Chinese/Japanese Food

Can anyone rate the non-hotel based Chinese and Japanese restaurants in Doha? Are there any pure Japanese restaurants? I know a couple of Korean restaurants that serve Japanese.

It's in the Mergab/Al Nasr street. It's almost directly opposite the Family Food Center, Pizza Hut and the new KFC.

At the Ramada traffic lights drive as if you're going towards the Industrial Area. On your right will be Eli France and the Hyundai showroom, then Modern Home and Jarir. Drive on. The second right turn (the first being the one right next to Jarir) there is a strip mall. Almost in the middle is Neo. It has a small entrance so you might miss it.

any food from any restaurant outside their home country, is no longer authentic. how could a Thai cook produced a good shusi? or a Philipino cook serve you the best Chinese dishes?

but in doha, Beijing and Korean Garden both can give you "Chinese" and "Korea" taste.

So no short-list of good Chinese/Japanese that deliver? Not edible, but enjoyable.

The Far Eastern on Family Food Centre Road used to allow you to take your own booze some years ago providing that you left what you didn't drink.

Two of the staff were picked up (absolutely legless) by the police later in the evening. I'm not sure what the outcome was as they place belonged to and the employees were sponsored by the Chief of Police.

The US FDA in 1995 issued a report on MSG that stated the following:

Among the report's key findings:

* An unknown percentage of the population may react to MSG and develop MSG symptom complex, a condition characterized by one or more of the following symptoms:

* burning sensation in the back of the neck, forearms and chest

* numbness in the back of the neck, radiating to the arms and back

* tingling, warmth and weakness in the face, temples, upper back, neck and arms

* facial pressure or tightness

* chest pain

* headache

* nausea

* rapid heartbeat

* bronchospasm (difficulty breathing) in MSG-intolerant people with asthma

* drowsiness

* weakness.

* In otherwise healthy MSG-intolerant people, the MSG symptom complex tends to occur within one hour after eating 3 grams or more of MSG on an empty stomach or without other food. A typical serving of glutamate-treated food contains less than 0.5 grams of MSG. A reaction is most likely if the MSG is eaten in a large quantity or in a liquid, such as a clear soup.

* Severe, poorly controlled asthma may be a predisposing medical condition for MSG symptom complex.

* No evidence exists to suggest that dietary MSG or glutamate contributes to Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's chorea, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, AIDS dementia complex, or any other long-term or chronic diseases.

* No evidence exists to suggest that dietary MSG causes brain lesions or damages nerve cells in humans.

* The level of vitamin B6 in a person's body plays a role in glutamate metabolism, and the possible impact of marginal B6 intake should be considered in future research.

* There is no scientific evidence that the levels of glutamate in hydrolyzed proteins causes adverse effects or that other manufactured glutamate has effects different from glutamate normally found in foods.

MSG is unfortunately the essence of chinese cuisine which makes the food so tasty. I however find it being used excessively here. Thirst is the first symptom. I've not herd of headaches though. Other supposed effects are hair loss, so go easy on these.

Does anyone have a problem with Monosodium Glutamate used as a food additive in Chinese restaurants?

I know some people complain of headaches.

Coming from a place where food are great, aplenty and reasonably priced, I realise beggars ain't choosers. Moon Palace and Korean Garden are the same owners so I heard. Food is decent enough in both places but far from great. Sakura is pure japanese outlet but the standard doesn't warrant the price. Beijing is ok, guess I shouldn't complain too much and thank God for food.

Moon Palace got busted, I think it was last year for allowing customers to BYOB.

Moon Palace is a pretty good Korean restuarant, and their sushi is ok. Unfortunately I don't think I've found a truly good sushi or Korean place in Doha. :(

Korean Gardens used to serve beer which is a big plus point. Only budweiser but it was cold.

The place on merghab street half way down with crappy asian food lets you take your own wine/beer then they serve it to you in a teapot which is pretty cool. Far East?

Don't know about Neo.

Moon Palace on Margab Street (on the end close to the Giant Store) does the best Japenese outside of the hotels. The sushi is better at Neo, but Moon Palace is more authentic and does a nice job all around--Neo isn't really a Japenese restaraunt once you get past the sushi portion of the menu.

I once went to Korea Gardens to get a take-away menu to take home. They said they didn't have one, couldn't photocopy one and couldn't fax one later and that I'd have to order there. Never went back.

Moon Palace, on the other hand, gave me one of their in-house menus to keep.

We've been to Korea Gardens quite a few times, although not as often as Moon Palace because of the recent roadworks in the KG area... must go back again. They seem fairly similar really, but I do prefer the atmosphere at MP...

Neo is on Salwa Road in the strip mall jusy past Jarir on your right. Spot on about Caravan. Same re- Moon Palace although I've had it sometimes when the maki had a funny taste and the unagi was quite tough.

Anyone tried Korea Gardens?

DG, where is Neo?

And the Japanese in the buffet at Caravan is nowhere near nice OR authentic.... the rest of the food is fine, but the nori rolls were bleuuurgh.

Moon Palace is no doubt one of the places e46M3 referred to earlier, being run by Koreans, but its Japanese food is still really good (as is the Korean!).

I don't know if the "Red Rose" still exists but we had some half decent chinese food in it.

Location wise: travelfrom Grand Hamad Boulevard , past souk Al-Asiri and turn right at the end. It was on the right hand side. Downstairs was formica topped tables but upstairs was very good. I always said that it would make a great nightclub.
