over-rated, hyped and puffed resumes
By mheljescamae on Thu, 07/05/2009 - 4:25pm

I have noticed that most people in arab countries have over-rated, hyped and puffed up their resumes just to get high positions which they are not really CAPABLE of. They are just full of mouth-talking, self-proclaiming people...

I dont want to be racial, but most of Arabic and Indians are like that (but not all). Trying to hype in their resumes that they are like this and that, they have done/achieve this this and that, but when it comes to hands-on work, they have little knowledge about their work, and sometimes dont even know how to solve work problems.

It's like saying, they are admin assistant/secretary, but dont know even how to prepare a business letter...

It's like saying, they are electronic engineers, but arranging a sound problem with amplifier and CD player, they dont know how to identify which has problem and how to solve it...

It's like saying, they are an accountant, but all they know is just to prepare a manual cheque, which any person can do. Not even have knowledge of what accounting is and the principles behind it...

its really annoying to see and work with these kind of people ... but yani what to do... this is the TREND in arab countries... and by the way... there is really discrimination in arab countries when it comes to top positions...

in our country, when you wrote something in your resume and the company learn that it was false, that is already a ground for termination, but here.... ohmy.. forget it.

but what to do, i have been getting numb from this kind of trend and gradually trying to face it but not accept it. See it, hear it... forget it.
we're here to work, to earn for living and to save.. as long as they give me enough salary and on time, i'll just do my job, that's it... khalas..
sadly, cant build career here...

do you have/know someone like that in your work?
please share your experiences...

the probationary period,

for the employee to prove his/her real worth,

and the employer to find out the truth...

so who is to be blamed if employees still

managed to stick with the company after that

probi period?

Like your husband, I'm also in charge of reviewing CV's & distinguising upselling between lies. The key here is to be fair & not be judgemental especially with regards to their nationalities & with their "known" capabilities. When emotions & personal opinion comes into play, you'll instantly lose your right judgement.

I just don't like the idea when people becomes predujicial to other people's (& nationalities') CV writing style & then brand them of being incapable. Although statsitics could prove that to be correct, it doesn't give us the right to banner their shortcomings on any forum. Its a clear form of bashing. Or am I just experiencing a fit of paranoia...?

So the reason why I lifted this topic from its original location, just plain statistics. Is so that I could see comments from different sources... intelligent coming from right senses.

here's this applicant in our office that my boss liked instantly. i guess it's because she looks like the kind of person who would just say yes and agree with whatever my boss says. What my boss did, she asked our secretary to take out the CV of another staff who is holding the same post as this applicant is applying for and asked our secretary to revise the CV of this applicant by copying some info from the other CV. Fortunately, but unfortunately for my boss, during the interview with the Director, the applicant did not do well or maybe she was not able to justify what's written in her CV

birdie hands on experience cannot be written or shown on a CV......so the next best thing to do is to hype it so they will definately call you for an interview...so you can show them how experienced u are.

I agree with Novi... what is important is the hands on expereince on the domain.

what is the point haivng a 10 page hyped CV and the candidate does not do the basic things

I will prefer to have a low-profile CV with hands on experience

to make a CV look presentable sometimes you have to hype or puff it to a certain extent....its like upselling yourself......its up to the employer to see if your are really capable to do the job that you are being hired to do....if not they always have the option to reject.

So who would you blame here the person who hyped his CV or the employer.

My husband in charge in reviewing CVs , he told me certain nationalities tend to always have few diplomas certificates, and few master degrees certificates from various 'unknown universities'. And the applicant only 22 yrs old !!!

He usually always conduct a practical test and on the job test before deciding the said person are worth employed.

The idea to give an opinion about a certain topic when its being discussed is to write down our opinion on THAT very same thread. What are we to do here? What was the need to open another thread you could have just written your comments there.
