gurkan
By gurkan

Hi everbody ,

Does anybody have information about fishes in qatar? Sometimes we are going to fishing but cannot identify some fishes. So we could not know how to cook.
Common species with photos or links can be helpful.

I find this a very good guide to the fishes in the markets in Qatar:

http://www.fao.org/docrep/010/v8729e/v8729e00.htm

It is free to download and has colour plates at the back. It includes the English and Arabic names for the fish. :D

Realy take much time to answer your query, many of them found already pictured, a lot is waiting to again come up with its name. Coocking each of these have different method but a common method applicable to all is to apply littile salt and red chilli powder on the cut pieces and fry it. just wipe the fry pan with oil, and put a lowest flame and close it after placing the fish to get it coocked well, wow. you cannot belive it how much tasty is this. simple, easy and fantabulous.

It is given in Arabic , that one is .. lol 'Hamaam' like 'Pigeon' and not the other 'Hammam', lol again ...

Lol, Ram .. I just spent my whole life in Doha on the beaches fishing or swimming. I caught most of these fishes for real if not all and the one called 'Hryrey' or 'Sous' I swear to god that we got a 25KG and more than 1 meter in length one from 'Al Wakrah'. Spent like 25 minutes to get it out of the sea and Hook it with a big hook to bring it out. I miss those old days where you can go and fish anywhere and get some monsters out there ... Will look if I can find some photos, but most of them are from the old days and looked too scary back then. Typical Afro with big funky hair :)

how did you know these things..were you there with them in between rocks..peace! :P

By King Edshel• 6 Jun 2007 21:14
King Edshel

Serious .. they sleep between the rocks, with eyes open ... if you were lucky to go down with a spear gun in the winter nights and look between the rocks, you will find it sleeping there, just aim your light and it would freeze and then .. it is done.

Also the fish mouth, the fish lips [if it has some] when the hook hit this area when you catch the fish, the fish can't feel anything because it has no nerves in there. Some of the fish use it's mouth to crack sea shells and stuff like that, so that is why it does not have nerves there. It would be paining like hell if it would feel the pain every time it hits the shell with the rocks using its mouth trying to crack it :)

who came up with the name "Sultan Ibrahim" For a fish. I am so eager to see see its picture, never heard about it. I have been fishing for quite some time but haven't gone for fishing in Qatar for the past 6 years now.

I remeber we used to catch "Lehla" its meat is kinda bit red in color due to high percentage of haemoglobin in it.

"Hamour" is my favorite has a really big mouth and head and can stay alive for a very long time outside water. it is red big dots on its body like a dalmation dog.

"Surmai" is long and you normally catch it in winter and during early morning. puts up a fierce fight when is pulled outside

"Subaiti" is the most expensive one (six years ago) can;t say about now.

"Lukhma" is the rayfish or stingray. u can catch plenty of it around the corniche (though fishing is banned there now)

"Shehri" "Gurkufan" don;t even remember the names of others now but normally people buy hamour and shehri

This is white pomfret, it's a variety of the Zubeidi sold locally but much more delicious in my opinion.

It's usually imported from Iran or Oman. It's available in Kuwait also. Quite expensive, I got some yesterday at 46 Riyals a kilo.

Our favorite fish at home.

The picture doesn't do it justice. It's whiteness is snow white.

Chinese people hang the snake (not the water snake real wild snake) by its tail alive and cut its neck by a sharp knife and then collect the blood in a cup and drink it. Then cut the snake in to small pieces and fried with vegetables, tomato and onions and eat it. wants to watch a VCD how they do it?

I love the red snapper here. it tastes good with all cooking methodes, you can fry or grill it or cook in the oven with sauce and vegetables.

The "gurgoufan-not so sure of the spelling" and "bouri" are good for grilling.

the "sultan ibrahim and Sherri" are better when fried, as a general note all white fish tastes good when u mariante them in garlic and spices, coat with flour then just fry, them squeeze some lemon over it.

enjoy!

Glad to tell you that there's a fish market at night (around 8pm) in the Corniche near the Chess(looks like bishop) roundabout. A little expensive compared to the fish market but there are lots of variaties (dont know their names also) and sometimes they are still getting them from the fish net.

Try and see, it's a good adventure.
