Boy dies after being left in car

Sadly it's the time of year for this type of news again. :(

Boy, 3, dies after being left in sweltering car for hours in RAK

ABU DHABI // A three-year-old boy died after being left in the family car for three hours in 43°C heat.

The Yemeni family had returned to their home in Ras Al Khaimah at 2pm on Friday, after an outing. The little boy was found unconscious in the car three hours later and rushed to Al Dhaid Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Authorities said the cause of death was lack of oxygen.

“Unattended children suffocating inside a car is clear evidence of family negligence and poor judgement of the potential dangers involved,” said Maj Gen Nasser Lakhraibani Al Nuaimi, secretary general of the Ministry of Interior and head of the higher committee for child protection.

He expressed his “deep sorrow” over the incident, and said parents should be cautious about the whereabouts of their children, especially during summer when the heat can be dangerous.

Two Emirati children, a five-year-old girl and a two-year-old Emirati boy, died in separate incidents last July after their families left them in vehicles.

In May 2009, a four-year-old girl died in Abu Dhabi after she was forgotten on a school bus. A similar incident in the capital in 2008 ended with the death of a three-year-old boy.

If a vehicle is parked in direct sunlight, a trapped child can develop life-threatening symptoms within 10 to 20 minutes, said Dr Fakhri Azzam, a specialist paediatrician at the Medcare Medical Centre at Jumeirah Beach Residence in Dubai.

“Because there is lack of ventilation in a closed car, the temperature inside and the temperature of the child can rise very sharply, especially if they are exposed to direct sunlight,” he said.

The heat may affect the respiratory control centre in the brain, causing breathing difficulties or a complete stop of breathing activity.

Dr Azzam advised parents to take the issue seriously.

“Never leave children alone and always count numbers in your party as you leave your car - make sure you have everyone before you lock it,” he said.

DeadMan.

That is so dumb of parents and unfortunate incident.

I remember, last year I left an air refresher on the passenger seat of my vehicle and parked the vehicle in the sun.

After almost two hours i came back and discovered that my car was filled with perfume, dashboard coated with whitish powder and rear seat had hole through it. The whole frigging container had pierced the hell of out of the back seat.

It made me realize, how high the temperatures can get in a car...

BTW...should they not at least be charged with manslaughter ? As it can't be proven they left the kid there to die.

Sulie, I guess some people take the easy way to regret it later.

I am pretty certain they did not forget him. He was sleeping, they did not want to wake him, so they left him.

I don't understand how you can forget your child in the back seat. Even when he isn't in the car I automatically look back at my son's car seat before I get out of the car. And how do you not notice that your 3 year old is missing for 3 hours? Toddlers are noisy!

A truly tragic incident, and very painful to even ponder upon. How many more kids will would have to perish in this manner before people seriously started taking precautions and being extra vigilant? I can imagine the parents must feel awful now, lamenting their loss.. A loss that their own hands have earned sadly due to their negligence!

very sad, but unfortunately many parents don't think anything will happen when they leave them. Sometimes being ignorant brings pain

Terrible to see this. I remember a couple of years ago there was a similar incident though not here in qatar. A parent left his vehicle on with a 3 yr old in the car sleeping. While he came back he understands that the car is locked inside and his key is left there. It was a terrible time for the parent to knock the car and get the child up from sleep. The child when he woke up was scared seeing the number of people peeping into the car to try saving him. It was embarrassing one hour after which the child unlocked the door some how. Its best that the children are not left unattended in a car.

MM...I guess negligence is ok but poor judegement...judegement that the kid would be ok in a closed car under the sun in summers in this part of the world. The same parents would immediately switch on the car ac as soon as they get in. I don't think that can be called judgement as no one in his right mind would ever think of that to be alright IMO. Just negligence should suffice.

I think it's pretty poor judgement to leave a sleeping toddler in a locked car in 43 degree heat HGL. Not sure what else you would call it?

It does happen everywhere Brit, but given the extreme temperatures here it can happen even faster. No reason not to post this as a warning. :(

"Unattended children suffocating inside a car is clear evidence of family negligence and poor judgement of the potential dangers involved"...Poor Judgement??? Can't quite get that!

Tragic. May he rest in peace. There have been similar incidents all over the world where parents have "forgotten" about kids being in cars.
