Coming to Doha?

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the site!  My husband and I are thinking about moving to Qatar sometime in the next year or two.  He was born in Doha and his mothers family is there.  We are currently in the United States and needless to say, I'm alittle nervous as to moving to a new country.  We don't have a date exactly and my husband is looking to finish his schooling first but it's something that we thought we had better start tenatively planning so as how it is such a drastic change.  Of course my husband knows the country like the back of my hand but I have yet to even visit.

Our "plan" is for him to have a job offer before we even consider the move.  How easy is it for him to bring me over on spouse visa? I've read where I can come on tourist?  Also, will I be able to work also?  Is it easy for an American to get a job? I just have so many questions.  lol  standard of living, what the apts look like, how the shops are, etc.

I know it's hard to say what the country will be like in the next year or two but if someone could give me a clue as to what to expect I would certainly appreciate it.

So far the prices for the a 3 bedroom in the piazza are £280k british pounds.  The studios start out at £120k british pounds.  With no maids room as well.  I don't know what people living in Qatar really think about the project. You may want to ask them about it.

the piazza is somewhat cheaper than the pearl. But the pearl will be more luxurious.

I love new experiences and new cultures.  Living with my husband, I'm alittle more intune with the Muslim/Arabic (ie; traditions, religion, etc.) way of living but I'm also interested in the atmosphere as to how the local population views the westerners.  Also, because I'm christian and my husband is muslim are there generally any problems that we could tenatively run in to?  I know this shouldn't be a problem but it just makes me alittle leery being out of my home environment.  I guess I'm just curious as to the overall situation there.

Places on the Pearl are they going to be quite expensive?  I know the housing situation is expensive anyway but just wondered about the price range.

We are hoping to come over this summer to see him mom, so I guess I'll get a better understanding then.  Nothing like seeing it for yourself.

Anyway,  thank you all so much for your help.  I look forward to meeting you guys when we make the move.  Though it may be a couple of years, I'm sure alot of you will still be around.

red riding hood.. I do not live in Qatar...

however, I hear they have places to buy in the Pearl(ready by 2009) and piazza (damac properties that will be built by 2010) that offer a residency visa.

I don't know if that would interest your family. However, it is an option I have been looking into due to my mother in law.

should be getting American citizenship in the next 18 months.  It is really that big of a help?

Engineering From US University, if he had at least five years experience, is ok, he can fine a good paying position. Is he an American Citizen yet? If he do the bigger chance he can get. If He had a family here, still he would not able to get RP under his parents because he is for sure over 18 years old. Better buy a real property to get that target.

Also, he is studying engineering.  Which is the best company to apply for positions as far as pay, benefits, etc.?

He actually holds a Jordanian passport.  No, his mother is not citizen.  I just wondered if they would be able to sponsor him or he had to have a job.  I'm quite new to all of this and I feel completely in the dark.  I want to know what to expect as far as requirements, etc.  My husband seems to think that I will love it.  It's just so far away, I'm not sure.

is it not depend on the job status? if he offered a married contract job the company should look after the whole family moving to Qatar.

however ... if the job on single status ... to bring the wife i think you will have to earn minimum salary (no idea about the amount) in order to be allow to sponsoring her.

It was in relation to the original question. Bringing his wife as a spouse. It would have been simpler had he been Qatari. Also the jobs situation, a Qatari wouldn't have a problem coming back without a job whereas other nationalities may do (if recruited locally).

Nov, maybe you (sweety) could assist as you are in Qatar and I am not.

Thanks ;-)

or is it rather what passport he is holding?

I guess it matters as far as him getting a job here, his pay, their visas...Would be a different approach if he was "local."

I am sorry ... i am kinda lost here. So what if he is palestinian, and so what if he is Qatari and so what if he is other nationalities???

He is actually Palestinian and was born in Qatar.  His mom still lives in Qatar but I want to get an actual "view" from people not originally there.  You know, most people have a rather slanted view of their own country.

said "he was born in Doha", is he Qatari or just born in Doha?

It might seem an odd question but it makes a heck of a difference.
