Do you believe in Past life/rebirth?

By Formatted Soul •
I read this book 'Many lives Many masters' and it has got my mind going crazy. it talks about how when you die you keep being reborn into new lives until you have learned everything that you need to. could you imagine if this was real? do you believe that when you die you are reborn into a new life and you make up the karma from past lives? they said that the people in your life right now more than likely were in your past lives also as different people. what do you think of all this? have you had any experience where you remember part of a past life or was hypnotized and discovered this?
thinking of "hell is full of loving fun ppl", not so scared of going there after death, lol. Or, should we say, now to make sins so that we can meet thos fun ppl?
whether it is Islam or Hinduism or Christianity or Buddhism.....they all say the same thing when you come to think of it....there is only one God....and that God does not have any shape. It is a Power.

That is certainly one way of interpreting it or may I say one of the several school of thoughts in Dharma.
I am sure if you enquire deeper and look out of the Budhist concept of "Mind", you might find alternative explanation which might help us realize that although Animals have less developed "Biological" Brain, that doesnot prohibit them being "Conscious".
Also whatever a Human Brain "petrceives" as TRUE from one point of Reference may not be TRUE from different point of reference.
This is very well proved by one philosopher named Swami Vivekananda from West Bengal, India, that Consciousness is independent of BRAIN.
Also you implied that "Nirvana" is dependent on "Brain or Mind, which as a follower of Vednata many in India may not agree.
It is mentioned at seven places in the Qur’aan that Allah (who calls Himself al-Alaa (the Most High), is above His Arsh (Throne). He is not within or among His creation in His Essence. However, He is all-Seer (as-Sameeh) and all-Hearer (al-Baseer), and Knows everything that the hearts conceal.
here is one verse
"Surely, your Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days and then Istawaa (rose over) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty), disposing the affair of all things. No intercessor (can plead with Him) except after His Leave. That is Allah, your Lord; so worship Him (Alone). Then, will you not remember?" 10:3 Holy Quran.

CONSCIOUSNESS comes from your mental capacity.
Look at animal classes as you see
how much more neurons in mind is developed more emotions are shown
a insect may show less emotion as you compare with a cat
Insect may not take care of its offspring as a cat does.
we human are little more mentally well organised than monkeys. so we show more emotions and feel wright and wrong. But dont think animals at higher stage donsnt have CONSCIOUSNESS. If love a dog he loves back.
we are not very much diffrent than animals like monkeys.
only thing they have more premitive language, emotions CONSCIOUSNESS than us.
Life is a gift given by that supreme power for nothing. enjoy as much as you want and allow other to enjoy their life. Dont think about what happens after death becouse you dont know where you were before your birth.
this is my philosophy
thanks
Thank you for that reference....but still that doesnot answer my question regarding the Concept of OMNIPRESENT.
I was trying to look into the similiarity between Dharma and Abrahamic Religions.
"I agree...but I was saying that in reply to your statement which implied that Budhism gives Human EXCLUSIVE right over Nirvana(Enlightnement) while prohibiting other living beings/consciousnesses from attaining that."
No it is not like that. Humans are the species who can develop the mindset to attain "Nirwana". The others are lack of brain power to advance their mind to the required level.

I agree...but I was saying that in reply to your statement which implied that Budhism gives Human EXCLUSIVE right over Nirvana(Enlightnement) while prohibiting other living beings/consciousnesses from attaining that.
It is narrated that Mu`aawiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami beat a slave girl belonging to him for being careless in minding his sheep. Then he regretted it, and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to express his regret and ask for his permission to set her free. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) sent someone to call the girl and asked her: "Where is Allah?" She said: "In heaven." He asked, "Who am I?" She said: "You are the Messenger of Allah." He said: "Set her free, for she is a believer." (Muslim)

Re-birth, sorry to sound rude but will tell u guys abt somethin funny we gals did in our hostel;) Well we used to invoke the spirits or call upon the dead etc watever u wanna call it... it so happened that one fine day we decided to ask the spirit we called about our past lives etc, aparently I was a Danish boy called Dani and died in an accident....oooooooh ...we were soooo scared... After a lot of soul calling(searching) and brain things we finally came to the conclusion that its plain physics and pshycological:)

good summarization of nature of God according to Islam..
One question --
Do Islam says that Allah (God) is OMNIPRESENT?
By "Abrahamic Belief System" -- I meant Judaism-Chrstianity-Islam...since they offer an "Exclusive" package which you either accept or reject.
sandtest - This is the 1st time I heard the word "Abrahamic belief system"
Ban Spoon Feeding not Me
If it is so...then I will say Budhism is no different than Abrahamic belief system.
the concept of God in Islam is presented in this Sura of the Holy Quran “Say: He is Allah, the One; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not,nor is He begotten, and there is none like unto Him.”[Al-Qur’an 112:1-4]"
the word Allah is unique it has no plural form. its singular indicating the oneness of Allah.

some good points...I agree particularly with the part that Human life is no much importnat than say a dog's life.
But, I do believe that there exists a CONSCIOUSNESS which pervades this Universe and that is different from mind-memory-living body etc.
It is because of This Consciousness that a small infant kid is able to recognise his mother although his memory-mind is not strong.
It is because of this transcendental nature of Consciouness that we see dreams in sleeping states sometimes some dreams which we never imagine while we are awake.
yes....u're right.God does not have a form.and Hinduism,like many other faiths,also preach this.That God is nothing but a power that controls everything.It has no form,no shape,nothing.and It is called Brahman.The Whole.the Supreme.It is all-pervading and omnipresent.
And as you said, humans are above all other beings only intellectually and by our body manoeuvrability, which many other animals do not possess.otherwise, life as such is one.....whether it is in a man or a dog or a plant.we don't say 'brought back to human life' or 'live human life to the fullest'....it's always only 'life' and it's a single sovereign term.

i believe that there is life after death. but re birt, i dont think so...we live life through experince and learning...we use our critical thinking and intuition in dealing with trials...
if ever there is such thing as re birth, we could live a perfect life... as we could correct the mistakes we have done in our previous life...we could be more matured and experienced in dealing our present lives...
even in our subconscious mind, we could not prove that we have in present time is most likely what we could have in the past...
as we r created in this world, everything is new and fresh...
let's live our life to the fullest as we will just pass it once....
"never allow somebody to be ur priority when u r just his/her option"
as some people here often says...heaven will be damn boring and hell will be fun with all the funloving bad people around..LOL
but I want to go to heaven to see dear ones.
In your after life, you were married to ET, you were not happy at all, ET had no sex parts.

“Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful,”
If I am not mistaken...you told that you can converse with spirits right? I really would like to know your experience.
yes Correct -- that is Mahavakya of Upanishads.
Apart from Aham Brahmasmi, there is one more called -- "Tat Tvam Asi" -- Thou Art That.
Means -- You are the One.
So no fear of God, punishment, hell, burning, lol.
Scientifically we are made of molecules of carbon water etc.. and matter cannot be distroyed. so when we die our body is decompsed in to molecules and integrates in to nature. Some time in future some other living being uses these same molecules as food and grows. As we eat now. If you think what w eat now is nothig but molecules in its complex form. which may have been in the body of some other living being some time in the past.
It looks crude way of explaing but actually for nature, human life not more or less precious than a dogs life. they both are same.
For your internal satisfaction you can have the concept of god, religion. But Nature is much more powerful than any god defined in any religion.
there is god but
there is no god as defined in religion. definetly god desnt look like human being. GOd can be defined as strength of matter and energy which takes different forms as it has taken one form called life on earth.
even lifeless rocks on earth show wonders of god.
may be on some other celestial body it can take other form.
science has discovered lot of things which human cannot see like xray, wireless communications. If god exisits as defined in religion science whould have able to figure it out.
the idea of Aham Brahmasmi.....right?"I am the Supreme"

i still feel the concept of quanta of energy being left behind after death as being the best one.and about reincarnation....well,it is said that sometimes this energy gets absorbed by somebody born with strikingly same energy levels.....but i really don't understand how memories from past lives get carried over.
i mean,i once read about this plumber in the USA who had been getting strange dreams from childhood and he when he visited a hypnotist,he went into a trance and blurted out an account in which he declared himself to be a Roman Gladiator who had died a rather gruesome death.it seems the way he narrated the account was so genuine that as the time of his 'death' neared,he started sweating and shaking all over....as though in fear.when he came out of the trance,he knew nothing and was in all ways shell-shocked when he heard the recorded session in his own voice.

"how can u learn everything there is to learn if you cant remember what u learnt in the past life? Every time your reborn your going to experience something new, and your going to learn something new. So when does this reborning process stop?"
It stops when your spirit reaches perfection.
Before incarnating on a different limbo, spirit/souls stay in some sort of a limbo, can't be measured how long it will take, maybe seconds and maybe decades or centuries before a soul/spirit reencarnates in new body, but that doesn't mean that the new body is in this planet or dimension or galaxy.

"God is Within You" --- is a Very important and fundamental concept of Advaita vednata philosophy of Hinduism.
As far as Budhism is concerned -- God is not of much importnace in raising the CONCIOUSNESS to achieve enlightenment.
In a way Budhism is Agnosticim while Hinduism doesnot treat God as seperate and Supreme than "Individual Consciousness".
I agree with Realsomeone.
The theory of reincarnation is one of the best seller novels, that humans could give to the poor people and a heck of a placebo pills to pity their misery in their life's.
“Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful,”
Many people receive hints of possible past lives that cannot be considered as definitive proof of reincarnation or of a specific past-life connection. Some come through extrasensory channels such as dreams, visions, intuitive feelings, or hypnosis. Some may come from other-dimensional sources such as psychic readings or through channeled messages from apparent disincarnate beings.
Since neither such sources nor the information from them can be accessed by independent observers, they provide only potential clues that require validation by third parties. Nevertheless, they should not be dismissed out-of-hand as they may lead to verifiable evidence to support the past-life connection.
svelte_saggi - Yes it is. "Nirvana" is the Sanskrit word. Nibbana is in English. All original books on Buddhism is in Paali & Sanskrit.
Yes No more Re-birth after Enlightenment.
Life is suffering and Enlightenment is the end for all suffering in this universe for a soul.

i read somewhere a long time ago that when we are born into this world,God gives each of us a piece of Himself.this is to see us through all the hardships in life and this is also why many preachers say "Why search elsewhere?God is within you"....and when we die, this piece is returned to the Whole once again.and it is this 'piece' that we call 'The Soul'
this is just one version of the concept, people.and i read this when i was very small....like say in my 5th grade or so.i've heard several other versions based on this later on.

vedic Sanskrit...particularly Rig-vedic sankrit later got simplified in Classical Sanskrit...and further other languages like Pali, ArdhMagadhi, Magadhi -- in Budhist tradition show this pattern of simplification of Sanskrit.

lol FS.........
Actually Re-incarnation/Re-birth, transmigration of Atman(loosely translated as soul in English) is often attributed to Hinduism...which is not totally true.
Re-incarnation is often assumed as PHYSICAL re-appearance of materialistic body, on contrary Vedanta of Hinduism as well as Budhism and Jainism do not give any importance to physical or materialistic form of so called "re-incarnation".
Moreover, the word "soul" itself is a borrowed word from Abrahamic monotheistic-dualist belief systems (Islam-Christianity-Judaism) which indicates a "seperate" entity soul, therefore people look through this prism.
While Dharmic philosophies like Vedanta of Hinduism, Budhism/Jainism and their concept of re-incarnation or Atman-Brahman relation revolves around LEVEL OF CONCIOUSNESS. In true sense it hardly gives importance to materialistic or seperate "entity" perceived as soul.
isn't 'Nibbana' the same as 'Nirvana' in Sanskrit?or in other words,Enlightenment?do please correct me if i'm wrong.....

i, for one, do believe in life after death. my belief is based upon my faith in God.

According to Buddhism:-
"when you die you keep being reborn into new lives until you have learned everything that you need to."
It is not learning everything. It is called "Nibbana". You will not re-born again when you attained Nibbana (You free your mind from all souls).
Lord Buddha is the one who 1st attained this.
"Do you believe that when you die you are reborn into a new life and you make up the karma from past lives"
This is clearly explained in the Buddhist Philosophy. You may born in to different form of life (eg. Dog, Cat...)depending on your past deeds.
"they said that the people in your life right now more than likely were in your past lives also as different people. what do you think of all this? have you had any experience where you remember"
This is true according to Buddist Philosophy.

it is said that the soul is nothing but the energy within every individual.according to the laws of physics, energy in any form can neither be created nor destroyed.it only changes from one form to another.but what about the formless energy within a living being?the body is buried/cremated/whatever.but what happens to the energy?it is that force which is left behind.it is said that at the time of death,at which this very energy is about to leave the body,it is able to view other similar energy levels....i.e.,the dying person is elevated to a level in which his/her eyes are able to see much more than others.that is why it is often heard of that people 'saw their forefathers' just before their own death.
even normal people are born with different energy levels...that is what makes psychics and mediums different from the rest of us.they are able to see things which a large percentage of us cannot.i have read and done a lot of study on this topic.... :-)

If that is true then we should ask ourselves this question...after you die where do u go? what happens to your soul, many times the mind can play tricks on you, make u see things you've heard or read before about dying. the whole bright light at the end of the tunnel thing has been scientifically explained and could be one possibility. If we knew where we were going after death we'd never be ready to die or want to die sooner to experience that. Some things are better left unknown.

i do believe
when we are about to die ..we will know it. We see our folks who had gone before us.
Not only in the book...I know personally...my dad when he was in the hospital bed..he said my grandfather is standing there and calling him...he was not fully consious at that time...and next morning he passed away.
it's a very debateable topic,i daresay.coz all those stories and real life incidents we get to hear do not allow one to totally rule out the concept of rebirth.
but i read this book called 'Moon Signs' by Linda Goodman a few years ago and she has explained the whole concept of souls, etc. in a rather wonderful way.it would not be appropriate for me to put forth what i read on a forum like QL.i suggest all those who're interested to have a look at the book themselves.

how can u learn everything there is to learn if you cant remember what u learnt in the past life? Every time your reborn your going to experience something new, and your going to learn something new. So when does this reborning process stop? I'd like to believe in life after death where the soul is free from the body. But then again is there an end to every beginning? Different people over the world from different religions believe that Death in this life is only the beginning...i say dont bother about life after death...no one knows and no one will ever know.

Now then, I'd like to beleive this one.
As matter cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed into something else. As your once living body is now in a box or gone up in smoke, then reincarnation must be of the soul.
As my ex wife called me a "souless b*stard" then I guess I've not been reincarnated before, however I've since been refered to a a "kind soul" I'd like to think it's possible for my continuance.
I'm not religious in any way, shape or form, however, if I were, I'd probably choose Buddhism for this very reason alone :o)
Did you Google it first?
I used to believe in reincarnation... but that was in a previous life.
