creating an auction site in doha

Its too much trouble for me to do it otherwise I'd be making a fortune now Money mouth- but is anyone out there interested in setting up a site for auctions, similar to ebay.    Distance defies using the ebay site for buying/selling as costs for transportation would be prohibitive, and seeing as I've had plenty things go missing with the Qatar Post Office, I wouldn't trust it anyway for delivering or sending overseas items.

However, I know that lots of folks here have items they need to buy/sell and this place is so transient, that it begs the need for an auction site.

So how about some of you entrepreneurs taking this suggestion on.   This is a great job for a 'stay-at-home' person needing the income or the stimulation of work.

Maybe I should explain some of what I've previously written regarding the labourers etc.

In another site (expatwoman.com) I asked if anyone was interested in helping the underprivedged labourers here. Here's a copy of what is written in expatwoman. If you are interested, then please feel free to respond.

Regarding helping the distressed labourers here in Doha. There are some workers who have good employers and a regular salary, they are the lucky ones. There are many more whose living quarters are abysmal, and whose living situations are going from bad to worse, even suicidal.

Would you like to help??

I want to know how many of you folk would like to donate something. I spoke to the Charge d'affairs at the Nepali embassy yesterday, and the problems of the labourers go up and down daily. There is a financial need right now for one particular worker. But one particular email from an expat mentioned a worker who was passing out from lack of good diet. He's only eaten rice for the past 3 months?? In his case, the workers are given 5 riyals per day for food, but with such a small salary, many won't spend the money to feed themselves properly, preferring to save it and send it home instead.

One worker I spoke with from Nepal recently was on 600 QR per month, which sounds quite OK. However, he has to get his own food out of that and pay something towards accomodation. This kind of abuse takes place regularly, so even though some may seem to get a reasonable salary, its taken from them in other ways.

Some of the needs that require financial attention are health treatment fees, electricity and water bills in the camps, sanitation problems, and repatriation fees.

I'm not asking what the legal problems are with all this, I just want to find out if there are enough folks who'd like to help.

To make sure we don't get this forum swamped , I think it would be best to write to my email address: [email protected]

Thanks, in anticipation.

the purpose of the site is not the profit, do we agree!!! good.

We can build the site with matching criteria each under specific category. Or we can let ppl themselves go and hunt. One thing i will have to ask about, is the "DONATION FEES" we get. what is the bank account and the legality of it. Even Qatari can help us in this matter.

I'm sure a store site like you mentioned could be useful here... it works in UK with Tesco Waitrose Sainsbury's etc using that format. I even use it to send things to my son there. However, I'm not interested in that kind of thing, so that's all your baby.

I want a simple site with opportunity to buy/sell items among the community here. Things that even labourers will have access too, like old bicycles, someone wanting to get rid of old carpet etc etc. And eventually I'd like the main profits (after all costs and payments have been met) to go towards the efforts to help the labourers here.

Having said that, I have not copywritten anything, and I don't intend to right now, so if someone wants to get this up and running and wants to pocket the proceeds then go ahead. It will still be a very useful site. I'm an inventor, not a creator when it comes to ideas. Mohammed... I'll chat with you tomorrow, and travelgate, let me know more about your ideas with sponsors etc etc. Thanks for the input from you other folks too.

Great this was exactly what i was thinking of doing, hows the plan going so far? We need something like an online mall thingy. I was thinking of something kinda different like say a online grocery shopping sorta stuff..where u can place ur shopping list online and have it delivered right to ur door...for this we'd need to take on customers on membership basis..where people buy membership at a fixed MONTHLY rate. Ok thats just my thoughts...and its copywrited so i get to choose website name hehe!!

As long as I'm not going to get my head into a legal noose, I'm definitely up for it.

Let me know more.

Angel for the site setup fees up-till it is running would not be a big deal. If u wish we can split cost. later from each transaction posted we can have such initial low fees, then if the displayed ad is sold we have a percentage from the total value. Actually it can be both ways. We cover our cost and after, all the money can go as u mentioned. If you are serious enough i can get sponsers.

Specialist auction software is necessary. There's a free PHP auction script at http://www.traffic-n-more.com/downloads.htm

Otherwise there's auction software for sale.

Or why not create an eBay account or store for the purpose. In the shipping options sections you could have Qatar only or local pickup only.

Domain name needed too.

Oooh yeahh!! I could go along with this. It is definitely a project that I could use. OK how about this.

I would like to be able to help the labourers here and financially it needs a lot of folks with open purses, but an auction site like this could generate money which could be then used for such charitible purposes. I am talking about raising money for the cost of running the site, and the fees for posting an item/s for auction. Any leftovers would go to the 'charity'... ie the workers and labourers that face daily abuse of non-payment of salaries, food shortages, hospital fees etc etc.

At an ex-school of my children in Athens, we parents used to have something called a 'broadsheet' which would list the various items that were available for sale/or required. You paid per word for the Ad, but the availability of the Broadsheet was free. So instead of the whole bling set-up of an Ebay-type site, with all its legalities, we only need a basic site with minimal fee structure. Payment for any work done, and materials used could be deducted from the fees, and the rest put to the use mentioned above. OR HAVE I GONE TOO FAR ALREADY.

If no-one agrees with that, maybe we could just have someone to help set up a site and leave it at that for the time being. We'd all make use of it big-time, I'm sure of that.

Thanks,

Angelwings.

Worth looking into and finding out what the potential market is like. Perhaps end of summer would be a good launch date as I'm unsure how many buyer/bidder surfers will be around in the next couple of months. Your thoughts?
