A center in Qatar to "cure" homosexuality????

nadinenana
By nadinenana

I just don't believe it...the other day, my friends and I were discussing some strange things that you only find in Qatar. One of them mentioned that due to the large number of homosexuals in Qatar that the govt. set up some kind of center or institution (apparently this building is unmarked) where parents drop off their gay/lesbian children/teenagers to rehabilitate them...is this true!???? This sounds so absurd! but then again, WE ARE IN QATAR!!!! loool, Anyway is this just an urban legend???? Anyone heard of this story before???

My slant on this is that the expert psychologist could help the family realise that at the end of the day, the gay person is their flesh and blood and perhaps help them out of denial and towards acceptance.

Many people who have reconciled their sexuality with their religion or social life and what have you don't really care about what homophobes say or believe in. They don't live for them. They don't care whether they understand what the word GAY means, beyond the sexual context, or not. They understand that those homophobes not only do they fear the word gay, but also fear the chance that if they actually talk with some gay people they will find out that some of them are really good people inside.

Homophobes don't have the ability to look into a person's heart or exert an effort to learn a person or respect the differences. They are often quick to judge, hate and verbally abuse or sometimes physically abuse gay people. They often have "smart" comments and a remedy for homosexuality when the science itself doesn't know a single cause for homosexuality, but homophobes do.

Mind you that some of those homophobes are the same ones that would have atheist friends, whom they might take out to dinner or a party. (Atheism and homosexuality are both prohibited in Islam) but for those homophobes, it is probably ok to walk with an atheist and accept his differences and not walk with a gay man or a woman. Can you spell hypocrisy ? Some of the homophobes engage in pre-marital sex in when it is not allowed in their religion. Some of them were partying and drinking during the new years eve when Gaza was being massacred. You would think that they would care enough about their "brothers and sisters" or even donating some money, but no.. they are too hypocritical to do any good deeds in their lives. They'd rather find a gay man or a gay woman and bash them. That's more fun to do for them.

And at the end they expect the world to listen to their hateful stupid opinions when they start quoting God or Mohammed (PBUH) and start telling people what is right and what is wrong. TELL YOURSELF BEFORE YOU TELL ME.

I do feel upset when people are so homophobic.....

It must be so bad for your self-esteem coping with your sexuality and then a load of aggressive/ignorant homophobes wade in....

britexpat: it would make sense to me that the "needs" of the gay individual would trump the needs of the family in many cases. If the family can learn to accept a gay offspring, then, of course, all efforts should be made to come to some sort of common ground. However, not all families are willing to accept a gay member and therefore is could be dangerous to get the parents involved.

By ex.ex.expat• 27 Aug 2010 19:03
ex.ex.expat

the families would run counter to protecting the client or patient. What do you do when the family itself is the risk?

By britexpat• 27 Aug 2010 17:46
britexpat

Sadly, the same is occurring in the UK.. Social workers "put the needs of the child first" and don't always involve the parents.

Parents must be informed and involved in any issues their child is facing.

Genesis, good that people have realized that help is needed. But how can all that work if the family is not involved? I think that some of the problems may result from the family environment. Anyway, i wish them the best of luck.

chat and social plans? So childish.

Genesis, that is an interesting bit of information. I can understand the need for providing a "rehab" center to help these people get their lives on track but still am curious about how the actual cases of homosexuality are treated in a family. One of the blokes I work with is obviously gay, but his family just arranged his wedding a few months ago. Poor chap looked like scared to death on his wedding night. There is another bloke at work from a very prominent family whose oldest daughter and son are both gay by all appearances. In their cases, it is extremely obvious to anyone who would meet them. Neither have married and their father and mother seem to not be pushing them to marry. I wonder, though, how the parents handle the questions from others.

I am also curious about what efforts are underway to educate the parents and bring them on board with a more humane way of handling these issues within the family.

According to a friend who works as a social worker in one of the government's boys schools , they receive enormous cases of bullying, molestation, gang rapes, glue sniffing addiction & chewing tobacco addiction that's beyond their control. Unlike other societies , social workers here try to avoid involving the parents as much as they can. As there is no proper education or awareness in dealing with those disorders within the local community

I guess many of you by now realize that victims of molestation can be guilty in the eyes of society here.

Thus, having a social rehabilitation center here is essential

rishi: We don't find things like calculus in the animal world either. Is that an aberration as well?

Yes, I believe that preferring men over women is just like preferring blonds over brunettes. What's the difference?

By anonymous• 27 Aug 2010 14:16
anonymous

epicurean, do we find homosexuality in animals as well? if yes, please put the link here.

if not, then could you please explain why this sexual preference is in human being only?

finally, can you really compare this sexual preference with other preferences like the ones you have mentioned?

By epicurean• 27 Aug 2010 14:10

cameraguy: Ok. I tried it. The absorbent nature of the cornflakes leads a degree of logistical difficulty which needs to be overcome...

By epicurean• 27 Aug 2010 14:05
epicurean

rishi: I believe that some men are born preferring tall women over short women, some men prefer lighter skin over darker skin, and some men are born preferring men over women. I believe that homosexuality has existed for as long as we have writing about such things. To call it an "aberration" implies that straight people have some sort of moral monopoly on sex.

By anonymous• 27 Aug 2010 13:57
anonymous

epicurean, there has to be some background or cause as to why some people turn out to gays..before refuting these analogies you should put up your take on the same..

or is it that you dont accept it as an aberration at all?

By anonymous• 27 Aug 2010 13:51

Yeah, so that's that then. All settled. But, don't close this topic yet. I'm waiting for Epicurean to return with the results of her experiment.

Is social rehabilitation center which is part of Qatar Foundation that was opened recently

http://www.src-qa.org/

Their main purpose is rehabilitation for drug addiction, sexual abuses & personality disorders

It was linked with curing homosexuality because of a "lost in translation" press release

http://66.132.241.65/Display_news.asp?section=local_news&subsection=Qatar+News&month=February2010&file=Local_News201002243753.xml

When in fact they offer support & shelter for homosexuals who've been outcast by their families

i totally agree with ruby, after getting mature enough, they still think of not being straight and like to be homosexual then, they should be given respect from their families, friends, the society...

By anonymous• 27 Aug 2010 11:15

having gone through some literatures on homosexuality, i have inferred that this aberration may be catagorised, either physiological - related to the hormones and psycological - caused by suppression of sexual urge.

its evident that hormone related irregularities cannot be treated by drugs. we need to accept the sexual orientation of the person and get along.

on the other hand, if the natural instincts are abnormally suppressed, they tend to surface in a distorted way and the result is homosexuality, weird sexual fetish, sadistic approach to sex etc.

this probably can be cured by rehab environments and councelling.

i may be incorrect, but, thats what i understood.

if it helps them come to terms with who they really are then nothing wrong with that. sometimes young people are very impressionable and might have some struggle in finding their true identity. if at the end they find themselves and realize whether they are straight or not then hope their families will just learn to accept them for who they are and love them just the same.
