car crash

we all know the driving is crap in Qatar.
I have a suggestion: if someone causes an accident from sheer 100% wreckless driving then they should be banned for 6months.
then they re-take a decent test.
then they have a special l-plate on their car for 3 months so we all know they are tw$ts.
they should also have to pay for a hire car while your car is fixed and a minimal compensation for inconvenience

i was in a shunt last night-this complete tosser bashed three cars which had been stationery at the traffic lights for over a minute.
not even an apology or look of remorse. and no he wasn't qatari

also when u r waiting please still keep distance from the car in front. the car in front of me had kiddies in the back and because I had left a metre or so gap - was not too badly hit.

the upside - i didn't have one but THREE knights in shining armour.
a big thanks to richard123 for turning up I was rather shaken and needed the moral support. thanks ever so much.

The first thing my driving instructor told me before even turning the ignition on for the first time was " you are now in charge of a deadly weapon, you might as well have a loaded gun in your hand as it can do just as much damage."

That was the first lesson he imparted to me and even after 20 years driving I still remember that.

I don't go to mythical places with strange men.

i saw my first dead local guy yesterday - out on Salwa road close to the non existent Army base. Apparently the guy had not worn his seatbelt and was thrown out of the during the crash - because he was 10m. away from the still smoking wreck. As usual everyone was just looking at the crash site and taking pictures instead of trying to help....

- I took the blue pill and found myself alive in Qatar - wish I had taken the red and stayed in Europe

How many times have we all been witness to reckless drivers that have put us and others in harms way. How helpless and powerless we feel, and have muttered to ourselves.

"Irresponsible and dangerous drivers have been the root cause of countless deaths and injuries for years. Every year, people are killed on our roads in this country and a large percentage of those deaths are directly attributable to reckless drivers",

Reckless drivers have one thing in common, they all say, 'there's no cops around, I can get away this,' whether it's speeding, running a stop sign or speeding through a school zone.

The solution to this problem is really quite simple. "It's us against them and the good news is that there are far more safe drivers on the road than dangerous drivers. It's a matter of the safe drivers banning together. When you witness a reckless driver, just get their plate number, then when you get home, file a report , it's free and only takes a few minutes to file a report".

The database of traffic violations is freely accessible to everybody. It is a very easy to use, simply enter a plate number and the state from which the plate is registered. Then you will see any and all violation reports that have been filed against this particular vehicle.

Peer pressure and parental pressure may very well prove to be the key to stopping many of these drivers. Even dangerous drivers have loving friends and relatives that would be very disappointed if they were aware of their reckless driving habits. An additional incentive for these reckless drivers would in essence put them on notice that their irresponsible driving will be monitored by others that choose to drive responsibly.

With your help, parents, spouses and other love ones will have access to the violation reports by simply knowing a plate number.

it is use in my country.

just to share guys .

Ah, thanks did not know that Novita.

The (Indonesian) Karwa driver also told me they were lured out here by headhunters who promise them riches which they never receive. Then they are stuck here.

Anyone who thinks road regulations are "boring" has not lost anyone dear to them in a car crash.

Terrible news Oryx! At least you and everyone else are OK.

I have heard nightmare stories about ignoring red lights here.

One cab driver told me a friend of his from Indonesia was killed by someone doing the same thing.

The laws will have to change - the carnage must stop.

r7, driving is to get you from point A to B. It's not a matter of being boring or lame. Maybe you should try some extreme sport.

I say lock them up for a week. If it means saving lives, so be it.

I have found this interesting rather horrifying statistics today;

My route was Galleria to West Bay morning 8.45 to 9.15 am.

1. Driving and talking on ph (no hands-free) : 9 (5 of them Lankies)

2. Red signal jumping : 3

3. over speeding : above 3 and many others who tried to rush before them

4. and I heard at least 2 strong honks when my husband stopped at yellow lights. According to them, with this sheer ignorant act of my husband, they were halted in their race.

with a phone up to their ear! I try my best not to do that and use the hands free...safer but still it takes your attention away from driving.

How can you ban ppl talking on the mobile here while the authority doing the same?

I got fine for driving while talking while i sweare i never missed using a handsfree in my life. I showed my handsfree to the policeman, and he asked me if i want to pursue it further i need to go to main traffic police in Madinat Khalifa.

So sod them ... i just pay and left ... )(**&^&^%$%^#

UK Fines Rise For Driving While Talking on a cell phone.

The British government doubled the fine to £60, and three penalty points on the driver's license. The fines could rise to as much as £1000, depending on the vehicle being driven.

DWT, or Driving While Talking, has been illegal in the UK since Dec 2003.

sorry novita.

maybe you are sensible enough but a lot of people in very fast cars are too stupid to even push a shopping trolley.

I agree slap them in prison for a week. in my case the guy showed zero remorse... he should have a few days cooling off or driving ban to allow him to reflect.

they will be sent to prison because their behaviour puts lives at risk. if i came and started hitting you in the street I would be arrested and that is far far less dangerous than a speeding land cruiser hitting you and yet nothing much happens to the driver.

By r7• 4 Jul 2007 09:44

I did'nt mean it in a bad way... all i'm saying is with all these restrictions driving out here would be really boring .... Trust me I have been involved in a number of accidents which have not been my fault... Otherwise we should have like a track / area where we can drive at any speed or do whatever without endangering others....

By jauntie• 4 Jul 2007 09:38
jauntie

we have lived with these rules & regulations a long time now.

A year ago a speed camera caught me driving at about 10 mph over the limit in that area.

I was fined £60 (about QR450?) and had 3 points put on my licence! If you get more than 9 you are banned from driving.

I watch the speed limits more closely now!

Plz I think the new rules

Plz I think the new rules are way to extreme... It makes driving lame if u can't enjoy ur car at all.... Even so the driver should be sensible enough not to endanger any 1 while driving fast or whatever...

-----> wait till you know somebody who got run over by speeding driver and you can decided wether the rules are lame.

And make them drive (or be driven in) a car with a max of 1000cc engine for 12 months, and if they are caught in anything bigger - a QR50,000 fine. This lower viewpoint should give them a better perspective.

Good news for us and bad news for all those fast and furious Drivers, the authorities are considering imposing jail term to control the speeding and rash driving.

The new measures include 'Black Marks' to drivers for every violation. Once the mark exceed a certain limit (hope the limit is a realistic number) drivers License would be suspended temporarily or revoked. This is the only way I guess.. Increasing the penalty wont be a solution.

Fine for Jumping the signal increased from QR.3000 to QR.5000 and higher penalties for wrong parking.

If they implement these rules, we will see more sane drivers on the roads.

I had an accident recently and as I waited for the fun traffic police to arrive (50 mins later) I endured MEN blasting their horns for me to get in, buses with guys waving and laughing (yeah because having an accident is so funny) and every John Doe trying to pick me up. Not ONE car stopped to see if we were ok; not injured or dead, nor no witnesses. I was more shocked by this rather than the accident. Humanity people....it's really not that hard!!!

Really sorry to hear this...the number of reckless drivers are increasing day by day. They dont care about the fines...as you said the license should be banned temporary at least for 6 months...that's the best punishment they cannot live a single day without their car.

Thank god you are not hurt….. the worst part is they don't repent for what they did...they behave as if its their right to do what they want!

I just find it amzing the number of crash test babies here in Qatar. Do people value the lives of their children so little that they don't want to keep them safe in the event of a crash or is it really Allah's will if they die? I don't belive it is lack of education. Everyone must know that seatbelts save lives and kids should be strapped in an appropriate seat.

I have lived in Saudi & Oman also. Here there is flagrant disregard for the law & safety on such a massive scale that I have incredulous moments when I am driving everyday. Is anyone scared of the police, coz I'm not, they are just roadside clowns.

It's not just the locals, we all get sloppy. But, I guess under the Darwinian theory death on the roads takes the weakest, most stupid out of the gene pool.

Maybe not the most PC of thoughts, but my thoughts anyway.

I have his photo but don't know how to upload it.

I have tried copying and pasting... doesn't work.

I agree - if it is 100% wreckless driving - shame them. There is NO way this man should be driving today. Such driving is a form of violent assault and endangers lives.

It is outrageous.. there were children involved and he didn't apologise to the delightful father or anything. He really didn't deserve the courtesy and calmness he received from the other two drivers.

By ngourlay• 3 Jul 2007 09:48

It's frustrating that whenever I get a story about some crime or other, no names are mentioned. It's impossible to track a case from the initial report through to punishment, because you have no idea of the names of the drivers.

thanks everyone

I feel like i need a good spa day somewhere!

oh hamdullilah no-one esp the kiddies were hurt.

I was flaming angry - the sort of English angry that gives brits the bad reputation abroad!

When confronted (in Manchester style!)

He just waggled his head and said, ‘what is all this funny business?’

What I said was no Shakespearean English but pure Manchester vernacular so I can’t repeat it! The scary thing is – he is probably driving today – and he shouldn’t be.

I wanted to hit him badly and although i suggested taking him behind Toys R Us to teach him a lesson - the two other arab drivers - they were far too polite to join in.

I was also off to a wedding I was really looking forward to and weddings are the only opportunity I get to catch up with some of my Qatari friends. well pissed off.

I'm not that bothered about seeing the pictrure of ''el idiota''! He's not the only one anyway.

I bet he looks similar to many others who drive as if they've just smoked some illegal shisha!

You want to see a picture of 'el idiota'? Well, I took one with my cell phone last night. Unfortunately, I am too stupid to know how to download it on to QL.

As Oryx said, he didn't even have the decency and manners to apologize despite ruining everyone's evening and endangering the lives of three little kids and at least three adults.

The interesting thing to me was that the drivers of the other two cars involved were Arabs (neither were in any way to blame) and they were polite, friendly and helpful. The driver who slammed into the three cars was not an Arab. He was also not in the least bit apologetic or remorseful.

Oh Oryx, so sorry you were shaken up. Alhamdulillah everyone was not injured badly. Yes, lots of poor driving. Stiffer penalties might make people a bit more careful.

I know the feeling...just the other day, we narrowly escaped from a big crash when a guy jumped a red signal. We caught him at the next signal and he was still talking on the phone, and dint even know that he crossed the red signal.

I need to see a picture of ''el idiota'' who bashed 3 cars, so that I know his face and steer clear when he's driving?

It must be quite a hassle and a waste of time for you going to the police, having your car repaired, and staying without a car for some time!
