if you mean screen ID/name, yeh thats permanent; you cant delete that, only alt. is to delete the whole A/c & create a new one.
it still deactivates only and nothing else...

There is a conspiracy theory that FB is managed by the "Administration" in a Big Brother kinda way - I dont mean QP Administration!!.
I hate Facebook for all this Over-Smartness they trying to play.Its like 'once you mistake of either creating your account, adding your pic, or any other personal details' its irreversible!
FB is no more a healthy Networking!
True, u cant delete the account but just deactivate it and when u login again u get a welcome message.
