Not being an Engineer or urban planner, can someone please explain why the Jeddai Roundabout was dug up and put together again, yet the traffic flow is just as chaotic as before ?
An answer to the original question of why the roadworks did not improve the situation is really quite simple - because the work executed did not address the actual problems - the root causes as some would put it. The often favored approach here is just to "do something" so you can say you are addressing the problem, without a clear understanding of the real problems - the root causes.
As to traffic signals on roundabouts, they have missed the mark here because they ignored one simple principle of roundabouts - keep the roundabouts clear to keep traffic flowing. Regulate the traffic entering the roundabout - not the traffic ON the roundabout - get vehicles off the roundabout as quickly as possible.
Only 2 types of traffic signals are required - the amber light and the red light. When the amber light is flashing you may enter the roundabout with caution - meaning give way to the vehicles already on the roundabout - let them go ahead and get off. The solid amber lights means the light will turn red. The solid red light means DO NOT ENTER the roundabout. There is no need for signals ON the roundabout. Time the red lights for the proper flow to keep the roundabout clear.
On many occasions now you have a green light to enter the roundabout but cannot because it is full. Vehicles still try to enter and are now perpendicular to the flow because they just want to get on the roundabout before their signal turns red. Secondly, when the traffic stops on the roundabout the erradict and absurd lane changing begins - everyone jockeying for position.
However, For the above system to work, drivers would actually have to obey the signals - something that appears too optimistic for here.
PS - Qatar's biggest traffic problem is not 10,000 new vehicles a month - it is the complete lack of understanding of lane controls - which if they were followed would allow the traffice to flow. Left turns from the right lane - right turns from the left lanes especially on roundabouts only produces congestion and leads to accidents.
Sorry for the length of reply. Have a great day waiting in traffic!!
the roads coming from West bay towards Jaidah bridge is been broaden with 3 lanes (even R/A) while the feeding into the B Ring road towards Muntazah still with 2 lanes....so back to square...
Further drivers need to understand and follow lane discipline (Need proper "Lines mark" on the Road) where they intended to destine.....
The Roundabout under the Jeddah Flyover is Traffic Engineers Nightmare. First the two opposite sides have to be alligned through the various Piers.
If they are going to put up Traffic Signals well and good. There has been a small different to Traffic movement through this R/A. However the overall complexity of driving through this R/A still exist.
So we have to wait and see what Ashghal has planned for this intersection.
Somehow I'm not convinced UkEng... waiting doesn't seem like solution. You're an engineer for heaven's sake!! Go out there and show them how it's done right!!
no more palm trees are being planted in the medians.
the new rule for road construction, as you can see in all newly built roads, to plant only some flower beds, ground cover or blocks, even shrubs are not allowed anymore.
the plan also is to remove all palm trees from the medians soon.
as you've seen recently almost all r/a are having traffic signals, they must first provide enough storage areas for cars inside the r/a and create the slip ways for right side directions. this is the reason why.
Brit...he is still working on the drawings with the bicycle tracks.....
And can somebody tell these guys to stop putting the Palm Trees in the Street Divider under the Street lights .....the shadow they cast leaves the pedestrian completly covered ...so the car travelling at 80kmph cannot make out if there are pedestrains waiting to cross the street.
britexpat ...is Jeddai flyover in Qatar or in Jeddah?...just wondering....lol
Really its become more dangerous there than before.....it better only in a tight traffic jam when the lanes become very crowded and cars can move in 3 lanes.
The RA is most dangerous when you are entering it from the (PETRA Restaurant) B Ring Road...
The only advantage of all that digging was the entrance to the road leading to Mannai R/A (in front of sports corner) is a little bit wider and better.
actually R/As are suitable for cities that have lesser traffic....which was the case in doha several years ago.now every tom, dick and harry has a car of his own.if there are 5 members in a house, the family has at least 3 cars!can't blame them either....if they depend on one car to drop them all off at work, none of them will reach work on time.so the only solution here is to take out all the R/As (okay,at least the major traffic clogging ones) and replace them with the more impartial signals.

No rules, no road guidance...end it at chaos.
...its treasure hunting....
firstly that jeddai R/A is not round, it is oblong and it is a nightmare passing through that place.

well brit i agree it shouldn't take'em much time to place the surface course.
and moreover, why not planning to place the traffic signals simultaneously??
perhaps because only One contractor is taking over installing all traffic signals in Qatar.
then again WHY???
Clueless.
Yalla!
You should be a senior manager , not an Engineer.. :O)

they just woke up one day and felt like digging it up and putting it back again.. :P
So is this the reason that part of the road has not been resurfaced (leaving jagged edges) allowing motorists to ruin the tyres on their KIAs ?
phoenix2009...you are correct....if it is signalized then its ok.
the said R/A has slip roads on 2 sides except on the side of the Jaidah Showroom...
yeah and i think we really need this slip road, they should remove the showroom, i think it's enough that the flyover is named after it ;)
Yalla!
and btw jackmohan,

Where is that UkEngQatar... he's probably to blame for most of the chaos ....

that jeddai R/A should be removed as all R/A in main roads, just imagine the space big R/As eat up when you can add another 1 or 2 lanes.
10,000????good heavens!at this rate,i guess i'll be walking to work in a few years from now....maybe i'll reach earlier than now :-/

just read in the paper... that there are 10,000 new cars every month on the road...no wonder the roads are getting less crowded every day..lol
I guess, you are missing the main point : you are in QATAR, my friend! IN QATAR... still need further explanations?

poor urban planning?
i guess they just tried to widen the roads under the flyover....though it wasn't of much help,IMHO....good morning, brit :-)
