Roma (people), commonly known as Gypsies, a traditionally nomadic people found throughout the world. While the term gypsy is often attached to anyone leading a nomadic life, the Roma share a common biological, cultural, and linguistic heritage that sets them apart as a genuine ethnic group.
When they first arrived in Europe over 500 years ago, the Roma were called Gypsies in the mistaken belief that they had come from Egypt. The true origins of the Roma remained a mystery until the late 18th century, when European linguists discovered connections between the Romani language and certain dialects spoken in northwestern India. More recent linguistic and historical studies have confirmed that the Roma originated in India.
The world population of Roma is difficult to establish with any certainty. Estimates suggest that there are between approximately 15 and 30 million Roma worldwide. Some 10 million Roma live in Europe, and they make up that continent’s largest minority population. The largest concentrations of Roma are found in the Balkan peninsula of southeastern Europe, in central Europe, and in Russia and the other successor republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Smaller numbers are scattered throughout western Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Americas.
The Roma are divided into groups sometimes referred to as nations or tribes. These divisions generally reflect historical patterns of settlement in different geographic areas. The European tribes include the Calé of Spain, Finland, and Wales; the Sinti of Germany and central Europe; the Manouche of France; the Romanichals of the United Kingdom; the Boyash of Romania; and the Roma, a subgroup of the larger Roma population, of Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Although historically renowned as wanderers, the vast majority of modern Roma live in settled communities.
Because the Roma are widely dispersed, their culture and social organization vary considerably. An important characteristic everywhere, however, is a strong sense of group identity. Romani culture stresses the sacredness of its own traditions in opposition to those of the outside world. Contact with non-Roma is regarded as potentially polluting, a belief probably derived from the religious beliefs of the Roma’s Hindu ancestors. Another unifying force is their language, Romani, which consists of a number of dialects belonging to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages. Most Roma speak some form of Romani. Others speak dialects of local languages with extensive borrowings from Romani. Romani is primarily a spoken rather than written language. Until recent years most Roma were illiterate, and illiteracy rates remain high in most Roma communities.
Roma usually adopt the religious faith of the countries in which they live. Some Roma are Roman Catholic, while others embrace the Eastern Orthodox, Protestant, or Islamic faiths. Generally the Roma prefer to carry out religious rituals in their own homes or as part of folk observances.
whether or not you wanted to sound like an ignorant racist twit is not relavent...what IS relevant is that you DID come across that way. It would be like asking..Brits..how do you deal with these kinds of people????
Have you thought that perhaps it was the way YOU approached them that caused the problem?
The Bedouins I've met are very nice and go out of their way to help you when you need help, just like any other person. They are a proud people and everyone need to be respectful of that. Treat them as you'd like to be treated..its very simple.
If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the main difference between a dog and man.
If you are in the desert deal with them with the utmost respect. The desert is their domain. They know more about it that any city slicker ever could. If you are in trouble they will help you. They are kind and generous with what little they have to offer, and what they have to offer is generally what you need!
Try to reread my comments, "from the South" which means I am not degrading the whole nations, and am not degrading the people from my place too, but trust me, we have no Laws if there is such,..."mostly" dont follows it. Did I make myself clear now? :)
...u need to have a spare of patience, earplugs are needed when lost in conversation..i was in that situation once, but i didn't packed all that gadgets,:D
what ive posted is not that kind of racist, immature, pretty dumb!so tell me what is wrong with it?a thoughts of every person who will comments on this is the one.so why it should be alexa?
deal with them like how you want them to deal with you...and, if they're being rude with you, just take a deep breath and tell yourself 10x "I am not badou!"...
May b u should learn to deal wid ur self first, and become mature, then u'll learn how to deal wid different kind of people...! Qataris are not boudus, u r...who r working for us!
boy!i dont mean something about this thread, all i want is changing of thoughts, this is your country so we need to respect your elder in many ways, depends upon their treatment...
other nationality is easy,i only have difficulties with this bedouins, some others are rude and some others are uneducated..no offense people, just only observation..
They call themselve as Qataris but Govt. has not yet provided them with the Citizenship or Passport...
They have a travel document thru which they can travel to other Countries...
Mostly bedouins are from Iran, Yemen, Libya, Saudia Arabia etc.. like Bani Kahlid is a Bedu Tribe in Qatar,,
A large number of popluation in Qatar are from Bedu tribes... if you travel in the outskirts of Qatar in the desert specailly towards Dukhan (the Oil rich Land) you will find Bedus still living there.... they like to live in desert rather than in the City.
Despite the stereotype. But out of all qataris, Bedouins are the nicest you'd encounter. They are simple people. 90% of the older generation might be illiterate. You must off-course differentiate between Bedouin & Bedouin clans whom inhabited the outskirts of doha for the past 3 decades (what is now the villagio area) . The clans have integrated with the locals, some are very highly educated & hold strong position in the government not to mention high ranks in the military. Because of their loyalty, Bedouins have gained the trust of all ruling families in the gulf & jordan (Not to mention Israel, Bedouins are the only arabs allowed in the IDF). Although, they may pass as savages. I think they are the bravest among all other locals when it come to demanding their right from the government.Thats why you might encounter them more than other qataris at customer services in each government service (like Hamad hospital for instance)
how to deal with them maybe.well angel16 bedouins is easy to communicate with them, all you have to do is losse your patient, especially a lot of bedouins is not educated.
