Coming next Saturday to visit Nov 3 2007 - Then make decision to move to Qatar for two years
My company has asked me to relocate to Qatar for two years or more. I currently live in the US in Indiana - I am sure it will be quite different living in Doha. My company rents a villa with a maid service and a pool (all sounds nice) - but I would not live and work with the same people everyday - even best of friends end up at each others throats after a while. I would be working inside the base - but would have to live outside of the base as a contractor. I am coming to do this short visit Saturday Nov 3 -8th 2007 to look at housing and cost of living - cars prices etc, as well as meeting the people who I would be working with. When I return home to the US with all my information - I must then decide if I should take the position for triple my current salary. My question is - what is a really nice place to live (considering I will be working at the base) - so I can go look at some villas or apartments on this trip - I want to live in a nice place - also - what any other words of wisdom for aiding me in negotiations with my company that are not normally thought of until after you arrive? HELP
welcome to Doha .. nice to see you have a head start on things here .. weathers nice enough .. you need to hit the dunes asap .. next weekend hopefully eh :) .. traffics alright .. you need a while to get used to it and soon enough you shall be zipping around like us :D
life goes on ..
I'll bring food...best way to always get invited back on a boat...lol
We took 25 people out as a gesture of goodwill - next trip (we are going to do something every month (stress reduction) I will let you know - or if I purchase - I will let you know
blazing hot in the summertime and colder than you know what in the winter...but no snow like Indiana...lol
You've been here less time than i have and already you've gone on a boat..I'm jealous...I wanna go!!!
and my shoes are made of clay from China for my salary and the reality of Qatar.
The Red Pope of Qatar Living
So far so good - Took a nice wooden boat ride - it was awesome - great food. I have many relative rancher in Texas - Laredo!
relocate...back home we call the wanna be cowboys goat ropers, because they didn't know enough to rope a cow or steer!! lol
Also called them drug store cowboys..stood with all the cowboy gear on, leaning against the drug store wall...bout as close to a ranch as they got...
How the heck are you enjoying Doha????
I am manager of an American company which is a millitary contractor. We are building at the base
Goat rope is american slang for CRAZY

I would rather have one rose and a kind word from a friend while I'm here
Than a whole truck load when I'm gone
Here now - Started driving - CRAZY driving here! No one told me what a goat rope driving is here!!
Good luck! Try to make the most of it and enjoy.

OK - I came - I saw - I accepted the offer. Thank all you for the input. See you there
Alexa - my daughter and I went with my husband and for 3 weeks, she and I wandered around Athens while he worked. We had a great time. All of us took a boat out to Hydra too and that was great. No cars on the island. Just donkeys.
Here's what she had to say about Greece -
"I live on a tiny island (when I can) called AGISTRI... it is sooo non touristy, but you can catch boats to other islands and do shopping spree's and wander round historic sites etc. You are 50 minutes from the mainland, and 4 mins from the station to take you to the centre of athens (15 mins) and the Acropolis.
Check out Hotel Milos Agistri and you'll see what I'm talking about. Its direct flights to Athens, and nice journey to the island too."
So - now that your summer is planned - hope you actually take the job! Good luck house hunting.
You know - just me being bored - but my husband has been to Slovenia the last two summers and says it's great for families. Hoping to take all of us this year. There was also a lady over on expatwoman.com talking about a little island in Greece that's super for familes and her family went ever year and even ended up buying a house there. I'll look for the link.
next dose!! see ya later on here!! night all!
double doses of antihistamines...but at least face is looking better! ;) now working on the neck area..
it wasn't raining when Noah built the ark...lol
what you doing up late at night???
Yeah - it's not that cold but it gets chilly with all these high ceilings and tile, tile, tile. There was a waiting list for heaters last year at Carrefour! We never slept with one in our bedroom but I used one for the kids because they're little and always out of the sheets. Maybe buy one Saturday and get a friend to hold it. :) Only kidding.
most houses have no heating..and the same insulation that keeps the heat OUT in the summer, keeps the cold IN in the winter..lol
ok on Europe...take thekids before July..cause after that, European school are out and EVERYONE is on vacation and its packed!!!
I hear a lot about scrambling for heaters in Doha!!?!? What is that all about? Does it really get that cold???
Thank you for the info - I am from the North in the US - I didnt realize they made cooling systems for pools! A lot of the time they are frozen where I come from.
My EX wife won't let me take them anywhere near the middle east for the summer - so I guess it really wont be an issue - I will just look at doing a vacation in Europe or Greece. Kids and wife would like that I think - I think I would as well
I can give you one compound that has a pool with a cooling system - Al Zuhoor. Very nice place. Don't know if there are any openings though.
alexa is right about summertime and kids..not a whole lot to do here except go to the malls and ice skate,movies..its HOT..about 115+ up to 125 degrees from late June through late Sept. Nights are tolerable..down to 100. Can't take the kids out in that...just a word of advice...Not trying to talk you out of it..just being honest especially since you hve 7 kids..
hot bathwater in the pools??more like human stewpots..lol Definitely get a unit with a cooling system for the pool!!!
Ah - summer in Qatar. They're going to think Dad has moved to hell. Better get a place with a pool! :)
Unfortunatley - they are not coming except for possibly the summer - when they are on holiday from school
If all those guys are coming with you then your company has to be paying for schooling! Very expensive and make sure they all have a spot because waiting list are very long.
May God Almighty bless you with more....Amen
Thank you - I have seven kids - so I need a big house
Dont worry you will be getting a very handsome salary package and you will probably save enough money in 3-4 years by working in Qatar to buy yourself a big house in States.
Anyways Welcome to Qatar
Thank you - I will keep that in mind
Just be careful - leave yourself some room to grow because rents rise constantly and by a lot.
Pls check your PM, i have sent you the number.
Not sure what the company will budget for my housing - I may elect to bank the money and live in less spicy accomodations!
Yes please on the agent assist
Yeah me either! Little resort that place is.
PWB ... been to the house in Beverly Hills 2. It is really nice house. With their own little pool and gym in each houses. :D
Unfortunately we can't afford that compound :(
But Novita is right - Westbay is very nice and on the water
But westbay is a little far from the base. If you mean the base towards Umm Said. I forget the name of it. The one with the airstrip. Lots of nice villas around Khalifa Stadium. Al Waab area. Beverly Hills 1-3, Al Zuhoor, Green Village, Al Fardan 2 (further down towards industrial area), etc. I saw in the paper one for rent in Beverly Hills #? for 25,000 QR. Lots of amenities in all those compounds I listed. Drive down Al Waab street and take different side roads around the stadium. In between Al Waab and Salwa are some nice places.
For triple the salary - you can handle Doha for 2 years.
Would you like me to PM you my girlfriend number who work as a house agent? If you have a high allowance for housing ... i am sure she will be more than happy to assist you.
West Bay - Will give it a try - Thank you!
west bay is nice area ... There are loads of villas with private pools around that area.
