WATER WARNING: Officials have taken steps to have production stopped at the Jibal Faifa Water Factory. (Photo for illustrative purposes only)High levels of bromate have been found in bottled drinking water from the Jibal Faifa Water Factory in Saudi Arabia’s Sabya Governorate, local media reports on Monday.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has issued a warning after high levels of the chemical, suspected of causing cancer in humans, was discovered, the Saudi Gazette reports.

The factory is owned by Jazan Development Company (Jazadco) in Jazan region.

The SFDA inspects all bottled drinking water factories to monitor levels of bromate, which occurs when drinking water is treated.

Officials have written to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to stop the production of the bottled drinking water and remove it from the shelves, the paper reports.

Let's just say I am a little bit paranoid about hygiene standards, especially where my kids are concerned.

Bottled water may be good at the source factory, but a lot depends on have they store and transport it, specially during the hot summer months. Not too happy with the casing.

no need to boil or filter out tap water, as i said it is monitored by kahrama thrice a day as far as purity concerns...

Nah Soniya..... think bottled and tap water almost the same, but I just thought of all the choices I have, I'll pick the "healthier" option. Besides my little one was a little too happy playing with the hot water knob of the dispenser. That's why got rid of it.

I had issues with bottled water....the ones that we invert into a dispenser. Have small kids at home and didn't want to take another risk.

Really guys, if you notice sometimes the "healthy" bottled water does taste funny. Had it replaced twice.

tap water is thoroughly being checked three times a day according to my discussion with kahrama official... which is of purity no doubt...

i see the families around drinking tap water and they are healtheir like those drink bottled water.... :)

You guys are making me scare about the articles on BOTTLED WATER that's been on circulation on QL for last 1 month...So what's the solution now finally?? Should we start drinking TAP WATER now(Of course with RO installed)??

By jake15• 2 Aug 2010 15:47

aw... so meaning to say RO is not an option..

By anonymous• 2 Aug 2010 15:46

hapy nowadays with the availability of activated carbon RP filters, most of the limitations of RO system have been overcome.

By hapy• 2 Aug 2010 15:43

RO filters have their own problems they reduce the mineral content of water to too low a degree, which makes it more corrosive. RO water needs to be re-mineralized. I wonder why the government allowed RO at home, shud be banned.

Had it installed a few months back, costs about 2000/- Basically it passes the tap water through a series of filters, an additional outlet is provided so you can drink it straight of the tap

rEzyz - your right... because most of the bottled water (gallons) are used before... its clearly show the bottle itself.. sometimes its licking because of over used...

Jibal Faifa brand is Saudi... but i m sure appropriate procedures and safety precautions are not being taken at the time of refilling bottles... which we can assume in nowadays discussion...

moreover should be ban upon the re-use of bottles being used constantly...

I have always been concerned by the use of Non-biodegradable plastic. I wish they ban bottled water altogether which ofcourse is never going to happen. Install water purifiers at home.

What's the brand name of that water? Is it available here in Qatar too?
