Disrespectfully Yours

I dress up well. I dress up local. I wear pants. I wear a skirt. I use expensive perfume. What's deodorant? I drive an old car. I love my premium brand car.

I come first, first and foremost. Who are you, what are you, why are you in my way?

I have the right of way even if it's the wrong way. I'll squeeze in on your right when there is no lane, I'll cheat and use the service roads to get ahead of you.

I'll climb the kerb and block handicapped access.

I'm so cool, I'm so much better than you.

Another car accident in my neighborhood.

Location:

In-bound going towards industrial area as you turn into the traffic lane in the old parachute roundabout.(old airport road)

Car: Head on collision, totally destroyed and mangled. White car, park on the emergency curb.

This is my fourth car that I see wreck in the road in less than 2 weeks.

I have to say, even they are not my people but we still humans inside. In less than 3 weeks in my neighborhood, I have seen three car fatalities mostly excessive speed and illegal lane crossing or failing to shield incoming traffic. This road is becoming a carnage and scares the freaking shiiattt out of me every time I head to work or go out.

One car had its whole rear push in to the front it resembling an accordion. Got hit by incoming car in the same lane, the lady fail to shield completely. She just pull in front of the other car. No one survived.

Another car using excessive speed, lost control of the vehicle and invaded the medium grounds and knock the street light at the same time it was folded like a bun in a hot dog. No survivors.

Another similar wreck, but this time it flew into the desert and flip over the car 4 times. The land cruiser was demolished. One survivor in critical condition.

My people give yourself time to head to work. I rather be late than sorry.

I thought I saw every bad driving habit here in Qatar but we were really unprepared for what we have seen last night. We were heading the airport road from City Center and nearing the Palace we saw a modestly speeding Range Rover on the rightmost lane with dome lights on. As we slowed down entering the roundabout, we saw the driver of the Range Rover was actually playing with a PSP with both hands! How stupid was that!

I saw how he didn't drop the PSP from his hand and used his elbows to manuever through the roundabout! I had to slow down and avoid being adjacent to him. Luckily he turned right on Grand Hamad.

Maybe he thought it was "cool" to play while driving but it was the most stupid thing I saw.

I told my friend he should have used his phone camera to post it here. But we missed it!

As a public service to newcomers, I thought I'd post a copy of this valuable document :

Arabian Automotive Association: Rules of the Road

[Remember, your lives are in the hands of God: Have No Fear!]

Ten Top Tips for driving in the Gulf.

1. Keep to your lane!

Landcruisers, BMWs and Mercedes may use the fast lane.

All other cars should keep to the right.

2. On entering a roundabout, remember God preserves the Pure in Heart.

Just drive straight in and He will protect you.

3. The right lane of a roundabout is reserved for taxis to drop off passengers.

4. Double parking on roundabouts is only permitted if vendors are selling National Flags or watermelons.

5. Take the right hand lane if you are turning left, and vice versa.

6. If ‘other’ types of car use the fast lane, flash your headlights and they will get out of the way. Failing this, a gentle nudge to the bumper will do the trick.

7. Red traffic lights mean Stop! Green means Go!

* [Landcruisers and pickups are exempt from this rule.]

8. Always stay back at least ten inches from the car in front of you.

* [Landcruisers and pickups are exempt from this rule.]

9. Children sitting on the driver’s lap need not use a safety belt.

10. Use your horn frequently to signal “Have a Nice Day, Brothers!”

"When you believe in things that you don't understand, then you suffer...Superstition ain't the way, no no no..."

One day I was in my way to Qatar university . I was near a crouded roundabout and a foreign woman stopped her "BMW" car at the middle of the crouded street flashing her danger sign . People and I thought that her car broke down and we all used other lines of the road. In fact she delayed us . I went on my way again .Suddenly I saw the woman coming fast and stopping again flashing her danger signs again . Iwas behind her , so she told me to use the opposite line ,but I refused. Later she moved her "BMW" and parked her car in a right parking place .I wondered , Was she driving ?playing?or sleeping? I just took her car number in order to give it to the traffic authority!

Ok this one time I was in my friends car and suddenly we brake coz the car in front of us brakes and as luck would have it, we get bumped from the back... we turn and see a local guy on the cell phone gesturing to us to move on - no problem kinda thingy... my friend, being an agressive woman, pays no heed to his gesture and gets off the car to check out the damage. The bumper is dented bad and left tail light broken... when she tries to call the cops, the guy shouts at her saying, "I am police... your mistake... broblem (problem) you make brake fast"... then there was a kerfuffle and blah blah blah....

Can you imagine the audacity of the guy... now thats the attitude we shud all carry!

So the only people who drive badly are qataris???

I beg to differ.

Anyway a) it is their country and b)they can do what they want driving wise - there is little in place to stop them.

But if there were more traffic cops handing out tickets and fines at least some of the drivers would be better.

And a points system to get people off the road.

al waab street is getting hairy scary - it is either a massive 4x4 1 inch behind you or someone in the middle lane in 2nd gear.

While i was in dubai last week, there was this newspaper which had a full page pictures of traffic violators with the number and the type of violation made, the top of the page says: potential killers ...

It was an excellent idea, imagine if one sees the car of his nabour, friend or someone working with him on the daily newspaper.

They should do the same in doha. Qatari, i am sure you have WASTA man. talk to somebody :)

Yesterday, while going to work along the C-ring road to salwa road, an american car driven by a police man (I know, cause he had his uniform on)came in from the service road and brazently squeezed his way between me and the car infront without any indicator or hand movement, and then he just zigzaged thru' traffic.

I noted his number down and found his registration has expired on Aug' 2006 and he has parking violations during the current year.

I cannot understand, since he being a police man, obiviously his car is parked outside a police station and the powers that be have not been able to impound his car due to no road permit, and violations.

There has to be a way that the authorities can catch these violators without citizens having to complain. Like, we call a number at the traffic police and they send some one with a camera and photograph the violations of people taking the slip/service road just to get ahead of people (waiting in there cars following the rules.) or another instance is the airport signal, there are three lanes for cars to go left however, you will find a fourth lane of cars who have taken the straight road signal, turning left.

I do not deny that I am not a perfect driver, however, if someone signals they want to go ahead of me or cut infront of me, it is ok, but without any warning, could be dangerous. And with this heat makes me be crazy as well.

Yes bus stop sheds should be built as soon as possible. I once took a bus and it was hard standing by the sidewalk waiting for the next bus. I can only imagine the sacrifice of the people doing it daily. It would best if they build something people can sit and stay out of sun (or rain?) while waiting for the next trip.

The only thing is if these crappy drivers found some respect for people. I don't think it will ever happen. The crazy, dangerous drivers are like children. They will scream too much anyone tried to take away their toys or made them share.

Once I saw a LandCruiser park in front of a "No Parking/No Waiting" sign. When the driver opened the door, the inside of his door was filled with blue parking violation stickers. Imagine making those stickers as the wallpaper of his car door. They don't care about the fines.

Parking fines are personal violations really. But reckless driving is different because there will be other innocent people involved. This is what really worries me about the driving practices here in Qatar and considering they are strict on issuing a driver's license.

By C4 993 Driver• 6 May 2007 21:23
C4 993 Driver

if the cars are towed, they prevent traffic from being impeded. Most of the cars parked "illegally" impede the traffic flow. A missing car makes an impact statement...regardless of the fine.

Also concur with Joe's comment...too many dangerous activities on the road. Be careful out there people!!!

Compared to some of the stuff I see daily, those pics don't seem all that terrible. I don't get excited about the folks that do strange things to keep the traffic moving. It's the dangerous ones that make me angry.

Every day we see so many unbelted kids in vehicles, people getting cut off at high speed, blasting through red lights, turning left from the far right lane in heavy traffic...that's the stuff that makes the blood boil.

Somebody parking on the sidewalk is pretty benign.

I think we should start a business in towing cars into an impound lot. I've been here since Aug and have not seen ONE ticket given (other than the speed trap cameras)...not a parking ticket, speeding ticket, not using seat belt, etc...not a one.

I was talking with one of the Sheiks today regarding the parking situation and he mentioned that there was a concerted effort to delay the implementation of parking meters and other enforcement due to the fact that there was a popular backlash...
