DAMAS DISAPPOINTED...

hello,
My husband and i recently purchase a gold bracelet in Damas, after few months wearing, somethings change. it becomes white, the gold disappears, then we went to the shop where we bought it and after 3 days, it went back to gold, now after around 6 months wearing it really turn to not gold, we went back again and try to let them do it the same gold, by the time my husband pick up the bracelet, they change it to white. They told us that the reason behind why the gold becomes white because of the perfume or lotion everyday wear but i confront the jeweller and told him no matter what you will put in it if it is really gold, it will be gold, i was really disaapointed with the service they give us and decided to not come back anymore, though i know damas is a famous jewellery shop here in qatar, could someone with you here refer me to a jewellery shop where they can provide good service? we pay the bracelet of 1500 qrs in gold and now they made it white. i was really disappointed, where can i complain? i have with me the receipt. but i need help,

thanks

If it's gold plated it can wear off and the base metal underneath can show through. Then it need to be re-plated with new gold. If the plating isn't too thick, it will of course wear off faster. But I don't suppose the jeweler ever said it would just be gold-plated and so you rightfully expected (and probably paid for) solid gold.

But gold is gold--it is a noble metal that is elemental. It doesn't react with most other chemicals (which is why it is so valuable) but can react with chlorine, fluorine, cyanide and some very strong acids (aqua regia) and can be dissolved in mercury. You really shouldn't wear chlorine as a perfume as it really isn't a fragrance that most other people enjoy and it will make you smell like you live in a swimming pool (except in our compound where maintenance doesn't know what chlorine is for) ;-) I wouldn't recommend strong acids or mercury for your body either.

Gold certainly doesn't fade or change colour. Gold is not a dye or chemical agent.

So yes, you're being hosed. And if they say they turned it to white gold, don't believe them. White gold is an alloy of gold mixed with another white metal (nickel, silver or palladium with the first two being the cheapest). The quality of the second metal being key to the quality of the jewelery and its lasting lustre. This would involve melting down the piece and then mixing it with the other metal before re-smithing the piece. I suspect if it is white, then it is just silver.

Isn't there a government agency that regulates the jewelery market for cases like this?

my suggestion is to go to another gold shop and have it estimated if it's real gold or not... otherwise it's just right to talk with a manager from Damas about your case. and if still you're not getting what you want, you can tell the police about it...

I imagine with that ID you are probably our in-house expert on precious metals and stones!

For the record, the majority of my gold necklaces and bracelets were bought for me by hub when he was in Abu-Dhabi and Saudi in the late 70s! *sigh* Now those were the days for good, cheap gold from the souks.

I have been a bit lazy DG - I usually go for that gym 'n swim early but today asked driver to pick me up at 8.30, and I just cancelled. Bit of a sore throat is my excuse today :(

I need to get the impetuous going again - maybe later today.

Gold turning white?? Are you sure it’s gold and not gold plated? All my gold, no matter how old, is still … gold!

Morning Jauntie, have you been for your morning swim? I just finished mine.

Yes it could be white gold painted with yellow gold, although this usually happens the other way round (ie yellow gold is painted with white gold). Sounds fishy to me. If you don't get satisfaction then you could tell them you are intending to go to the police. Definitely ask them if is solid gold and what colour of gold. Is it described on your receipt? It could be a case of fraud.

It's very name is the colour! I've never heard of it turning white (but then I'm not an expert, although I've had gold jewelry for decades and it's all STILL gold!)

@amber: Is it possible what you have there is white gold? Possibly white gold which has been treated in some way to give it the gold colour?

That happens in many many years, u said its only been there for a couple of month, go to Damas, demand management, if u r not happy with what they offer, demand a buy back, or even call the police, but pls make sure that bracelet stays with u. Honestly even the ones that are for 50 riyals dont turn color that fast, they are the biggest rip offs on the planet....
