Does anybody have information about fishes in qatar? Sometimes we are going to fishing but cannot identify some fishes. So we could not know how to cook.
Common species with photos or links can be helpful.
I really feel like having fish biryani made with paaplate (pompret).. Or deep fried humour.. Yummmmmmmm..Or some bhombil (bombay ducks).. I love them..
Realy take much time to answer your query, many of them found already pictured, a lot is waiting to again come up with its name. Coocking each of these have different method but a common method applicable to all is to apply littile salt and red chilli powder on the cut pieces and fry it. just wipe the fry pan with oil, and put a lowest flame and close it after placing the fish to get it coocked well, wow. you cannot belive it how much tasty is this. simple, easy and fantabulous.
It is given in Arabic , that one is .. lol 'Hamaam' like 'Pigeon' and not the other 'Hammam', lol again ...
Lol, Ram .. I just spent my whole life in Doha on the beaches fishing or swimming. I caught most of these fishes for real if not all and the one called 'Hryrey' or 'Sous' I swear to god that we got a 25KG and more than 1 meter in length one from 'Al Wakrah'. Spent like 25 minutes to get it out of the sea and Hook it with a big hook to bring it out. I miss those old days where you can go and fish anywhere and get some monsters out there ... Will look if I can find some photos, but most of them are from the old days and looked too scary back then. Typical Afro with big funky hair :)
How did u know all this about fishes .. all i know is fried and grilled fish and to eat them .. and that's fine with me .. i don't even feel difference in taste if the fish where changed .. it's all white meat for me .. but i love eating fish soooooo much even the sea snake i used to eat it in the old days in egypt .. don't know if it is here or not ..
nice topic and it made me hungry .. lemme go n eat ..
No copy right on the photos, most of them are from educational websites so go ahead and have fun man. I will update the thread with more if I got the chance later. and lol mufy, just take the print out and see, this fish is on the list? no .. return it back to the sea ..
i hope these pictures do not have copyright protection. even if they do i am going to make illegal copies of them, distribute them, sell them and print them.
for all of QL fish lovers members. Wish I can get more than those, but I find those around the net :) if you want more than those just let me know and I will look for them ...
Goodnight to all, sorry to make QL fishy, Qatari will kill me for this :)
That was the collection that I got for you guys, hope that it helps. Sorry for uploading image by image, was too slow while trying to upload more than one at once.
You know tsokoy/siokoy is half man and half fish. They are the male version of Mermaid in tagalog "Sirena" which is half woman and half fish too. Get it?
it's eyes wide open Abol :) ... these creatures are really strange .. you are telling me fish never sleeps and I'm telling you Donkey spend all the day awake and standing ... in the night even he sleeps while he is standing ... Koalas never drink water or they will die ... This world is full with strange and amazing thing .. but the most amazing creature is the human .. his wonders never end and whenever you say .. there is an end or limit to that .. you find out that you were wrong :)
Serious .. they sleep between the rocks, with eyes open ... if you were lucky to go down with a spear gun in the winter nights and look between the rocks, you will find it sleeping there, just aim your light and it would freeze and then .. it is done.
Also the fish mouth, the fish lips [if it has some] when the hook hit this area when you catch the fish, the fish can't feel anything because it has no nerves in there. Some of the fish use it's mouth to crack sea shells and stuff like that, so that is why it does not have nerves there. It would be paining like hell if it would feel the pain every time it hits the shell with the rocks using its mouth trying to crack it :)
who came up with the name "Sultan Ibrahim" For a fish. I am so eager to see see its picture, never heard about it. I have been fishing for quite some time but haven't gone for fishing in Qatar for the past 6 years now.
I remeber we used to catch "Lehla" its meat is kinda bit red in color due to high percentage of haemoglobin in it.
"Hamour" is my favorite has a really big mouth and head and can stay alive for a very long time outside water. it is red big dots on its body like a dalmation dog.
"Surmai" is long and you normally catch it in winter and during early morning. puts up a fierce fight when is pulled outside
"Subaiti" is the most expensive one (six years ago) can;t say about now.
"Lukhma" is the rayfish or stingray. u can catch plenty of it around the corniche (though fishing is banned there now)
"Shehri" "Gurkufan" don;t even remember the names of others now but normally people buy hamour and shehri
First wash fishes with cold water. Then cover bottom of baking pan with vine leaves. Align fishes on leaves.Chop the tomato(without peels), italian peper, garlic and parsley into small pieces. Then mix them with chili.Poure this mixture on fishes. Add butter , salt and water and cook 20-30 minutes in oven.
Chinese people hang the snake (not the water snake real wild snake) by its tail alive and cut its neck by a sharp knife and then collect the blood in a cup and drink it. Then cut the snake in to small pieces and fried with vegetables, tomato and onions and eat it. wants to watch a VCD how they do it?
And additional, i search for sultan ibrahim and i saw that that is generaly called red mullet. We have this fish also in Black Sea. We are cooking it with different method ...fried in butter with some tomato.
I love the red snapper here. it tastes good with all cooking methodes, you can fry or grill it or cook in the oven with sauce and vegetables.
The "gurgoufan-not so sure of the spelling" and "bouri" are good for grilling.
the "sultan ibrahim and Sherri" are better when fried, as a general note all white fish tastes good when u mariante them in garlic and spices, coat with flour then just fry, them squeeze some lemon over it.
Glad to tell you that there's a fish market at night (around 8pm) in the Corniche near the Chess(looks like bishop) roundabout. A little expensive compared to the fish market but there are lots of variaties (dont know their names also) and sometimes they are still getting them from the fish net.
Just pretend you're a tourist and take pictures of the merchants as well. They love to smile for the camera. Go in Bermuda shorts if possible and a hat.

I will post the photos tonight along with the names for every fish. Waiting just to go home because they are on my Desktop and not the Laptop :)
This is white pomfret, it's a variety of the Zubeidi sold locally but much more delicious in my opinion.
It's usually imported from Iran or Oman. It's available in Kuwait also. Quite expensive, I got some yesterday at 46 Riyals a kilo.
Our favorite fish at home.
The picture doesn't do it justice. It's whiteness is snow white.
thanks gurkan, can't wait to try it!

** PEACE AND BE COOL **
I have hots for chicken. (you know what I meant) tourist thing doesn't work. we are regulars and they recognize us.
Weirdo as in having the hots for fish?
Just pretend you're a tourist and take pictures of the merchants as well. They love to smile for the camera. Go in Bermuda shorts if possible and a hat.
do you think they wll allow me to photograph their fish/ they may think that I am a weirdo.
Take the pictures and I'll take it from there.
I have a problem. I don't know the names.
Ok, you go early Friday morning. Last Friday I had a major plumbing disaster at 6.30 a.m. and believe me I was one grouchy person.
Main Fish Market on a Friday Morning as the variaty is more there
I cook Hammour fish as sweet & sour, its yummy!
By whom?
Just kidding. Options are the main Fish Market (early morning) or the fish section at a supermarket such as FFC or Carrefour.
Just names and cooking methods can be usefull. With names i can search pictures from net
I am volunteered.
Guess we need a visit to the fish market with a camera in tow. Who wants to go?
i am interested in this subject as well. not for fishing but to buy the fish from Fish Market.
