Child dies in School bus in DPS

By Kareempvabdul

Today children returned late from School (DPS -MIS),the reason being a child was found dead in the school bus. From what I heard, the child dozed off in the bus during her morning trip. The driver did not notice and the child was left in the bus. They found her in the afternoon ,it should have been the heat in the bus that killed her. She was just 4 years old. Did anyone hear about this ?

happy happy ! this was not an isolated event at this school . Poor Sarah was not the first child forgotten in the bus there .

I hope that there will be a strict punishment .

I am agreed with you school transportation should be changed around here .

Dedicated -well trained people should drive those buses who understand the challenges of their job .

Accidents happen - that is true . But this was more than a simple accident . There was a row of negligence and there were warning signs neglected which lead to this tragedy .

By Happy Happy• 26 May 2010 16:12

.....alma wad, both of us agree this school needs discipline, but I do hope the scapegoat isn't going to be the driver, and the rest is buried until another accident happens,

....nicaq25, exactly my point, the other day, a boy stepping down the stairs of the bus, the driver reversed, thinking the boy was off, and the boy's head banged against the brick wall!

By nicaq25• 26 May 2010 15:39

God forbid, if similar thing will happen to another school, do you think shutting down that school would solve the problem?

Although we put all the blame to the driver, school & authority, there'd be nothing much to do but to look for some ways such incident won't happen again.

By alma wad• 26 May 2010 14:29
alma wad

Qatar has its own authorities and they will decide on . I have nothing to say about it .But the odds of closing down the school are high. I think

It is medium sized school and besides its horrifying children safety records it has its own academic values . I admit .

But all of it can not be arranged by " ok we can not bring back the little girl - so let'talk about another topic and we promise it won't happen again "

The crime of negligence was very big so the punishment must be also something equal to the crime .

By Happy Happy• 25 May 2010 22:54
Happy Happy

....alma wad, very good point, but what good would come out of shutting down one of the most populated schools in Qatar? Such decision may create a bigger problem for all those kids who have no other educational alternative in Qatar, and it won't bring back our little angel either.

There is one good may come out of this tragedy, (as ruthless as it may sound) is to revisit school regulations to curb the everyday unreported school accidents, which I only get to hear about from my teacher friends.

By alma wad• 25 May 2010 13:14

It seems that the ministry of education withdraws the license from another school for minor issues .

http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/qatar/4360-dont-shut-school-say-oes-parents.html

If they do so then other schools can be shut down as well . This school in question for example .

By s_isale• 25 May 2010 07:35

Looks like there are some vested interests who wants the school to be shut down or taken over. So much of narrow minded people around here.

By Happy Happy• 24 May 2010 16:48

....alma wad, very true. We can only hope the investigating committee is wise enough to seek permanent corrective measures and embed them into regulations for all schools to adhere to, rather than responding to angry calls for this school's shutdown, in which case thousands of innocent kids would be stranded.

Sarah's death is indeed an eye opener for all!!! This incident is purely due to negligence by the school management and the driver. It is really sad a precious life is lost due to mere negligence by the authorities... When parents come with grievances, the school management should have positive response and look into their needs rather than ignoring them as passing comments like “move your child to another school if you are not happy here”. Whoever responsible for this incident must be severely punished and corrective actions must be taken by all schools to avoid such situations in future .. not only in transport … other facilities too.

At least I hope the managements in different school will take this matter seriously and look into to providing best education without compromising on quality.

I heard the transport manager was terminated today. In my opinion the Principal should be given more authority in making decisions and she should fight to get things done what she thinks is more suitable for the children's welfare.

After reading the news i feel soooo bad about the baby who died such a horrific death. The managment is to be blamed no one else, for their negligence in taking care of the kids. The principal should resign. I am feeling sooo bad and helpless to do anything. May allah pacify the grief of the parents.

no amount of discussion will return the lost life.

What is needed now is for the parents to be united in voicing their concerns but do it with the school management in person and not in forum. This is a very unfortunate incident which IMHO, is a lapse in judgment of the driver. Secondary assurance steps should be taken by concerned authorities.

Dear parents,

Being a father of a student in DPS,

I would kindly request the parents to keep the momentum to be gathered and in touch with the school management ( to be confirmed the school principal is a part of management or not as she told in her last meeting).

Annoyed by hearing irresponsible answers from the principal as well as the school management during the meeting and being an Indian school they should realize such incident was happened in any part of india, definitely the principal or the school management will not be in a position to attend the meeting since they might had manhandled by the public or/and school will be in a demolished stage. They should thank god for both are in good condition.

Very much concerned about the facilities given by the school which affect the safety of our kids as well as the lack of communication and planning. Since the principal is not the integral part of the school as she told, we must have to get a clear answer from the school management who is answerable/responsible to us for the questions raised due to the heart breaking incident. Or she has to step down to get a proper responsible person can take such situations more sensibly.

My little girl went to same school for summer camp in the last two years .The camp was surprisingly good .They tried their best to entertain and educate the kids . That is why I was shocked when after the camp she told me that once she woke up and she found herself alone in the bus . She was playing a little bit and drank some water when the driver came back ... and even then he did not notice her - she had to scream for being noticed ...

It sounds as it was not the first case that a child was forgotten in the bus .

All this story gives me a chill - my little child was very lucky then that the driver came back .

However we liked their summer camp - we will not send our child again there .

My sincere sympathy for the family . She was a real lovely cute four year old . I feel terrible at her loss though I do not know her in person it feels as she was someone very close to me .

The school has its plus points and in many areas it fares well, better than most other schools in Qatar. Changing schools is not a solution cos in many of them situations are worse. anybody with basic sense would check the bus. in fact when the bus came to pickup the kids today the driver had a few pencils that the kids had left behind yesterday clearly indicating that he had checked the bus. earlier anything left in the bus would be at the same place where it was left. if the drivers had been so particular 4 days back they wouldnt have missed Sarah.

Also please one and all, consider a scenario where the school is asked to close down. can u imagine where the 3500 odd students would go??? pls lets all work together to make a stronger & safer school...

You're righ Jack. But the ultimate reaponsibility will be of the villa owner as in case of any casuality the loss of propery and belongings would be of the villa owner and not the cook. The villa owner need not turn off the gas everyday, but shud check and ensure that the cook does it without fail. A system should be devised by the villa owner for it.

In this case, what kind of a system did the school or the transport manager had to ensure that all children arriving the school by school bus (whether school owned or operated by contractor) have got out of the bus.The answer would be simply NO. This is just a simple concept of forecast, planning and crisis management. Has this been considered for the safety of the children arriving the school daily.

Jack I agree Driver was not proactive...we cant expect an underpaid driver to be so sincere to his job...but a person with minimum commonsense will check the bus especially when there is no attendant in this bus. How can you expect a driver to drive and at the same time check if the kids are fighting inside the bus or if a child throw up in the morning??

It’s the Transport in charge who is fully responsible for deploying a bus without an attendant. If he had done his job..this would have not happened!

By s_isale• 20 May 2010 10:59
s_isale

There was no attendant appointed in the bus since it was hired from outside. A teacher was doubling up as the attendant.

Why should the driver take the cop for it? It is the transportation manager who has to take the responsibility. What else is his job?

By anonymous• 20 May 2010 10:16

FS how can the management arrange attendant at the last hour at 4 in the morning? Its not impossible but its not generally practicable.

But isnt it the driver's job to do the attendant's job when the Attendant doesnt show up?

Why nobody is blaming the driver? Its just beyond me!!!

ITS SO DAMN STRAIGHT FORWARD. ITS A GENERAL SAFETY RULE.

Just like the person cooking has to check if the Cooking Gas is turned off when he/she leaves the house.....its not the Villa Owner's responsibility!!!

I just want only one answer....from the Driver....

Why the F did he not check the bus before abandoning it?

Maybe some kid might have left behind his tiffin box or bag or something.....

I want him to answer that question. and that too in front of all the parents.

Checking the kids seats is done by all parents/adults when ever any kids leave the car......this is too damn irresponsible....and people are not even blaming the driver ....all are blaming the School Management.

The management can appoint 10 people behind each van but it can also happen that one fine day for various reason these 10 people might not turn up then what? Driver just closes the van and walks away?

THIS WAS THE DIRVER'S RESPONSIBILITY which he failed to do....more so since he knew there was no attendent on the Van that day.

By DANIELLI• 20 May 2010 08:54

IF A PRINCIPAL CAN SAY A WORD LIKE NOT RESPONSIBLE, IT IS CLEAR THAT THE PRINCIPAL DOES NOT HAVE ADEQUATE LEADERSHIP QUALITIES OR PROBABLY THERE COULD BE TOO MANY BOSSESS WITHIN THE SCHOOL WHICH LEADS TO CERTAIN COMPLICATIONS ON DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS.SOME KIND OF BUTTERING THE PRINCIPAL BY THE STAFF COULD DO WONDERS IN THAT KIND OF SCENARIO.THE ROLES OF THE TEACHERS SHOULD ALSO BE REVIEWED WITH THEIR QUALIFICATIONS AS NON COMPETENT TEACHERS WOULD ADOPT WAYS OF BOSSING AROUND TO KEEP THINGS UNDER THEIR CONTROL, THEREBY DIRECTING WITHOUT AUTHORITY.

Voldemort - Transport has been one of the most criticised parts of MES. See this :

http://www.fixmes.com/forum/index.php?topic=22.0

There are threads on QL itself on the same, and even local newspapers ran stories about that.

The level of carelessness varies from one school to another, on various topics. I heard that BPS is doing pretty good on the transport side, mainly because the principal himself is present while the students are alighting or boarding the buses in a fairly congested area. There are also common sense rules implemented there, like keeping the doors open on the buses for couple of hours.

Condolences to the family of the little one, who paid the price for the folly of others.

The blame dear friends should be solely placed at the doorstep of the Transport Manager. Inspite of repeatedly complaining to him about the mini vans he has not bothered to change them to buses. the children travel to and fro in extremely cramped conditions. there is no place in these vans for an attendant. its packed with kids. he has no other work assigned to him. could he not enforce the said "rules". could he not himself check each vehicle before it passes the school gates.. what about that driver??? how can u absolve him of the blame? he was just driving a minivan. even before he locked it and went off for his beauty sleep could he not just check the vehicle once??? it would have taken just 5 minutes and it would have saved her life. due to this incident the entire school has suffered. its reputation so painstakingly built by its teachers and principal is in dust. call the management to answer questions. no use blasting the already grief stricken principal.

"After reading the heart-wrenching story of Sarah Gazdhar, a KG-1 student of DPS-MIS dying of heat and asphyxiation in a school bus in yesterday’s newspapers, Mohamed Rizwan, a Sri Lankan parent called Gulf Times to share his good luck, all the while thanking God profusely for sparing his family of the trauma of bereavement."

and yet many are still insisting to enroll there! So who's fault?

The incident is an isolated case of lapse of judgment of the driver, which resulted in a very tragic loss of life.

The best move is for parents to be united and make sure that no such incident happen again in the future. Coordination with school authorities (I said coordination, not putting the blame) will make good result, hopefully! No need to speculate to what happened. I think the official investigation have already concluded what happened.

Make a separate thread for the other issues of discontent about school facilities. Airing it here does not help the bereaved family! Condolence to the family!

my heart goes out to the parents of Sarah and i cant stop my tears looking at the pic of the angelic face....I am a mother too and my son goes to one of the prominent Indian schools DMIS here and I am happy with his transportation facilities as the driver and helper are both very concerned and caring towards kids ( as advised by my son).

Suddenly this incident has woken up all the parents for the safety of their kids...and all the blames go to the drivers helpers and the school...In this case i feel it is the fault of the school for not providing enuff facilities but what about all the parents who travel with the children in front seats and no belts...? I have instructed my son and the helper to ensure that he is wearing his seat belt all the time but i have seen that a lot of kids dont and the streets of qatar have no regards for school buses.. forget about other vehicles.

we also have to teach our kids to be vigilant and train them to deal with emergency situations like this (for example blow the horn if you are locked in a vehicle. or train them to open the doors and windows of the buses

(they obviously shldnt/cant do this around the driver n helper)

the schools also need to have somne kind of tracking systems in case a child is absent..the parents need to advise the school if the child is absent every single time ( just a phone call or email )and if the child is absent without notice then they need to contact the parent to ensure all is OK and the child did not board the bus.

LET US ALL GET TOGETHER AND WHILE WE PRAY FOR SARAH, WE ALSO ENSURE THAT THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.....! TO ANYONE

Rude attitude of Transport In Charge - why being not questioned. Why prinicpal suddenly relaised this after loss of little angel. anywaz it is diffcult to trust such words

from my point view as preacutionary measure i will change the school of course i will not think of DPS-MIS anymore.

SEC should see to that the school licence should be withdrawn unless a proper protocal is set.

Most of the schools are run for money making only. One feel like laughing at the lies that the so called schools have churned out in todays newspapers.

None of them can provide shaded parking for their buses. How can they when they dont have space to provide more class rooms even.

Anyway majority of the schools dont have such a system in place.

Some schools force students to walk half a kilometer or in the scorching sun to their homes since the driver is not willing to take the interior roads.

If you talk to the so called transportation managers they shout back at you. Their attitude is take it or leave it, thats all what we can do.

Nowadays the attendants in the buses are also pretty high handed, some are not even willing to get up from their seat in the bus.

The note from the Principal is definitely a move in the right direction, but this is not the only issue at the school. We still need to strongly voice our concerns about other issues related to safety of children , their hygeine, their academics and so forth. God forbid if there is a fire incident in the school, how are they going to evacuate the children from the porta cabins. The corridors are so narrow. They should not wait for another tragedy to happen to look into that direction. They should conduct mock fire drills and educate the children as well as teachers. They should ensure that the toilets are cleaned continuously the way we see in Malls in Qatar. During the parent teacher meeting last week, I just happened to climb the stairs in the area where we have Class I, and even before I reached the top stair the odour from the toilets was disgusting. Regarding academics also, it should not be dependant on the teacher. Sometimes the teachers are good and sincere sometimes they are not. I have heard of a teacher who reacted to a parent that it's not her responsibility to make sure that the child has written notes in class, when the parent complained that the child has not been writing any notes since 1 week. For God sake, what's her responsibility then !!! DPS should set standards for a uniform way of teaching too, and if any teacher comes out above those guidelines well that would be great, but atleast teacher's should not go below those standards. From my understanding there will be a huge turnout of parents who will be present today, we need to get them to have the Principal and if possible responsible people from the Management present. We will not get this strength of parents to be present at any later date.

SUCH A TIME IS THE SADDEST FOR ANY PARENTS SO FIRST OF ALL WE (ALSO BEING THE PARENTS OF 3 AT MES) CONDOLE THE DEATH OF AN ANGEL IN A SCHOOL VAN.

SECONDLY WE DEMAND JUSTICE TO THIS FAMILY AS WELL AS DEMAND FROM THE CONCERNING AUTHORITIES TO TAKE STRONG ACTIONS AGAINST SCHOOLS VOILATING THE SAFTY NORMS AND CONCIDERING THE SCHOOL AS MONEY MAKING MACHINE ONLY.

THE SITUATIONS OF STUDENTS (SPECIALLY KIDS) IN THE TRANPORT OF ALL THE SCHOOLS ARE PATHETIC.

I think we should voice our concerns about the porta cabins, toilets, air conditioning systems, emergency power back ups etc. These are some of the points that we should highlight to the management and try to get them commit on a definite time frame to resolve it. I've noticed that the insulation material used while constructing the porta cabins are not good enough to provide adequate thermal & acoustic insulation. The capacity of airconditioner inside the class room are not adequate. There should be a proper system to maintain the toilets clean (The children also should be taught how to use such public toilets). And they should set a definite date to which they will shift to a proper school building. They should also account for the special fees they collect, why do they take so much money when the facilities they promised to offer like the swimming pool, after school hours activites (batmindon, dancing etc for which they charge QR200 per student for 8 classes a month), increasing strrength in classes etc etc...

Dear Parents,

The entire DPS-MIS fraternity is devastated by the tragic and unfortunate incident costing a precious life in our family yesterday. We empathies with the family of Sarah for the irreparable loss of their beloved daughter. We all mourn with them. All that we say may sound hollow in this hour of calamity but we wish to reassure all of you who have reposed trust and faith in us and entrusted your precious children in our care that we stand committed to providing safety and security to your children at any cost.

The school management has further stream lined and fine- tuned the transportation system.

· No school bus will leave the school campus without a helper.

· After dropping children the buses will be allowed to leave only after physical verification by a supervisor.

· On return journey too, the buses will not leave the school unless the supervisor allows after verification.

· All buses will maintain an attendance sheet.

· For Nursery and Prep, the school will inform the parents by 8 am incase of any absentee, for verification.

·The school reception will remain functional to answer any queries between 2 pm and 5 pm.

·Once again, driver’s mobile numbers will be provided.

With regards

S.Mattu

Principal

Atlast some action from the school on atleast some of the problems. Lets assume this is a good start in the right direction. It is very unfortunate that it cost the life of a little girl for the school to open their eyes. What could have been solved by simply listening to parents' complaints has escalated to this level. Hope the school maintains the same tone in future too whenevr a parent raises some issue of concern.

There is a transport manager in the school. Just try to reach him on the phone. He would never answer. He is the real Sheikh. To get any job done from him, we just have to go to His Excellency and wait until he shows up at his cabin. I think school should employ people who are fit for the job. He should know that he is doing a very critical job and therefore should have the right attitude.

I Hope everyoone came to know today that this news i very much true.

//this school has been having transport problems from day1 onwards...my neighbours daughter studying in nurserey was sent in different buses 3 times within 2 weeks even when the child wa wearing her ID Card with the bus no. written on it.

when the mother tried to complaint to the principal to meet the principal you have to take prior appoinment , the phones are answered only by her secretary for any response only thru e-mail....i never knew the princi of this school was given the status of Qatar sheikh ...she is so busy that she cant even meet the parents..God only knows what her job description is .....

//they have so much of unusual rules ..the driver is not supposed to enter the compound of the school....they say the nanny or the compunder takes the children to their classes while yesterdays incident is a sheer example of their irresponsibleness .still some parents see small children here and there not knowing what to do and where to go....

//the bathrooms are in such a pathetic condittion that the the children do not even go to the toilet even if it is urgent .....there is no water also in the toilet ...thought delhi was a part of india where we use water to wash private parts unlike the westeners....

its been one month the first standard student have not yet given thier timetables and the poor souls have to take almost 15-20 books everyday....

i dontknow why the SEC is not seeing all these and taking any action

It is just a part of pulling strings together by the school saying that the teacher was absent. There are many buses in which there are no conductors, even in buses where small kids travel. And they never cared when we complaint.

By House wife• 18 May 2010 18:46

I agree with u Usha, the school should revise their transport policy and amend it in the favour of the children's welfare, if not finally our poor kids will be the victims. All the parents should write down their complaints to the Principal of DPS-MIS and send a copy to Mrs.Latifa- visiting officer for private schools in SEC. I wonder how DPS managed to get the licence to run too many classrooms in porta cabins and let a school bus operate without a monitor? The driver should have been instructed to inform the school if the supervisor is absent and find a replacement. I hope the MIS management takes this as a good lesson and urge them to read all comments posted on QL neccessary steps to make sure that these types of errors will not affect the safety of our children in the school.

By House wife• 18 May 2010 18:45
House wife

ntasa it is not the driver but the management of the school. How come they let a bus operate without a monitor? The driver....drives the bus with full concentration on the road or monitoring the children? If they have instructed the driver to inform the school and find a replacement for the absent teacher (monitor) we wouldn't have been posting our comments like this today. Finally the parents lost their beautiful girl of the careless act of the money minded people

Were lessons learnt following a similar incident in another country? With hind sight, this tragic loss could have been prevented.

Someone will no doubt investigate the matter to establish exactly what happened on the day. Then and only then will lessons be learnt.

Most risks are adequately controlled by implementing a comprehensive Health & Safety system. Risk Assessments enable one to anticipate what could go wrong and to put controls in place to minimise or completely eliminate the likelihood of it going wrong. Is this a requirement on all schools?

The School Driver .. is definitely responsible and if weren't his negiligence, one little angel's life could've been saved.

but the whole SYSTEM; the School Management, The Transport Companies and THE PARENTS too are responsible in some way.

-Why there was No Attendant onboard?

-Why there's no attendance system for on/off boarding children?

-Why the poor parents didn't confirm here arrival at school (since she was already off for past few days due to sickness)

- Why Parents do not keep a close-knit circle of kids friends and families to keep updates abt their children daily life, well being and depar/arrival at school.

can't imagine what'd 4-1/2 year kid could do in such situation. .. and it is so sad and so tragic.

what's important is what we've learned from it.

the education ministry, the schools, the transport companies and most importantly .. THE PARENTS >?>

This incident is due to the negligence of school management. It is their responsibility to ensure that the buses takes the kids at least upto 5th std should be accompanied by a lady bus attendant. The greedy school management takes no step in appointing any one as bus attendant even in rented buses where there is no control. I feel government of Qatar should take a strong step in implementing a law for bus attendant and its time for each of us to join and raise our protest against this.

I am totally shocked and sad about this incident. This is a very popular Indian school in Doha and they should have been more alert about the safety of the students. Fault goes to everyone(school, bus company, driver etc.) should be held responsible for this young death because this cannot be replaced by anything else. May God should help Gazdhar family to go through this very difficult state. I have been in Doha for the last five years and thank God my husband drives my son every day to school, despite of his tight work timings. We were in Wakrah last year and he had to drive nearly 140 kilometers every day to go back and forth to school and work. Hi Usha, I will be there and have invited other parents whom I know for the meeting at 6pm in the school tomorrow.I think we could complain directly to SEC Private Schools Office as given at: http://www.english.education.gov.qa/section/sec/education_institute/pso

Even my two daughters are studying in the same school and my elder one started from Nursery(when DPS started initially) and is in the same school for almost 10 years now. Eventhough they take heavy fees, the infrastructure is pathetic and they have added so many new portacabins recently reducing the already limited space for children to play around. The air conditioners in the class rooms are not working properly and my daughters always come back from school with head ache!In addition to that every day there is power failure to add to this.

Also, they are luring the children to pay QR50 to get their photo in some souvenir without any proper circular!Few years back they have collected fund by selling tickets for building fund and don't know what happened to that money! In their website and in all Annual day programs since then, they are showing the building which is under construction and in the actual site, there is no sight of contruction going on... DPS is no more Delhi Public School, they should amend it to Delhi Portacabin School!

The list of complaints are endless...these are only few of them!

Let us do something before some other disaster happens again!

Strictest action should be taken against DPS (school) management by local authorities & supreme education council for not properly laying off safety code of conducts on children’s using school transport; neglecting a child in a school bus for more than 4 hours which caused a death of 4 year old sweet girl. This is a clear violation of children safety; where was the bus attendant? Apart from a bus driver there is always a bus attendant who’s job is make sure the child reaches the class room.

I heard about this thing on my child who is studying in this school (DPS-MIS), that the supporting staffs are just living on the ROOF TOP of the JUNIOR WING only which is NOT ALLOWED. When I went for PTA meeting last week, it was true coz I saw a lady going up on the 2nd floor of junior wing. I followed secretly and I saw they are living there. Poor fellows. The school is earning much money from this and yet they cannot afford to give fully facilities for the school and for the EMPLOYEES. Does the Ministry of LABOR knows about this? Its not the School's Fault....Its the Driver's negligence...

The driver can go and ram the bus into a wall ...how can that be School's fault?

Maybe the school is generally careless but this incident is outright the driver's fault and the Police have to arrest him the soonest before he repeats the negligence with some other kid.

Bottom line is the driver is not fit to drive. He cannot take care of his passengers.

DPS school authority is very careless, they dont assure safety of small kids, this incident is its example, they dont have sufficient number of school buses so they hire private buses which dont follow the rules meant for the school buses, sometimes there is no attendant in the bus, there is no school name over the bus, nowhere written that this bus is for school use because after dropping kids they use buses for other job, government should impose strict rules for the kids safety and its implementation. whats the moral responsibility of school, to earn money only????????

It says in the paper "The tragedy is one of its kind in Doha"...I think its the 3rd case.

The passengers are the drivers responsibility especially when they are tiny kids and the driver has to look out for them if there are no attendant or teachers on board.

The driver has to be put in jail or made to pay a heavy blood money. Only then will these lazy bums learn.

The crime is equivalent to running over a kid on the road.

There should be no mercy for this kind of negligent behavior.

I feel this is a gross misconduct by School Management as theyshould ensure that there is checking of bus and also some kind of system to ensure that the child who boards the bus reaches school safely by way of cheklist or a simple tick by the driver and a bus attendant at school end. If they do not have the finaacial resources why they charge high fees from parents. if they have lack of funds why don't they ask parents to volunteer as bus attendent turn by turn.

why there is no action taken by authorities to restrict admissions without infrastructure in place.

Please they need to wake up before suh things happen.

My condolenses to the family and may Allah give them all the strength and courage in such times.

The Supreme education council should look into this matter very seriously. Recently this school is building porta-cabins on top of parta-cabins to accomodate more and more students and because of this their quality of education is coming down. They should have instructed that all drivers check their vechiles before locking the vechile. This happened to my daughter also once in the same school few years back and the driver had noticed it before locking the doors and he left her back to the school.

Of what i have been hearing, this is a basic rule of transporting, for the matter even goods. You take 24 packages and you deliver them all.

Should i believe they don't count how many they picked from different location and how many they delivered at the school and similar exercise for the pick from school to home etc. If they are or any other school is NOT doing this basic requirement, (THEY SHOULD BE CLOSED immediately).

This tragic happening should send an alert to the Ministry and or SEC to audit the procedure of transportation. Someone has paid a very heavy price and if we don’t learn from it than it is more horrible.

Sometime back, I had personally called up DPS to complain for a bus loaded with kids driving like a most talked 4WD.

But this incident has taken a SERIOUS dimension.

I pray for the parents to bear this time of a very very tough test with utmost patience and acceptance.

Your child with the Mercy of Allah is up in the best of place (Insha'Allah.

Although unfortunate I pray events like this will trigger authorities to be more proactive rather than reactive.

Running school buses without an attendant is illegal.

Not picking up kids from their residences is also illegal.

Some schools have collection points where the students are asked to come away from their place of residence. Till date no action has been forthcoming on the part of school authorities because nothing untoward has happened.

Isnt it the duty of the school authorities to make sure that their drivers pick up and drop the students at their place of residence?

It is time for the various school managements to wake up and take action. They are playing with the lives of the kids.

They say running school buses without an attendant is an offence. There are no attendants in many of the buses. A teacher or a driver is not an attendant. Penny pinching ------

Cudnt even sleep yesterday night since my girl goes to the same school in KG2...cant imagine what the girl went through. Was at the school for PTA last week and is really upset with the school building. It is dangerous to accommodative so many children in such pathetic cabins. Cant even do a proper evacuation in case of a rescue and the porta cabins is not at all safe in any aspect.

Really the Principal and teachers are good and do their best to manage with the limited funds but it is the top management people who are just money miners. There should be some real good action against them for being so irresponsible, failing to set standards for their bus services and running a school in such buildings...class strength has gone from 26 average to up to 47 in some classes. Kids are forced to bring in desks from other classes and shift classes for language hours. and they sit so cramped on tiny benches and desks, even in higher grades. The window ACs are not working properly and is not sufficient in the ambient conditions..and it was hot even during the night, dont know how they expect kids to survive through the noon hours.

It is high time some standards be set for schools in Qatar. It is some young lives at stake and the parents pay more than they can really afford to ensure their kids the best. Still this is what we get.

My heart felt condolences and may god give enough strength to the family to bear the loss.

s-isale...what has the health of the child got to do with the tragedy at hand. Can the lapse on the part of the driver or the school be condoned if she has not fully recovered.

Are you somehow related to soemone in the school who should be worried now because of this incident and trying to find some escape route on his/her behalf. I hope not.

looks like the child had been absent for a few days due to illness. The question is was the child fully recovered before she was sent back to school.

Many parents insist on sending their kids to school even when they know that their ward is not well, despite repeated requests from school authorities to not send the kids if they are not well. Why?

By anonymous• 18 May 2010 08:25

There is another thing which I have not understood. If a child doesn't show up at school without any prior information, usually school authorities call up the parents and inform them of the child's abscence. What about the class teacher, did he or she also didn't notice that the child was absent. There is something grossly wrong here...........

The f#$%^* Indian school managements in Doha!!!

The only thing they do with zeal and enthusiasm every year is petition the Supreme council to increase school fees.

They pay the teachers peanuts, do not hire enough staff, try to get the over worked teachers to perform other tasks too.

No point in blaming the contract company's low paid driver. Strictly speaking, it is not his job to check the bus after the end of the trip. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SCHOOL.

If they had been willing to spend another 600 QR on a bus attendant , this beautiful child would have been alive today.

(The principal had the audacity to say that because it is a small bus , we did not have an attendant.)

This is a wakeup call to all penny pinching Indian school managements. And I really really hope the child's family will sue the school.

God give the bereaved family the strength to bear the loss.

I have no words to express my anguish…negligence of one individual cost the life of a small kid….this happened before in Dubai..a parent himself forgot the child in the car and after few hrs the child died….

why didn’t they instruct the driver to confirm that there is no one in the bus before they park the bus…it wont take one mint for him to do that…

My Son is studying in that school for last 6 yrs..all these yrs there was not even a single day without an attendant in the bus….

May her soul rest in peace..

that assists the driver, like an overseer in the bus for the safety of kids to & from school. A routine checkp-up everytime the school bus upload & unload the kids. I'm sure it's not a hard thing to do.

Now that there's another accident happened I hope the school administration, irregardless of which school it would be, should look up to also the welfare of their pupils not only inside the school campus but like wise including school bus/transport.

This is really important as there was again one precious life lost due to negligence.

The school is highly irresponsible. They do not have proper assignment of duties or provision to replacement in case absence of a particular employee. This just shows how careless is the school. Government must take this matter in their hands and set an example for other schools who think education as money minting machine. Top level authorities of the school should be punished or deported.

Actually there was a school teacher who used to double up as conductor of the bus to make sure that every student gets on and off, she didn't take the bus yesterday and the driver didn't bother to check after dropping off the students.

and the school's also at fault for not briefing the driver what is being a school bus driver is all about...

It's an irresponsible act.

By sepsep• 18 May 2010 07:11

the bus driver should be the one to blame.

so as the school for having such irresponsible driver.

a school bus driver's job is not only to drive a bus. it's also to check the bus and on it's passengers.

what a stupid fella.

At least he should be checking the bus and his passengers(the students) some times. besides they're just kids.

He is the one to blame for that.

He didn't care about his passengers...

He don't know his job. (maybe he thought he was actually driving a bulldozer)

Due to the huge intake of students, the school has not been keeping up the standard it had initially. My friend says when her husband went to pick up his daughter he saw a small child crying in front of the school. When he asked her the reason, she told him , she doesnt remember her bus number. So he picked her up and went to the office. There were a lot of school authorities around, no one paid attention. It is scary to think that our children do not have any safety in this school. A lot of our complaints are just ignored. Is there any way we can get some action taken against the school? There keep building porto cabins anywhere and everywhere, even now there is construction going on in the nursery area. How can the children be safe? Can we complain to Supreme Council ?

I can't imagine what the parents are feeling! The climate is nothing new in Qatar and there should already be protocols to ensure that this doesn't happen. I remember even in my younger years the driver getting up at the end of the ride and doing a once over of the entire bus.

Truly terrible and my condolences to the family.

This news seems true and school has expressed condolences and a holiday tomorrow. Really the school authorities need to be more responsible especially when they charge way too much in terms of special fee and all when compared to other schools in Doha. The facilities tey lack and the amount of negligence shown is too much. There is no conductor in most buses, even the ones in which small kids travel, and even after complaining to the school many times, there is no action. Many buses are hired and are driven by irresponsible drivers who dont care about anything. Another issue is the school building..which has been sooo long under planning and fund raising stage. What is the management of the school doing happily running their own businesses and draining all the money from the parents without giving anything back to the school. The school management should be held responsible for the extremely poor porta cabins in which they teach the junior wing and the lack of responsibility in issues related to school transport etc. Its time parents come together and initiate some action.
