i've been noticing some cats smelling or sniffing or feeling the car bumpers with their mouth or nose...since young age... but never bothered to ask anyone...
does anyone here know the reason behind or....
have ya'll noticed ??
It doesn't kill immed. but its a slow death, I had a cat this happened to when it jumped it would never land on its feet. I didn't get it until it was in serious condtion, their is a way to counteract if you get it in time.
talking of cats, two of my cats have this continual craving for the leaves of Chinese Bamboo.dunno why!we already bought our 3rd plant after they completely 'ate up' the other two :-o wierd!

in winters the cats find them selves a warm place and thats the bonnet they get into the bonnet and sleep there its warm and safe so before starting u r care just knock at the bonnet and make sure no one is in there....once one of my friend stated his car in winter and there was a strange sound in the bonnet he turned off his car and find out the remains of the cat then he got to service his car with the blood remains of the cat..
Cats like the taste of anti freeze its sweet to them but it poisons them it throw off their gait. If your car is leaking you will want to keep wash it off the pavement. In time the cat would be killed by it.
they surely do hide under cars or any convenient corners from humans or weather conditions but don't understand the bumber rubbing part.. have u noticed any?
Marycatherine,,, u actually got an explaination but these cats aren't pets so why wud they even want to claim that "this human is mine" they r extremely cunning maybe that's why?
Maybe they are afraid of the people, and feel like its safe under the car. When we are afraid in and feel like a prisoner, we go and hide under a safe roof to not get spotted.
Same with cats, they feel threatened, and they feel safe in some places.
its individual and catividual, from person to person, from cat to cat.

Simple answer, the cat is smelling where another cat has pee'd on your car. They then rub their scent glands or pee to cover the pee smell with their own smell, thus claiming the car as their own. In western countries where alcohol is more prevalent, i've seen male humans doing a similar thing. (the pee part not the rubbing part)
Cats have scent glands along the side of their mouths that they use to mark their territory. That's why your cat rubs his face against your legs - he's letting other cats you may meet know that this human is mine.
I have noticed this too- some of them rub themselves on the exhaust pipe- probably have some nutritional deficiency like humans - PICA- fondness for unusual smells or tastes ????- like the smell of petrol.
that's coz other male cats 'mark their territory' on car bumpers parked in their 'ward' LOL so the cats are just sniffing to find out who's the new boss around :-D

i have seen mostly, cats sitting under the car during winter... think they feel it shelter to get some heat coz engine remain hot after a long run...
Snessy I assume here they sit on the top of the roof (or hood) to keep themselves cool..

What do you mean by UNDER MY HOOD :/
No idea, but in the UK cats sit on a recently parked car's bonnet to keep themselves warm. Obviously, they wouldn't have that problem here!
under my hood in the morning. very anoying!
