Be very very careful with used cars

I went to the Qatar Technical Inspection Company for the annual car inspection. You have to do this in order to renew your insurance. The car passed all of the mechanical and safety requrements but failed on the legal requirements.

The legal requirements state that there should be no damage to the paintwork at all (including minor dents and scartches). If you have any damage, no matter how minor, your car will fail. If it fails, you have to have the repairs made and the car re-inspected.

In order to pass, my car will need a respray and the cost of this is about the same as the value of the car so I am trashing the car and buying a new one.

You must be very careful when buying a used car that it is completely unblemished or it will fail the inspection and you won't be able to insure it. Also. remember that you cannot get anything other than third party insurance for cars more than three years old.

In future, its new cars only for me.

I am about to buy a new car. Which insurance do you recommend as I am fairly new around here.

Thanks

If my memory serves me correctly, the car has to be in the same condition (including colour) when it's tested as it was when purchased. This apparently includes attachments such as fog lights.

A tad stupid really

Mo_C,

Why did they ask you to remove the fog lights? I was just about to have them installed in my car!!

Testing centres outside of Industrial area are a little bit liberal in many things. Only thing you need to pay QR50 extra I think thats all.

I bought a second hand Jeep Cherokee. Did the test on my car in Wakra. The police officer asked me to remove the window tint that the previous owner had put on, as well as the fog lights. He waived the couple of scratches, peeling paintwork, and baby on board sticker. The Wakra testing station is much less busy and just as far as the industrial area. Police officer has an office at the testing station and is quite a reasonable fellow.

Hello everyone, I am in the process of evaluating an offer to work in Doha. I reside in Dubai, however I am unemployed and looking for a job, my best option so far is Doha. I am married, without kids.

I have a car, a Ford Escape 2005. I am planning to ship it to Doha. I have read a few posts related to shipping a car, but this one about failing tests because of body paint conditions is interesting. Since I am on a tight budget, facing situations like the one described in the original post, after shipping a car to Doha, would be a major negative set back to my shattered finances.

A dent, a scratch, anything similar may happen during the shipping. What would be your advice on this scenario?, I would like to gauge the situation based on your comments.

Thank you in advance and best regards.

They will aslo fail your car saying that your fire extinguisher is expired. And how do they know its expired, its straight forward. They just remove the lock on the extinguisher, and press it. Thats it. I dont know how they learnt that was the way to test the expiry of the extinguisher. And this is a technical requirement not even a legal requirement.

SO the next time if you go with the same expired fire extinguisher hey presto its all fine.

There are so many run down cars in Doha. You can take it as a safe bet that they are not insured. I guess they think the chances of being stopped are small. I don't think I have ever seen the police pull anyone over in the year that I have been here.

and you see this half run down car roaming around Doha street???

scratches are listed as Major Faults not minor. Its ridiculous because they have absolutely no impact on the safety or roadworthiness of the car.

Although the technical inspection company may mention Failed in Legal; if you were to proceed to the traffic police for the legal clearance they ignore all the minor things and let you pass.

is still a reason for rejection but they have stopped spraying an X on the offending panels.

I have known cars rejected in the past because they were dirty!

Do they still spray a huge black X on the offending panels?
