Everyday brings anguish

Everyday brings anguish

Generally, I like to write upbeat fabulous posts about how to enjoy a lovely day in the State of Qatar.

Today is different day, however.  Today, I had my heart broken.

I have no idea how I managed it, but I avoided the news yesterday evening until about 5pm today.  That blissful period ended abruptly as one of my colleagues expressed his shock about the attempted coup that took place in Turkey yesterday. I couldn’t believe it.

After the murders in Nice, I took a very very mini break from it all.  It just seems everyday brings anguish.  Like everyone on the planet is suffering.  And none of us can really stop it.  We are left to become forced spectators in this global tragedy.

Istanbul though, for me, was a city I had fallen in love with.  I have never travelled to any city twice, except Istanbul.  I had travelled 3 times!  This Eid was to be my fourth, but after the airport incident I cancelled the trip.

I loved how the city appeared as an open-air museum, history was everywhere.  The Turkish culture was strong and the European flair could not be missed.   I could keep going back to Istanbul and have a completely different trip than the last.  I never even visited the same places twice.

I loved the welcoming people, the handmade crafts, the history that covered the streets and the buildings.

Today, I watched the violence that erupted on those streets yesterday.  I saw the city grieve.  It was horrifying that a place the world came to celebrate history, culture, and tradition was being rocked by civil strife.  Particularly when we see what has happened in Syria and Egypt - the feel of foreboding is strong.

Can we not all just go to work, go to school, go to our homes and live peacefully?

Every year, it seems the situation on planet Earth is worse than the last.  It’s a scary thought to wonder where we will be in ten years from now.  We are all the same species on the same planet, but you'd never guess by how we treat each other.

Here’s to praying for the entire world.

Put up a common curriculum in the entire world, and see how quickly this world becomes a place, worthwhile for living.

Our species, the homo sapiens sapiens, roams the earth not longer than 40,000 years. The dinosaurs managed 300 million years, and even the Neanderthal Man populated earth for a period of more than 100,000 years. Then earth struck them with natural disasters (climate change, volcanic eruptions, and even asteroids). We'll get all this, too, sooner or later, but we do everything to accelerate our demise. We aren't meant to be.
