Is Dating Legal or Illegal

Olive
By Olive

So Deepb and I stop hijacking the Single in Qatar thread :P I'm going to ask this important question here.

Is dating legal or illegal in Qatar? To clarify by dating I don't mean premarital sex or adultery, I mean going out to dinner and/or a movie with a man/woman who is not your husband/wife or relative.

There's been debate about this issue in the past on QL but I don't think anyone's ever given the exact answer. So here you go, anyone know?

Dating is immodest... An example ...

An Orthodox Jewish couple, preparing for a religious wedding meets with their rabbi for counseling. The rabbi asks if they have any last questions before they leave.

The man asks, "Rabbi, we realize it's tradition for men to dance with men, and women to dance with women at the reception. But, we'd like your permission to dance together, like the rest of the world."

"Absolutely not," says the rabbi. "It's immodest. Men and women always dance separately."

"So after the ceremony I can't even dance with my own wife?" "No," answered the rabbi. "It's forbidden."

"Well, okay," says the man, "What about sex? Can we finally have sex?"

"Of course!," replies the rabbi. "Sex is a mitzvah - a good thing within marriage, to have children!"

"What about different positions?" asks the man.

"No problem," sa ys the rabbi. "It's a mitzvah!"

"Woman on top?" the man asks.

"Sure," say s the rabbi. "Go for it! It's a mitzvah!"

"Doggy style?"

"Sure! Another mitzvah!"

"On the kitchen table?"

"Yes, yes! A mitzvah!"

"Can we do it on rubber sheets with a bottle of hot oil, a couple of

vibrators, a leather harness, a bucket of honey and a porno video?"

"You may indeed. It's all a mitzvah!"

"Can we do it standing up?"

"No." says the rabbi."

"Why not?" asks the man.

"Could lead to dancing."

I have chatted to a gazillion people in my lifetime....all colours, religions, nationalities and as far as I know it has never ever led to a divorce.

Such behaviour as adultery leads to divorce - it usually leads to just pleasantly passing the time or sometimes friendship.

I'm not wrong UKeng. Legally, they are not allowed to show knees or shoulders. So no miniskirts above knees or sleeveless tops. I did mention that these legalities are not necessarily enforced. But one complain from any malicious person and they will be enforced.

Oryx - miniskirt and sitting on someone's lap would definitely get you into trouble here. For one miniskirts are again illegal if they go above the knees ( another one of those rules which are enforced randomly). Sitting on someone's lap is public display of affection ( not allowed for married couples even ).

By Straight Arrow• 30 Mar 2010 13:08

are not allowed to chat with foreign women for nothing, but if it is for clean business or education or work then it is ok.

We have what is called the border line which we must not cross.

We also as Qataris know that the best Qatari people are those who are open minded and living with others in peace and following their religion.

The religion which tells us to respect the good values and ignore and correct the wrong and bad values.

'idle chat or flirtation' - but what is that Olive???

Very culturally subjective

If I look a Qatari guy straight in the eye, smile, say Salam Alekum - some would see that as way too forward.

If I had a miniskirt on, sat on someone's lap somewhere else, it wouldn't necessarily be seen as flirty.

And BTW I find a lot of Qataris just to be naturally charming....where is the line btw 'idle chat, good manners and a little flirty'?

Very hard to define - hence BIG blind eye

deepb, I agree with the last statement, and has happened in real life. When two are found sitting in isolation in a car for long or look or behave in a "suspicious" manner in darker quiet spots, they're prone and can be held liable if spotted by the police or complained against by the public.

deepb..by dating we mean two people a male and female sitting together over coffee or a meal. They may be alone or in a group. That is not prohibited by any law I know of in Qatar.

Of course malicious people can make a big deal out of it, report it to the police and wrap it in their own made-up "pervert" story.

Well under sharia law, dating would be illegal. I know criminal cases are judged under sharia law here. And civil cases are not judged under sharia if the people involved are non-muslims. So if someone complains, would this case be registered as a civil case or criminal? I'm thinking criminal.

If your still on the P90 program, remember the dietportions are intended for a Male and even then, they are quite on the heavy side. I'd recommend a much lower diet and continue with the same exercise routine. Also, 7 days a week is not that great, as the body does not have sufficient time to recover, so 4-5 day of the program on rotating basis would be better.

Where I come from, if a guy proposes, him and I are given a chance to get together a couple of times to get to know each other, supervised or unsupervised, preferably at the girl's home, in privacy.

If the girl expresses comfort, they may hang out for a couple of more times (outdoors) to test the waters and see how both are handling socialites and the like.

Families vary in terms of how long they let the couple-to-be see each other. Most probably they won't like it to continue for longer than a few weeks.

Nope FS, Sharia is applicable if someone complains to the non-muslim expatriates also. And yes olive, if someone complains you would be in trouble.

No I don't suppose I've been "caught" but than again I haven't gone to any great length to hide it. When we're out in public in a restaurant, we're on a date. What I'm curious about is what would happen in the next 32 days if someone reports me and my fiancee for "dating" while we're out for dinner.

Coffee and Lunch in a group and alone are two different things FS. As I said, I know about the sharia law that prohibits two unrelated people from opposite sex from being alone. Again, does being in a public place count as being alone? Saudi sticks to their laws and enforces them. Here they are enforced, if someone complains. If they don't complain you get away with it - does not make it legal.

The other day in Doha clinic… in a packed elevator a guy and gal were kissing...For a moment I was like am I in Qatar or somewhere else?? There were locals also there in the lift...as long as you are not caught..Nothing is illegal..

We do have coffee and lunch with our work associates and friends of opposite gender...no one ever bothered to ask if we are related.. I don’t think there is any law prohibiting that… WE ARE NOT IN SAUDI…

But in today's world, you just can't go and produce baby with anyone just like that. Isn't it? So people have to know each other and agree to making babies. Thats the reason why 'pre-mating' rituals like dating/being nice to each other etc. are required.

I hope this answers your curiosity ;)

and since it is one of the 'free' places here, there is no harm in inviting a female friend, for example. But then if you are stopped and questioned outside Qube while getting in or returning;then you are bound to face the music.

The call is personal really. I prefer to stay away from girls in public though even if they are my best friends.

By deepb• 30 Mar 2010 10:31

I think Olive wants to find out the technical law part of the law, not the part that is being chosen to be ignored or treated laxly. As far as I'm aware, its illegal for two people of opposite sex to be alone. So if anyone complains, dating would be punishable by law. I don't know about a movie or dinner, but a long drive would definitely be illegal.

Smoke.... I think a long drive together (just the two) can be looked at differently then going to a movie or dinner as then the two are alone in a closed place as against the other scenario where the two are still in public.

But as deepb said smoke, under Shariah law men and women aren't allowed to engage in idle chat or flirtation if they aren't married. The question is whether or not Qatar follows Shariah law.
