7 women monologue in various background. I am not used to watching this type of play, a bit confusing for me. What I can gather there were an Iraqi doctor who studies in England and back to Iraq and serving the people there, an Iraqi painter that in the end being killed by a bomb, an Iraqi mother who lost all her families talking from the bomb shelter, an iraqi women talking from a flat in London, an iraqi women talking from a flat in New York, an old Iraqi woman who selling stuffs in the market, an Iraqi woman talking from a private home in Bagdhad.

You need to listen really carefully to the monologue ... the actress were really good and the setting was really well created that during the play I felt that I am in there (mostly Baghdad).
The play was tought provoking, making you realize and appreciate the place you living now (Qatar) is a peaceful place without war.
wow her performance were breath taking bravo!!!!!!
Again I appreciated Doha Players. It was a very touching story and play. I was really impressed by the performances. And although there was no intermission and we were sitting on extremely comfortable sofas (on which we could easily fall asleep), I could watch the whole play without any loss of concentration. But I also missed some of the painters words and couldnt see her either. The setting of the lady painter was not very well adjusted.
So far I have only heard great reviews. It sounds so interesting.. unfortunately I missed it due to other commitments.. but Go Mrs Milne!!
good to see the author performing, it must have been quite a performance, I couldn't imagine how one woman could have done all parts!
This is picture is obviously NOT me, I don't smoke..
fresh start, I have a hard time trying to hear what the 'Iraqi Lady Painter' said ... and my neck hurt for turning around to see on the top stage.
It was a very thought provoking piece with some graphic (and disturbing) imagery - but that's what war creates after all.
Like you Novita, I found the atrium where there play was staged very impressive, but the acoustics are very poor, so you really need to concentrate at times and still unfortunately I missed some of the dialogue.
This was the first Doha Players production we have been too, but I would certainly go to more! I found the performance of Heather P very powerful in both of her roles. I think there is another chance for people to see it today.
