Coming next Saturday to visit Nov 3 2007 - Then make decision to move to Qatar for two years

By Relocate

My company has asked me to relocate to Qatar for two years or more. I currently live in the US in Indiana - I am sure it will be quite different living in Doha. My company rents a villa with a maid service and a pool (all sounds nice) - but I would not live and work with the same people everyday - even best of friends end up at each others throats after a while. I would be working inside the base - but would have to live outside of the base as a contractor. I am coming to do this short visit Saturday Nov 3 -8th 2007 to look at housing and cost of living - cars prices etc, as well as meeting the people who I would be working with. When I return home to the US with all my information - I must then decide if I should take the position for triple my current salary. My question is - what is a really nice place to live (considering I will be working at the base) - so I can go look at some villas or apartments on this trip - I want to live in a nice place - also - what any other words of wisdom for aiding me in negotiations with my company that are not normally thought of until after you arrive? HELP

Alexa - my daughter and I went with my husband and for 3 weeks, she and I wandered around Athens while he worked. We had a great time. All of us took a boat out to Hydra too and that was great. No cars on the island. Just donkeys.

Here's what she had to say about Greece -

"I live on a tiny island (when I can) called AGISTRI... it is sooo non touristy, but you can catch boats to other islands and do shopping spree's and wander round historic sites etc. You are 50 minutes from the mainland, and 4 mins from the station to take you to the centre of athens (15 mins) and the Acropolis.

Check out Hotel Milos Agistri and you'll see what I'm talking about. Its direct flights to Athens, and nice journey to the island too."

So - now that your summer is planned - hope you actually take the job! Good luck house hunting.

You know - just me being bored - but my husband has been to Slovenia the last two summers and says it's great for families. Hoping to take all of us this year. There was also a lady over on expatwoman.com talking about a little island in Greece that's super for familes and her family went ever year and even ended up buying a house there. I'll look for the link.

Yeah - it's not that cold but it gets chilly with all these high ceilings and tile, tile, tile. There was a waiting list for heaters last year at Carrefour! We never slept with one in our bedroom but I used one for the kids because they're little and always out of the sheets. Maybe buy one Saturday and get a friend to hold it. :) Only kidding.

By Scarlett• 1 Nov 2007 23:20

most houses have no heating..and the same insulation that keeps the heat OUT in the summer, keeps the cold IN in the winter..lol

ok on Europe...take thekids before July..cause after that, European school are out and EVERYONE is on vacation and its packed!!!

I hear a lot about scrambling for heaters in Doha!!?!? What is that all about? Does it really get that cold???

Thank you for the info - I am from the North in the US - I didnt realize they made cooling systems for pools! A lot of the time they are frozen where I come from.

My EX wife won't let me take them anywhere near the middle east for the summer - so I guess it really wont be an issue - I will just look at doing a vacation in Europe or Greece. Kids and wife would like that I think - I think I would as well

I can give you one compound that has a pool with a cooling system - Al Zuhoor. Very nice place. Don't know if there are any openings though.

alexa is right about summertime and kids..not a whole lot to do here except go to the malls and ice skate,movies..its HOT..about 115+ up to 125 degrees from late June through late Sept. Nights are tolerable..down to 100. Can't take the kids out in that...just a word of advice...Not trying to talk you out of it..just being honest especially since you hve 7 kids..

By Scarlett• 1 Nov 2007 22:44

hot bathwater in the pools??more like human stewpots..lol Definitely get a unit with a cooling system for the pool!!!

If all those guys are coming with you then your company has to be paying for schooling! Very expensive and make sure they all have a spot because waiting list are very long.

Dont worry you will be getting a very handsome salary package and you will probably save enough money in 3-4 years by working in Qatar to buy yourself a big house in States.

Anyways Welcome to Qatar

But westbay is a little far from the base. If you mean the base towards Umm Said. I forget the name of it. The one with the airstrip. Lots of nice villas around Khalifa Stadium. Al Waab area. Beverly Hills 1-3, Al Zuhoor, Green Village, Al Fardan 2 (further down towards industrial area), etc. I saw in the paper one for rent in Beverly Hills #? for 25,000 QR. Lots of amenities in all those compounds I listed. Drive down Al Waab street and take different side roads around the stadium. In between Al Waab and Salwa are some nice places.

For triple the salary - you can handle Doha for 2 years.
