The Gulf states are well aware of the 'Solar Energy' only because it is still to expensive (they think) and until it was not necessary to use it. In Europe many households are using solar energy and many new buildings are being built with it.

If a solar car means 50 m.p.h. this is enough anyway for European roads which are already vastly overcrowded and it would be a great thought for Qatar it would reduce the death rate of young boys here I would think.

However, as long as there is gas and oil to be sold, where the West is earning a great amount of tax profit on both, and consumers are willing to pay the price, why bother to even try to change.

Governments are not particularly interested in the climate change nor the damage dome by smoke or gas to the inhabitants the main thing is how many green bucks selling it will bring

2masti, they are starting speaking about environment and renewables in Qatar too and for one reason: it's trendy!

I guess you are talking about oil!!!

More population = more car, more industry, more electricity all of which need huge amount of Oil/gas (not to mention domestic consumption for cooking which is only a fraction & can be easily replaced by biogas).

So if anything is going to happen to the price of Oil its only going to be more expensive.

Middle east is blessed with potential Solar & Wind energy, and the money needed to develop it. Compared to which US/UK/Russia/Europe do not get as much sun-days in the year, so obviously they are hesitating to use these technology.

Yet there was news that in Vatican they are using Solar roof on some building (or was it hall?).

UAE is leading the charge in Solar Energy in the Middle east.

http://uaeinteract.com/docs/Dubai_to_harness_sun_and_wind_to_meet_power_needs/24609.htm

(dont miss the bit where UAE is going to suffer power shortages by 2012).

And the Solar Car @50KmPH

Car manufacturers around the world will not be exactly pleased to remodel their billion dollar manufacturing plants to build such cars.

But if it can happen it can happen only in the Middle-East!!!

the world is changing and the balance of powers is too! You are right if you say that the west pays high prices for crude oil and wealth here is growing! That's actually what they intend. The west sees rising economies that are far beyond their own and will dominate world's trade for decades in the future! So the west is thriving for marketshare when it comes to sell high-end or luxury products, to conquer and secure the market. They accepty the prices, because by the money paid, the increase the ability to pay their prices and thereby push demand for their products.

NEvertheless, the world is changing and we as westerners have to rethink where we are and may be we have to accept that we are not the world's leading economies and societies. I think that carries a chance for an even more balanced world order, but only if everyone acts with respect to the others and is not searching for his own advantage. This is my greatest concern when looking at the developments here in the gulf!

We can land on the moon, but not cure the common cold.

We can sit out in space for months on end, but we can't wait 5 minutes in a queue without getting frustrated.

We want God to show us everything about Himself, but we can't catch a handful of wind, or hold nothing but a flame in our hand.

Basically we're not as clever as we think we are!

"The heart is most deceitful above all things, who can cure it?"
