I believe that should Qatar host the Games, they will be held in either April or October 2016.

Although Athens didn't have the infrastructure (I suppose you're referring to additional public works, sports venues and partecipants' accommodation), it completed ALL the required infrastucure works on time, even though I know 1 case where quality of works was compromised due to delays.

Qatar can have the infrastructure on time, and certainly has the money and the unbuilt land to develop. Also, it is likely that Qatar can make use of the Olympic-sized venues by giving them to the respective national federations and financially support their maintenance.

I just hope that Doha will not make the same mistake as Athens, that more landscaping should have been made along and adjacent to the new infrastructure works.

I think some justification for holding it here is that the Olympics have never been held in the Middle East before.

Money is not the issue. Plenty of that.

It's a bold and ambitious idea by Qatar, and I for one commend them and am fully behind them.

The Asian Games prepared Qatar very well for an event such as the Olympic Games. They learned a lot of do's and don'ts especially about spending money, the promises which weren't kept.

Why would people not be interested in Qatar, by the time 2016 comes it will have more to offer, the heat should not be an issue for the Asian games and if they have them in June it is lready Summer.

Prior to Asian Olympic Games, we were worried and not confident about the success of the event.

It turned out to be a success.

For those who support Qatar Bid, visit the website and register there.

Those who are not confident, we cannot help it.

Personally, I won't attend the games if they were hosted here. By that time I would be retired and kicked out.

Cheers

Gotta give credit to their can do approach. I agree - they would need to some serious prep work before they get ready. But I am all for it!

Yeah, there's no question that the hosting the Olympics is no longer in anyway profitable. The competative nature of the bidding process means that governments promise things that they can't really afford. The Qatari enonomy is therefore perfectly suited to this: there is no public accountability for the government's budgets, freeing it to create as many white elephants as it wants, and of course such massive revenues from gas etc means it has the capital surplus to dedicate to projects which will generate next to no revenue.

There can be little justification for hosting it here really. Even if the population of Qatar trebled by that point you'll still get next to no attendances in comparison with hosting it somewhere else. It's too hot and Qataris outside the government don't seem particularly interested. Can we in anyway imagine thousands of people flocking to Qatar for such an event in the same way that they did for Sydney or Athens? Why on earth would they?

But of course let me emphasise that I am totally behind Qatar's bid: the Asian Games amply demonstrated that the country can more than sucessfully host major sporting events and I have every faith that the government and Olympic Committee can put together a winning bid.

Morning to u all,

And second...i m pretty sure that Qatar can host the Games of the magnitude of the Olympics...and second somebody pointed out that u cant have it in Aug cos ppl cant run in the heat...r we missing the point this is the SUMMER OLYMPICS...

Asian Games went without a flaw in anything, organizing, roads, traffic handling, infrastructure, accomodation, TV & Broadcasting...so i m sure double that size can also be handled by Qatar...it has the money to do anythin...thats the point...

And by 2016, we wud have a lot in this country ranging from apts, to hotels and bridges, roads, and ofcourse the big thing...The New Doha International Airport...so why worry...

GO QATAR!!!!

But lets be realistic for a second....everyone who thinks they would have gotten it had they not been the founders of the Olympic games raise your hands! =)

Stay safe all.

greece didn't have the infrastructure or the money... they are still way in debt... didn't stop them hosting.

but if it is possible that Olympics are held in April - early May, or late October, then I'd like Qatar to be the host city, and not any of the other cities that were announced (Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Prague, Chicago, Madrid, Baku).

I was not trying to compare which place is better....and age has nothing to with it....Beirut for example is a heck of a lot older than Montreal....but again no comparison if you talk about traffic patterns.

What I was saying is that Qatar could (in 9 years time) have the infrastructure to host the games (as you pointed out in an earlier post)...but it does not have it yet.

That's all....stay safe all.

last asian games there was so much talk about tourist coming n there was a general fear that Doha roads will be chocked to death with traffic where were they during the games there was no traffic as soon as the games were over we got traffic congestion. did not see much tourist either

You are entitled to your opinion and I am a believer things will get better.

Don't compare Montreal with Qatar there is nothing there to compare.

The Qataris have build this (COUNTRY) over the last 30 years, Montreal has been building its (CITY) for a couple of hundred years.

Qatar has the infrastructire to host the Olympic Games???

It doesn't even have the infrastructure to properly direct traffic in a city under a million people. Case in point: Montreal - The city is the size of the whole country and has 3 million people and the traffic is less than half of that in Qatar.

I'm not being negative....9 years time is enough to get Qatar ready to host them if they win...but to say they have the infrastructure now is not accurate....after all, it takes more than just stadiums to host the games...Qatar would not be able to handle the amount of tourists the games would draw!

Still, a part of me is hoping they can win the rights to host. Good luck to Qatar!

Stay safe all.

Qatar already has a ton of workers preparing The Pearl and roads, and buildings...I don't think it's ready to hold the Olympics. Where would everyone stay? Are there really enough hotels? And just think of how many more people they would have to get to build the sites for some of the games. Seems like a lot of work to add to the already full plate.

Good Morning,

I think it would be a great advantage and a great chance for people to get to know and understand this part of the world. Qatar already has an infrastructure to support these games and in any case it nine years away.

I will in anycase support Qatar.

Thanks KH for posting the link. On the website you can register your support for the bid. If Qatar were to host it would not be slap bang in the middle of summer. According to the rules of the IOC, Olympic Games can be held during several months each side of the summer also.

Yallah Qatar!

I think the biggest disadvantage of Doha in August (when the modern Olympics are usually held) is the weather. It would be very tough for the marathon runners!

Very real chance I think. Remember the International Olympic Committee work along very similar lines to the Qatari government, if you get my drift.
